How to Do It with Stoya and Rich

89

For three years, Stoya and Rich Juzwiak have been giving advice to Slate readers on all things sex—mismatched libidos, secret desires, (bad) sexting, surprising fetishes, and assorted other wild things. Now they're joining forces to answer their most jaw-dropping questions yet, sometimes with the help of special guests. Whatever you want to know about sex—truly, whatever—they'll tell you how to do it.

    Boring… probably not for me
It pains me to say it, as I generally find something to enjoy in all of the different Slate podcasts, but this podcast bores me to tears. The mere fact that you’re polyamorous (as one of the host seems to be) does not necessarily mean you have anything interesting to say about sex and relationships; quite the contrary: this podcast seems to show the opposite to be true. The views aired in the few episodes I’ve listened are pedestrian and parochial, and lacking in nuance. It’s possible that I’ve caught episodes that were not great examples of the show, or that this podcast simply isn’t for me.

Great, unless you have a single boundary
Decide you don’t want your husband to use pornography next to you in bed or have private interaction with sex workers outside your marriage (two totally reasonable boundaries that came up on this week’s pod)? You must be a Puritan, and are definitely part of the problem! Hey, everybody has their own lines where sex is concerned. The hosts say so over and over. Just know if your lines don’t particularly align with their own, that inclusivity might dissolve into harsh judgement in a hurry. Queer sex workers in open relationships seem to be the only people deserving support. I feel bad for the people who write in looking for reasonable advice.

Biased towards extremely liberal sexual values
Hosts can come off as dismissive and judgmental of certain advice seekers whose views and sexual attitudes don’t align with their own. Understandable, I guess, but probably just not for me… so much of the “advice” just doesn’t seem practical for someone who doesn’t have the experience of career sex professionals.

    1.5 speed
Good show but consider covering 3 questions instead of 2. Too much repetition of points etc makes it seem you are stretching it out to fill time. I listen at 1.5 speed, which works.

    Refreshing and informative
The hosts are mature, sex-positive, and funny. There’s no shaming of any kind, which makes it an easy, guilt-free listen. The hosts also have good chemistry and ask each other good questions. Lighthearted, yet informative.

    Authentic & fun
Love hearing the thoughtful and nuanced perspectives from rich & stoya. I appreciate the great advice, and that the questions are real, messy, and not always cute.

    Great show, but too short
So far I really like this podcast. It is interesting, funny, and they are good about looking at all sides. My only complaint is that the episodes are pretty short and I would really love to see some episodes that are a bit longer.
