The Prince Mixtape

Music #12

On each episode of The Prince Mixtape, we’ll meet people who knew Prince, worked with him, or simply loved him from afar. Host Nichole Perkins will dig deep into key moments of his life, like when his sexually liberated lyrics gave birth to the Parental Advisory Sticker, when he fought to own his masters, and when he rocked that infamous, delicious booty cut-out pantsuit. The first season of this series explored the unforgettable life of Princess Diana. On season two, just like a treasured mixtape from your favorite crush, the series is a reflection of all the care and passion, the big moments and small, that made up a life. Prince's life.

CNN style identity politics and culture war
The host seems to lay thick layers of the identity politics and CNN style culture war editorializing a couple of times each episode. It seems disingenuous seeing as how CNN, MSNBC, NPR, FOX, NEWSMAX et al are all pro genocide and consent manufacturers of Middle East warmongering. There is no difference between any of them except their variety of engineered domestic polarization.

    More please?!
This is an excellent podcast on our beloved Prince. The narrator is devoted. Great content with a funky background that really left me wanting more episodes! I have listened to them all, twice!

    Personal, Worldly, Honest, Clear, Loving
This podcast is a great example of how to hold love for a person while seeing all their faults. Not forgiving their mistakes, and loving them, still. The interviews with people who worked with Prince are PRICELESS. A lesson in journalism. Good work. I’m a Prince fam, too. My grief for the loss of him is alike unto yours. I know there are many we share this loss with. Our hearts are joined, still standing in the purple rain, laughing. And yes, I do know what Purple Rain is. Drink it up.

    Missing parts
I love all things Prince… i would have liked to hear more about his marriage to Mayte and the birth/death of their child. I know this affected him deeply and should have been included in his story.

    Eh
Its great to learn about Prince from the people who were close to him. But the host creeks me out with how obsessed she is with him and sees him pretty much as a God. Also the tones of woke takes away from the potential this series could be…. Disappointed.

    Not bad, not great
I really loved hearing about Prince, but the author makes it more about their self. I.e. complaining of her worries of being objectified but then proceeding to objectify prince endlessly thereafter.

A wonderful personal experience for prince fans
Looooove Nichole Perkins in everything she does, and as a Prince fan this is exactly the combination I didn’t know I NEEDED. The personal aspect of her story of discovering and loving prince adds something special. Thank you for this!

The love I have for him is never ending. Thank you so much for sharing your love of Prince in this beautiful, informative, love letter. I was lost in this podcast in the best way possible. 💜💜💜

    Technical problems
I enjoy the podcast but every time the podcast gets interrupted it goes back to the beginning and I have to figure out where I was before.

I found this podcast by accident and even though I had listened to a couple other podcasts about Prince , I have to admit this one is really my favorite. It may not have the most formal information but it’s definitely the most interesting. I am really drawn to the host’s style of narration and her personal perspective. I really enjoy the background stories and the guests who share their experiences and stories of working with Prince. I look forward to the next season .

    Very personal
The content is informative and the guests who worked with Prince sharing stories is the best part of this new podcast. My only issue is the host, who is good but their are several personal stories that are long. It is as if the podcast is a personal love letter and not something that other fans can truly enjoy.

I love this Podcast about Prince. In one of Prince’s last albums he is addressed as Mr. Nelson. I was 14 when I first heard International Lover and the rest is history. My cool parents let me and my friends to go his 1999 Concert in Baltimore MD. I was devastated when Prince died. My cool parents called me at worked to give me the news and to make sure I was ok. The only therapy that brought me peace was to visit Paisley Park with my same BFF that went to the 1999 Concert 40 years ago. Can’t wait to listen to the rest of your podcast.

    Offensive
Brazen comments about “White Mothering”. White mothers dressing alike? Who cares? Not an inclusive podcast. All Caucasian women are alike? Wow.
  • bellebleu
    Hypocrite
Yet another hypocritical entitled problematic black woman who cries “white supremacy, land owners, problematic white woman” and still makes a bank on a pod about a white woman. Everyone sticks to their morals until it comes to money, success and fame. And you’re no different. Could’ve been a great pod had it been hosted by someone who cares more about the person rather than the color of her skin.

    Great listen!
Aminatou does it again! I love her fresh perspective on Diana and the guests are second to none. Excellent scriptwriting and fun binge listen.

    Wonderful!!
Thank you so much for making this show. Princess Diana is such an amazing figure and icon and this show is presented beautifully! Hoping for more episodes in the future?? But also, so grateful to have gotten to listen and learn.
  • afb313
    Thematically Confusing
While I appreciate the host’s ability to engage in thoughtful conversations with the guest, the show is thematically confusing. The focus consistently veers toward being a minority in the UK, which should be a separate episode. Rather, it’d be more helpful to learn more about Diana as a mother and the legacy her children have created because of her mothering skills. Also, I would’ve enjoyed learning about Diana’s own complicated relationship with her mother and how that played into her own role as a mother.
  • philthyglass
    She deserved so much better.
It truly breaks my heart that you people can’t just leave her alone !! Rest In Peace, Lady Diana. I’m the only person that cares about you everyone else sold you up the river!!
  • Sonnetdg
    Love this Fresh Perspective
It can be daunting to take a subject that has saturated popular culture for the past three decades like Princess Diana has, but this series takes an exciting and new approach. The host, guests, and themes are smart, and engaging, and provocative. Def recommend for non-royalists (and royalist s) invested in exploring the humanity behind celebrity and so much more. It’s also refreshing to have millennials at the helm. 💜💜💜

    Firmly “anti-monarchy” myself but
I realize and respect that others feel very differently and so can find the topic fascinating - especially with a smart, delightful, insightful host. This is very well done!

Through the the Lenses of Real Peoples Experiences
Stumbling on this podcast I continued to listen since I too had grown up with Diana. I was in my mid twenties when she passed. I am Dutch, grew up in the Netherlands. My family moved when I was seven to America. Non of my friends in the US understood the love or loyalty you have toward the royal family. Especially a young girl growing up with Princess Diana. It is a way of life just like in the US children learn about the President. I heard a beautifully weaved story into a tapestry of so many facets of living as a children listening to their Mother’s talk about Princess Diana in a diverse culture while still focusing on Princess Diana’s human qualities of being a Royal. Weaving in of Princess Diana coming to NY City. The Daughter telling the impactful story of her mother being the teacher getting the poster board the last minute. Weaving though the podcast back and forth the mother talking like Diana was part of the family. Also weaving the diversity that every culture has but I did not hear any negativity in that. I felt like I was there with you as the 5 yr old. The power of stories. Thank you.
  • AnnProsser
    My favorite royal podcast 👑
Sometimes it’s fun to just talk about the royals in general as other podcasts do, but I really appreciate the deep (and even analytical) dives this podcast does. Can’t wait for more episodes!
  • KAMM4444
    Veering off topic
The subject of the first episode offered a chance to really explore new ground (which is unusual for any Diana story) however the focus seemed to be more about the story of being a minority in the UK (which I would have enjoyed a separate episode of its own for sure). I felt it diluted this episode which was meant to be on motherhood. Diana’s own relationship with her mother/grandmother etc would have been rich pickings but not touched on.

    Love this!!
After two episodes, I already love this podcast! Aminatou Sow always asks such thoughtful questions of her interviewees and challenges listeners to think differently. I also love that this pod is reviewing historical events/people and what it says about our culture. Can’t wait for more!
  • KrissyR86
    Great Podcast
    Loving it so far!
  • Evan Hansen Devotee
    Disappointing
As a big Diana fan, I was expecting new information and insights. This is a retread from someone who doesn’t seem to understand that, if you’re at all a Diana fan and haven’t been in a submarine for 40 years, you know all this. All too well. I find it incredible that the podcaster’s tone seems to be one of a news breaker. Maybe there’s time for the podcaster to readjust both her focus and her attitude. Don’t go over all the old news and, if you do, acknowledge that this is just a fun, personal and gossipy take.

    A critical re-thinking of Diana's legacy
I am absolutely here for it.

    So unique!
Most know what happened to Princess Diana and how the Royal family treated her, but this is an interesting way to tell her story and show how influential she was! Can’t wait to hear more 🤗

    Sounds great
Only heard the trailer so far, but now I can’t wait for the rest of the series to come out! Sounds like a very fun take on this historical figure, with new perspectives on the Princess’ legacy.
