Echoes of History

116

Dive into the real-life history that inspires the locations, characters, and storylines of the legendary world of Assassin’s Creed.

‘Echoes of History’, a Ubisoft podcast brought to you by History Hit, is the place where listeners can explore the narrow side streets of Medici-ruled Florence, cross sand dunes in the shadow of ancient pyramids, climb the rigging of 18th century brigs sailing across the Caribbean and meet the most powerful warlords in Feudal Japan, all before stepping ‘into the Animus’ to understand how and why these moments are recreated in the acclaimed historical game series.

Every week, join historian Matt Lewis, and regular contributor Holly Nielsen, as they speak to historical experts about the secrets of the past and uncover how these stories influence Assassin’s Creed.

    It’s Cavalry not Calvary
Please learn the difference. I’m begging you.

    Ads on ads
I enjoy AC and don’t mind listening to a show advertising the series. That said, it’s pretty bold for an ad to have ad breaks.

    Really dig this podcast!
I'm a fan of the Assassin's Creed series of video games and I also enjoy learning about historical events. Love the presentation of the podcast. It would be cool if they talked about the games more but I guess historical scholars don't have much time for an Assassin's Creed game.

    Biased and inaccurate
This is NOT history. The bias is clear.

    History
This is a wonderful podcast trying to give you the history behind the games. They give a good effort getting historians in to help explain major plot points. Really enjoy this latest season on Japan.

Why is a Hollywood Actor with an LA Accent Covering 17th Century Pirates?
Okay there are good and bad seasons of this podcast. But the latest, to promote the upcoming Skull and Bones game, is rough. Historically, Paradiso/Ubisoft employ a history expert to help provide some credibility to the narrative. In this season, we have Michelle Rodriguez. She is a mediocre actor at best and her attempts to create drama or speak about cultures and cities is embarrassing. Rodriguez has her place as an actor; a history podcast is not one of them.

    An Excellent Podcast!
I grew up playing Assassins Creed but never took the time to appreciate the real world historical influence found within each game. Now that I am older and find history more interesting I am happy to have stumbled across this podcast. Ali and the others do an excellent job of narrating and I look forward to their future content!

    Informational and engaging
As someone who has no previous knowledge about the game series, it was extremely informative to learn its deep and engaging exploration of historical events. My brother loves this game and he helped me draw connections between the podcast and our learning’s in class such as the main villain Qabiha was a non caliph who had substantial influence over the caliphate. The episodes are rich in detail, providing fresh perspective on Islamic history. It’s a must hear for everybody!

    Informative and culturally apt.
As a long time fan of the assassin creed series I can confidently speak for the fanbase when I say the cultural accuracy to the era and setting is almost as - if not as important as the gameplay. It essentially gives the background of the narrative. Especially in this case - we get to see Basim’s story after his actions in Valhalla. Professor Olomi’s work in construction the cultural background and the accuracy in doing so is phenomenal. I have a good understanding of ancient Arabia but I feel I stand to learn a lot more and what better way to do so than to play an assassin’s creed game. I do feel hiring him as the historian was amazing choice by Ubisoft!

    Engaging and concise!
Olomi and Hassanein’s storytelling is engaging and compelling, telling history from new perspectives and giving a deep dive into Islamic culture. I listened to Episode 3, “The Harem,” and it completely challenged my preconceived notion of what a harem was and offered me unique explanations of how things were and why they came to be. The conciseness of the podcast captured my interest and kept me engaged for the whole segment – something not always guaranteed on history podcasts. I will definitely continue to hear the rest of the season!

    Fascinating and Educational
This podcast is such an easy listen and super informational. I listened to Season 5 which focuses on the Islamic civilization and I found it to be really engaging. I think this podcast is a really cool way to learn about history.

    Engaging and interesting!
I personally loved this podcast, the one I listened to was really great as it talked about how society currently views the Middle East, and then goes into what the middle east actually was. This was really interesting to hear because so many people are not as educated as they may think they are on this fascinating history, and hopefully take a step back to hear the true stories of the Middle East in this podcast.

    Review
I like how the implementation of history makes the game that much more real. People like to play games that have historical aspects embedded within the gameplay. It also spreads the rich history of Islam and the Middle East.

    Great Historical Insight!
Love the series - great insight and combination of historian commentary along with AC characters. Hope they keep it up!

    Good, but could be better
I love learning about this stuff but in some of the episodes it's incredibly difficult to understand what the people are saying. Trying to listen to episode 3 and had to stop because the lady's accent is really rough and she slurs her words together way too often. I can barely tell what she is saying half the time. The episode before that, the guys English was also very rough. Why are you having these people speak?

    Crusades don’t forgive sins
I wasn’t necessarily expecting a fair treatment of Catholicism so I thought three stars is a good start. To have your sins forgiven you actually have to confess them to a priest— that is sins that kill the life of the soul. The pope was given an indulgence. So to have the restitution due to sin forgiven you have to do penance. The pope made this mission a full indulgence. Even after the crusade, then You have to be perfectly sorry for your sins to avoid purgatory and gain the full indulgence.

Love the stories and the narrator
I followed the “history guy” on YouTube and he mentioned this podcast series so I started with the very first episode and bing-listened to them all. It is very interesting and complex. If you’re interested in the history of western culture, this is a must. It fits in nicely with the movies and stories coming out of the history of England recently. I’d like to hear more!!! We’ll produced and, of course narrated 😎
