The Video Archives Podcast with Quentin Tarantino & Roger Avary

TV & Film #91

Quentin Tarantino & Roger Avary invite you to become a customer at Video Archives, the video store where it all began. Joined by their trusty producer Gala Avary, they’ll travel back in time to revisit old classics and discover new favorites, pulled from the thousands of actual VHS tapes that Quentin & Roger used to recommend to customers back in the day at the original Video Archives store in Manhattan Beach. From controversial James Bond films to surprising exploitation flicks, the Video Archives team will expose you to movies you didn't know you'd love, give awards to their favorites, and of course, rate the quality of the video transfer.

    My favorite podcast!
Really into this although I’m way behind because I like to track down the films they are talking about before I listen so I can better understand what they’re talking about.

    Love is…this podcast
More edits: Is Quentin and his family safe? His wife’s family? I am so sorry Israel and its citizens gave been so brutally attacked. Edited to add: I would love for Quentin, Roger and Gala to do an extra sumpin’ sumpin’ Golden Globe discussion as well as The Oscars. I am recommending this podcast to anyone and everyone. Great conversation. Wonderful stories that add layers to the films. The give and take of delightful and insightful information just makes these movies so much more. Terrific teamwork between Quentin, Gala and Roger — impressive and fun. Loved Quentin’s interview for 3 Books (bought one of Pauline Kael’s books at Quentin’s recommend) and purchased Cinema Speculation today. My only complaint is, I hate waiting for new episodes!

Probably the youngest viewer, however this podcast is approachable for all ages
+ my favorite podcast! I need season 2 asap !!! Even if it’s Rodger and Gala

My favorite podcast. I love the insight and deep dives into some forgotten gems. Thank you Roger , Quentin and Gala! Please keep it up!

    Off the rails
This is such a great podcast. One of the best parts about it (so far) is that Quentin and Roger barely talk about their own films. It’s a conversation between three cinephiles about other people’s movies. I get the desire to mix it up and do this Rick Dalton thing but man…kinda ruins the show with this self-absorbed meta material. We come to hear passionate discussion about obscure (often times awful) movies. We come for apples…not oranges. Sorry to be a whiney brat.

I love listening to people who are passionate about Different subjects this is by far my favorite podcast

    Roger…..shhhh
Excellent show. Quentin’s knowledge of Hollywood history is unmatched. Roger and Gala are fun, but Roger needs to stop interrupting.

    Great show. Great insights
Although I find Tarantino to be one of the most overrated directors of all time, I find him to be a great

    Genuineness!
This has rapidly risen through the ranks to become my favorite podcast. Quentin, Roger and Ala all bring something different to the table… and it’s refreshing that they don’t always agree. It feels honest and genuine and I love it.

    Be Kind - Rewind
C'mon, now. It's Quentin in his element. I don't even mind when he/they are spoiling a movie because it's so infectious and fun hearing about all of these oddball films. The absolute worst part though? Roger's commercials. Irritating, frustrating, and his attemps to switch voices/accents and then go into "Serious Roger Voice"... that's a 1-star (at best).

    An amazing treat
So awesome l didn’t know they were doing this I and many others were missing out

Superior Quality of Information for all Cinema Lovers
A podcast with Roger Avary, Gala Avary, and Quentin Tarantino talking about cinema and movies…what more could you ask for? I don’t want to know. What I do want to know is more about cinema and this is a superior source for information of just that. Thanks for everything you guys do and thanks to the team behind video archives!

    Best Podcast by a mile
This is the only podcast that I feel legitimately lucky to be able to listen to. Tarantino is my favorite writer and director. Having the opportunity to listen to him break down films is an incredible gift. And his co-host Roger Avary is equally insightful. The banter between them is funny and illuminating. And then Roger’s daughter Gala comes in to provide another great dynamic. After Roger and Quentin examine the movie, Gala gives her perspective which sends the conversation in a whole new direction. Fantastic!!

    Could listen all day
What's great about podcasts is you can listen to them while you do other stuff, particularly chores. Laundry, dishes, woodchopping, whatever.. Video Archives is good podcasting. I could listen to these guys talk about movies all day. I might even watch some of these films, if time permits. But many of them I have seen, and it's cool to hear perspectives from valued pros like Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary. I was one of those moody suburban kids who came to life in the early 80s when cable TV arrived. I would watch literally anythiing and everything that was on, even if I caught it halfway thru. Granted, most of the time, as a teen I was looking for boob, especially in the foreign films. Somehow in the midst of all that, I became a bit of a movie fan. We also had a great art-house theatre here in Louisville at the time, the Vogue, which was run and curated by some of the city's most deeply commited cinema nerds. I benefited from their love of film, just as I benefit now from Video Archive's unique and thought-provoking analysis. Thanks for sharing, and please keep on with it. You are appreciated.
  • Philip Duke II
You can enjoy without watching the films.
Been listening since they started. Always been a fan of Quentin and Roger. I love film discussions of any kind and these conversations are the best because they are what you may have over heard if you were shopping in Video Archives back in the day. There have been some great movies covered. Most of the time I just listen to the podcast and then decide which of the movies I want to watch. It’s a great podcast and if you are a fan of films then you need to subscribe. Thanks guys and Gala.

I’ve listened to every second since the show started. It’s become one of my absolute favorites! I wish the bonus shows every other week showed up on my feed!!!

    Best of the Best
I could listen to QT and Roger talk film all day. True cinephiles, with an unequaled passion that ignites my own passion for the medium.
  • AFedorov
    One of my favorites
I really love this podcast and look forward to it every Tuesday. The movies they pick and review are usually ones I’ve never heard of so that aspect of discovery is really fun. Plus it’s just cool to see how much Quentin and Roger know about film in general. Gala is also a really fun aspect of the show and she usually brings a different perspective as well. I’d maybe start with the episode that had Demonoid or The One Armed Executioner.

    Re-Review
If you love rare movies and great conversation about rare movies, this is the only podcast to listen to. Took a minute to get into the ebb and flow of things but I definitely enjoy the whole package, hope you do too!

    Pegi Boucher
Okay I loved all three movies from the latest episode and then started watching Private Duty Nurses because Quentin mentioned it. So good! Whatever happened to Pegi Boucher? There’s hardly any info about her
  • agent scully 20
    Kudos to Gala
I love listening to Quentin and Roger… but over time I’m become a huge fan of Gala. I love her insights and she brings a down to earth vibe that makes me appreciate the commentary about the movies even more. Thanks for including her as she keeps things really real for me.

    the story teller.
mr. tarantino has many titles associated with him, director, writer, producer, actor and so on. all of which he has mastered in my opinion. however the title i think truly describes him the best is story teller. tarantino has a knowledge of film, history and pop culture that few can even come close to matching. that and his gift of captivating you with his energetic and passionate way he speaks about anything he cares about will draw you in. and he always leaves you with a feeling of satisfaction that you learned something while also being entertained by a master story teller.

    My Favorite Podcast
I have been a diehard podcast listener for well over 10 years now and I can honestly say that Video Archives podcast is my favorite one yet. It’s funny and gives a good look into the brilliant film minds of Tarantino and Avery. Gala is a very good host and I love the movies they select every two weeks, it’s growing my depth of love and understanding of film.
  • NCSU4Ever
The PERFECT podcast for film geeks!
Tarantino and Avary hosting a podcast about largely obscure videos they watched while working at a video store? Yes please! Seriously, as a Tarantino fan and film geek, this just could not be any better. Love the passion, trivia, technical details, references, humor and everything else that makes this podcast great. Oh, and I really like Gala. I like the contrast between 2 experts and a “regular” movie buff. I think she does a great job. Ignore the complaints.
  • Nick McNulty
You're listening for QT. Fast forward through the rest.
Video Archives offers a conversational masterclass on B-movies. The show has introduced me to many movies I otherwise never would've watched (Alice Sweet Alice, Private Life of Sherlock Holmes) while also giving me a better look at established classics such as Dressed to Kill (the Eli Roth episodes re: American Giallo were a great listen). Even though Tarantino often stumbles over his words and misuses others ("intregal"), it's clear that he truly loves and appreciates every single frame on the screen. While the show highlight's Tarantino's enthusiasm for these movies, it highlights Roger Avary's pretentiousness (drink one every time he says "Cinematic language"). HIs rehearsed attempts at profundity lack any insight, and he's often the only person laughing at his own jokes. At the end of each segment, Gala Avary comes in, reading off the page of a sophomore year film essay, offering trite analysis such as "The cinematography literally gave me goosebumps."

    This is my tribe
A great podcast discussing movies from my youth. The podcast is augmented by a helpful website.
  • Maltlax
    Interesting movie selections
This podcast is always a great listen. I’d give it five stars, but Roger Avery can be a pretentious windbag at times (Arthur *Connan* Doyle, really?)
  • Robbie-ProAudioMixer
    The Podcast of Podcasts!
What a gift to my ears to hear these glib film legends discussing the films they pull off the shelves of the Archives. LISTEN NOW!!!
  • SampfordAndSun
    Can be a fun listen
Good stuff but QT really needs to share the mix and maybe try hiding his contempt for opinions that differ from his own. Great filmmaker but good lord I would not wanna hang with the guy.
  • Cast The Pod
    Great show
Awesome insight on lesser known & obscure movies by a master of film (& his trusty sidekick). My rating would’ve been 5 stars if this show was only Quentin & Roger providing commentary & analysis. Anyone other than these 2 on the show is unnecessary & superfluous.
  • GiveMeRealNewz
    Great Podcast !
Keep up the good work ! When you get a chance, can you please discuss these two great movies: Cinema Paradiso (Italian: Nuovo Cinema Paradiso) The Dark Valley( German : Das finstere Tal) Can Quentin provide more details about his retirement from making movies. Thank you !
  • Foamrubbermonsters
    So Much Fun!
Love it. Geeks Critique! Fire-pit ads cause actual involuntary cringe tho.

    A gift
This podcast is a gift. QT is a living legend and basically a film historian/expert.
  • The West Projectionist
    Fantastic Cinema Bantering
This show is amazing! QT and Roger are so full of knowledge on so many films, the main stream ones and especially the weird obscure ones. This goes to the top of my favorite film related podcasts with Saturday Night Movie Sleepovers and Transmissions from the Forbidden Planet. A must listen!
  • Rupert Pupkin (with a p)
    surprised!
i was a bit hesitant because i have to be in a mood for when QT is a guest on a pod or something. it’s always interesting to hear what he has to say but he has to say a lot! his show with Roger Avary is beautifully structured and paced. i understand the resources they have but still, this kind of makes me annoyed at other film pods with likeminded themes. they even found a way to make the ads fun and interactive with the material! Rogers daughters younger generation report is also a super intriguing take that adds to it. you can tell they put the TLC in. Bravo guys! can’t wait to hear more!
  • JakeBoswell
    So good!
I could listen to QT and RA talk films all day. Such a great podcast. Hopefully Eli can be a guest more often. He’s great, also. Shoutout to Gala too. She’s killing it!

Good Content and Makes a Great Drinking Game!
I enjoy listening to these guys pontificate about films, even if their taste is often dubious despite their petigrees. The best thing about the podcast is that Tarantino's verbal tics ("...alright?" and "....ok? and when he builds up a head of verbal steam and has to come down with a long "uuuuummmmmmmm") can be used as a drinking game. Believe me: by the end of a 90 minute episode, you wil be trashed. Gala Avary is ok as an announcer, but her presence in the film discussion mostly serves to demonstrate how much Roger Avary loves his daughter. It's mostly inside baseball, so casual film fans won't find much here to appreciate. That said, it’s fun to listen to passionate film lovers fawn all over terrible movies (Dressed to Kill, for one) with such genuine enthusiasm.
  • Timaaa
    Awesome !
Fantastic to hear this VHS SP duo have at it with perfect tracking. Gala is the perfect remote control. Press play and don’t forget to rewind.
  • jmh645
    Best movie podcast available
Did you except anything different from QT? Anything he touches turns to gold. I met him once at the Land of the Dead premiere he was nice guy and signed my dvd of pulp fiction. Still have it apart of my collection.
  • Celticsjc
The very best podcast for film fanatics
Omg!!! This podcast is so well done I have listened to every episode twice. I mean I like podcasts, but this is unusual. It’s surreal. Every movie they discuss I want to watch and although I have considered myself a pretty good student of movies I have not watched the movies they talk about which makes this like a renewed excitement for me to experience movies again good or bad. That brings me to my final thoughts. I absolutely love that they are honest about the good and bad of these films. It’s like a modern day Syskel and Ebert. So freaking good. Even the Advertisement Spot Reads are excellent. I hate Ads & fast forward, but these I listen too. Seriously! Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!!
  • Dr. Dicnose
+2 for QT, +2 for RA, and -1 for GA
A really good podcast, such a gift for cinephiles. The only way it could become better, turn that third mic off. This Gala is not an entertaining affair.
  • ibaron11
    Way better than expected!
Most famous people who try their hand at podcasting are boring and have nothing to say. Not QT! Amazingly insightful and entertaining at the same time. Roger is great too! Chemistry between them is fantastic.
  • BP6516
This is my favorite podcast EVER
This show is basically all I’ve ever wanted! 🤣 Searching for Tarantino interviews is what led me to even open the Podcast app for the first time, MANY years ago, and to finally have him able to hold court (with Roger Avary, of all people) is such a deeply satisfying experience! Gala (Rogers daughter) adds so much to no the main show and the in-between episodes as well! What a team!! What a show!!
  • Da Weave
    Ultimate Film Nerd Talk Fest!
What sets this retro film podcast apart from the pack is the long friendship between QT and RA. It’s a pleasure to hear them reminisce about their days working in the old Video Archives shop. It’s also fun to hear Roger Avary try and hold his own against QT’s formidable enthusiasm and as old friends they both give as good as they take. I get the sense that nothing has changed in that respect since they worked together all those decades ago. I also enjoy Gala’s take on the movies, as she offers a different generational and gender perspective. Finally, I appreciate that they include how and where the listener can view the film discussed. If you like deep dives into obscure movies of all kinds and you are even a marginal fan of the directors, give it a try. If you are a QT hater, why are you here? Life is short, listen to something else and keep your one star reviews to yourself.
  • Britt Ravenscroft
    Amazing Podcast!
My favorite thing is listening to QT talk about movies I’ve never seen.
