So grateful for the shoving matches
I’ve listened to every episode and freely recommend your podcast to friends, family and my patients. This episode, I appreciated the argument about what was considered abominable to Christ. I like most was taught the abomination was about the need to restore the plain and precious truths lost through the apostasy, which is still true. But Scot’s emphasis on restoring the power of Godliness through Priesthood and the New and Everlasting Covenant is also true. I agree that it needs to be equally emphasized. Im so grateful for the humble arguments and your scholarship making these things so accessible. I’ve never met you in this life, but I love you both as brothers and fellow disciples of Christ.

    Great teachers!
You two are the perfect people to teach us about D&C, can’t wait to listen. Do you all have transcripts of your show because I already need to look up quotes you shared.

    I highly recommend
I appreciate the scholarship and thoughtfulness that goes into each topic. The insights help to illuminate multiple perspectives and give context to our past. “The past is like a foreign country and we are but visitors.” - Griffin. Thank you for helping us to be more informed and thoughtful visitors.

    Learning
I did not pay much attention to church history while growing up and am grateful for this podcast to help me understand what occurred in our past. Thanks so much!

    Excellent!
I love the format of this podcast. I feel like we shy away from the controversies a lot in our church setting and I really appreciate them being addressed here.

Better than I expected (or even hoped)
I am glued to each episode, and I came to this podcast a bit late. The hosts are fantastic, the information timely, and the presentation engaging. I cannot recommend higher.

    Testimony reinforcing podcast
This is a great podcast that really dives into great subjects, and offers helpful insight into many topics of church history that can be difficult to understand without further explanation from people who have studied the topics in depth. Great job, thank you so very much for your work!

    Dose Religion Make People Violent
Thank you for this series, especially the episodes on the Mountain Meadows Massacre, I’m so glad and so sad that I know the truth about what happened. What strikes me is how cowardly it was to involve and blame the Native Americans. Another issue is how enemies of the church used or victimized the victims again by using the Massacre for their own political gain. I appreciate all you do.

    This podcast is AWESOME!
As an avid church history fan, I have really loved this podcast. I grew up in Fairport, NY which is just 20 minutes from Palmyra. I’ve always had a strong testimony of the prophet Joseph Smith and his incredible family. I have defended his name and purpose many times in my life. This podcast has deepened my understanding of so many different events throughout the last 200+ years our church’s history. It has also deepened my testimony of my Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ and their love for each of us. Thank you, thank you for all you do in bringing the world the truth behind these events and being transparent. It’s incredibly refreshing! Keep ‘em coming!

    Terrific Podcast
I’m loving this podcast. They are so thoughtful and thorough on sensitive topics. These are not easy topics to tackle but they do an incredible job. I have new found interest in church history that I was not aware I had.

    Time Well Spent
I’ve officially listened to every episode of Church History Matters up to this point. I’ve learned so much from listening and have found it to be uplifting and encouraging. Casey, Scott, their guests, and all those they borrow quotes from have brought these stories to life. I feel a stronger sense of gratitude and love for all those who sacrificed to keep this church alive. I also feel these histories make them relatable. They are not so different from us. They’re very human and still very much children of a loving God. It’s beautiful to me to hear the bad with the good, to recognize God’s hand in their lives, and to feel His love and patience for them. It gives me hope for us today. A GIANT THANK YOU to everyone who’s helped in the creation of this podcast. Keep it going!

    Love it
I’m so loving the history of the church. I tell everyone who is interested in history. You do a great job. Your microphones are good quality. Some shows I have a hard time listening to because of the quality of the microphones is poor.

    Marathons and Massacres
Regarding the Mountain Meadows Massacre, over the years I’ve run the St George marathon many many times and every time I’m amazed at the scenery and area that surrounds me. A few years ago my brother recommended a book called “Massacre at Mountain Meadows” by the authors I believe these hosts interviewed for the upcoming podcast. It really had a heavy impact on my spirit and that moment in history really struck a strong chord to my soul. During Covid I was taking care of some patients down in St George and decided to return along the St George marathon route. I’ve run it so many times I thought it would be fun to drive it in reverse but then stop at Mountain Meadows as I heard it was somewhat further beyond the start line. Little did I know that Mountain Meadows was literally just up with the road from the start line. When I arrived there is no doubt of the sanctity and sacredness of that place and you can just feel something heavy and hard to comprehend happened there. I was fortunate to be there on my own and really took a lot of time walking and pondering of the scenes that transpired. I have since read the sequel “Vengence is MIne” by Turley and every year I listen to both books prior to September 11th. I know for all of America September 11 is a day we remember but I also remember it for other reasons. I don’t hold judgement but I do feel it important to remember what happened there and how as a person I can try and not just be better but do better as a member of the LDS church and citizen of this country. I look forward to the podcast and just wanted to express some thoughts about what is coming. Thanks you guys, such a great podcast, probably one of the most meaningful and important there is out there. Taylor W

    Thank you and Love it!!
I wanted to thank you for the quality of your podcast. I’m a fairly inactive member who hasn’t actively engaged in church for years but your podcast has gently helped return the whispers of the Holy Ghost to my heart. You’ve helped me to understand deeper and appreciate the Gospel as well as the organization of the Church. Your authenticity, objectivity and honest views are 100% working. Reminds me of my mission and the feelings I had then. Again thank you. Regards a Latter Day Saint living in the Middle East.

    My Favorite Podcast
Your podcast is my 5 year old daughters favorite thing to listen to at bedtime. She asks if she can listen to Casey and Scott talk about the church almost every night. We both enjoy all the history and it has given me a lot of food for thought. I knew vaguely about many of the topics, but I really enjoy the deeper dives that the multi episode series’ provide. Thanks for all the time and effort you put in to creating these for us!!

    Great ACCURATE information.
I’m a life long member and local stake leader, hearing church history presented with historical evidence is very refreshing and has only increased my testimony. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking truth about the good, the bad, and the ugly parts that exist within our history. 10/10:)

    Binge worthy
I discovered this podcast a couple of months ago and haven’t been able to stop listening. I love church history but the way they present it and touch on all topics (hot or not) in such a concise and entertaining way has been so fun to listen to. I share it with everyone I know!

    Church history does matter.
I found this podcast as a suggestion to my listening preferences. I chose to listen to determine if I would like the podcast since I love history. I happened to start right when Casey and Scott presented the episodes of how to recognize truth and the steps to take. There are people I know who are conflicted and I also have been bombarded with information and I so I was interested in their thought process and how to understand or decipher myself, truth. I have listened regularly since then. I even wait some weeks for the next episode to “drop”. I have referred this podcast to all my friends and family. I think anyone who is unsure of their faith, has questions, is genuinely interested in church history, or loves history would find this podcast a serious resource. Thank you Casey and Scott

    History in context
Such a fantastic podcast. I’ve been listening for a while and find that Casey and Scott present church history topics in an honest and well researched way. I appreciate their candor about difficult topics in church history. They present these topics without sugar coating but also making certain their listeners understand the historical context of each issue. My testimony of the restored church has been greatly strengthened by listening to their words.

    I learn so much!
I love this podcast. I learn so much from their scholarship and I find them quite entertaining as well. I think many people would be able to resolve a lot of church history concerns if they would take the time to dive in and study the whole story. This podcast helps so much in that study process. Thanks guys. A fan in Brazil. 🇧🇷

    Context. Makes church history understandable
I’ve been listening for a few weeks and I’ve listened to several series (Blacks & the Priesthood, polygamy, the endowment, Church finance, etc.). I most appreciate that they put the history in context. Something that’s always been hard for me is that the Doctrine and Covenants is not chronological and we often teach church history out of order and out of context. I am actually excited to study the Doctrine and Covenants next year because I’m going into it with some context and a framework of viewing the restoration of the church

I really appreciate a space where I can learn about The Church’s history informed by scholars and experts. Very much needed. Thank you.

By study AND by the Spirit
The hosts of this podcast are religious scholars from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They are very open and clear about this and the importance of using scholarship to strengthen one’s faith. They are clearly biased in sharing their views and beliefs, however, they also adamant about the importance of each of us doing our own research. They provide this podcast as a tool to help our research and scholarly thought processes. They emphasize the importance of objective, critical analysis when doing scholarly research. This podcast is valuable in demonstrating that we don’t have to be afraid of historical facts. It helps to pull the church of Christ out of mystical realms, places it back onto practical foundations. The guests are world renowned as experts in their fields of study. They have gone deeper into their scholastic studies of these topics than many of us are capable of. The hosts have openly stated that their guests are more knowledgeable than the hosts. These guests, with all of their specialized knowledge, are still faithful and devout members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Some of the negative comments about this podcast accuse the hosts of being “apologists”. They are clearly not apologists. Rather, they simply provide the facts and evidences of the church’s history, claims, and operations. They unapologetically share their own thoughts and allow the guests/experts provide answers to listeners questions. As well as their training on how to more accurately/affectively look at history, they emphasize the importance of personal spiritual experiences. Jesus taught, “Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s and render unto God that which is God’s.” (Matt 22:15-22) History is always preserved by mortals who are limited by their own imperfect thoughts and emotions. No matter how well-meaning they are, they are only capable of seeing what they can see. Because of the limitations the world shapes into our perceptions and understandings, we need something more than the world can give us in order to understand eternal truths and greater insight into the eternal plan of God. Jesus taught us how live in a way that would enable us to draw on the powers of heaven. He promised that if we followed His way we would have access to the Holy Spirit as a comforter, guide, and teacher. One of the Holy Spirit’s primary roles is to testify of truth. Without the spiritual component, truth seekers will always come up short. The scriptures give repeated promises to the sincere truth seekers. God wants us to know and understand everything, but he is never going to force us to seek what he has to offer. It will always be our own individual choice. Something to keep in mind, is that a sincere seeker is not looking for a gotcha. He is not looking to prove anyone wrong or right. He just wants to understand and is willing to do the work to gain that understanding. He is willing to study and ponder the light God has already sent into the world to build foundations on which to grow. He will keep an open heart and an open mind, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide his understanding of the things he is studying and how to apply the knowledge he acquires.

    Helpful
This podcast has been very helpful to me in addressing questions and conflicts of my loved ones as well as helping me to navigate through my own concerns. It is historically and academically grounded and maintains a lovely balance between faith based responses and respect for opposing opinions. I look forward to each new episode.

    I’m hooked!
I first started listening when the series about the martyrdom of Joseph Smith came out and have been hooked ever since. I’ve gone back and listened to past episodes and series and have kept up on the current episodes ever since. Thanks for the great work! Keep it up!

    Great testimony
I was impressed by Bro Gehly and his testimony. I had no idea of this church and their belief in the Book of Mormon. Obviously there are some differences in doctrine and practices, but the podcast highlighted more commons than differences. Thank you.

    Not a Christian podcast
Warning! Not Christian. Mormons do not recognize the deity of our Lord Jesus.

    I love this podcast
I love this podcast and listen to it weekly. Many times I will go back and listen to episodes multiple times to make sure I learn and understand everything that is being said. Scott and Casey do a great job and I tell everyone I know about this podcast and to listen.

Fantastic podcast, let’s broaden it to all church history
I find this podcast fantastic and does a great job of not shying away from the multiple perspectives that can be had on a topic. This especially helps make clear the many nuances that are part of any historical situation. My only recommendation is to broaden it to all of church history. What I mean by this is to include not just church history from the early 1800’s onward, but wrap in the church history from more ancient times. There are both unique historical situations and analogous situations to modern church history that could enhance the discussion. The topics from modern church history are not necessarily unique. Our ancient ancestors also had to deal with similar issues; maybe there are some situations where it has been handled better than us moderns have done. Just a thought to consider. Thanks for all you are doing! Keep up the great work.

    One of my favorites!
I love church history and this podcast is one of my favorites. They are willing to talk about difficult subjects, but are so well informed that as a listener I feel like I can really get a sense for what was happening at the time and the circumstances that would have influenced the decisions and actions taken by previous church members. I love the topics they choose to discuss and love hearing all the stories I wouldn’t come across in my own study due to time and resources.
  • kendalljhill
Such a great platform for good information
I can’t get enough. I don’t have the time or the energy to sift through all of the sources and resources out there that deal with the history of the church. These two amazing brothers go that in a way that is entertaining, educational and defendable. I love when they nerd out on the details and spend many many episodes to deep dive on various topics. That is the kind of depth that is needed to understand or at least explore these difficult topics. Rather than breeze over difficult topics this podcast is not afraid to talk about them, and talk about the sticky points on both sides. Please keep up the good work!

    Easily my favorite podcast
This podcast is great! The history is sound, the doctrine is solid, and the perspective is incredibly helpful. The pat can be a scary place but Scott and Casey are great tour guides! Thanks for all you do!

    These Guys are Awesome
I was recommended this podcast by one of the members in my ward. I work in corporate for a company in the tech industry here in Washington DC. I’ve been listening to this podcast during my commute recently. For those that haven’t listened - these guys are the real deal. Knowledgeable, normal guys that give an incredibly fair analysis of the questions we’ve all thought about in early church history. It’s a relief to hear normal members break down these topics in a very relatable and instructive way. My wife and I along with close friends/family are learning so much! Of course, and this is what Scott and Casey articulate so well in every episode, history does matter but our own spiritual nutrition/revelation is the key to growing our own testimonies and enduring to the end. Thank you and please continue pumping these out - we love your show here in DC. Well done, guys!

    Deep dive into complex topics
Shout out to my favorite professor Bro Woodward! I look forward to listening to each weeks new episode. This podcast is a great source of inspiration and reliable information, presented in a way that doesn’t sugar coat difficult topics. Doing so helps me feel confident in my convictions. I share it with all my friends and family.

    Thorough and Less Biased
These guys do a great job walking through difficult church history topics. I have learned things that would have taken me weeks or months to discover on my own. It’s impossible to not have a bias, but I appreciate that they try to provide information as objectively as possible.
  • Kell10!
It’s too bad it’s clearly biased
This podcast is great, however, it’s clearly biased and instead of talking about the view points that drive people away they only discuss the points that support the church choices in current times
