The Zarna Garg Family Podcast

Family dinner table talk is dead. The new hangout for families is a shared WhatsApp message, it's a YouTube link, it's a forwarded TikTok. Join me in my new living room on The Zarna Garg Family Podcast, with my family members and other guests, as we explore modern life's most pressing issues like a modern family - through our own podcast.

    Disappointing - shallow
The analyses of elections and politics have been so vapid and shallow and self absorbed I can’t listen to/support this podcast. I feel the family is so money driven and their kids values the same. Nothing about being kind, caring for others, empathy, being in it together. This is not a representation of Indian Americans that reflects most of us. It’s possible to be funny while also holding some values beyond money gathering. Some examples from the last one: 1) you say Trump has surrounded himself with successful people this time around giving you confidence. Who? Elon Musk? What is success to this family? $/power whether you’re doing the right thing? Who else? Anyone from the military? World of education? Science? Technology? Law? Nope. 2) self absorbed disappointment about the election- “Trump was able to get away with all of these things as a man, I cannot as a woman”. You’re sad that you can’t get away with bad things? What does it say about America that we’ve elected a criminal? Do you care about the implications for all Americans? 3) you shared an example of someone having to decide between going out for breakfast vs coming to your show. Everyone makes choices between luxuries. You can share what you heard but maybe figure out if it makes sense. People have economic struggles but how were they in 2022? How were they in 2020 as a very notable comparison? 4) you reduced the choice between the economy vs “women’s rights” - this is a shallow and incorrect analysis. You came to the conclusion that men have been liberated to put women in their place. No concerns with that one. 5) the example of your house employee who voted for Trump because he doesn’t like how his money is being spent. How will his money be spent now? It might be worth mentioning the new admin wants to spend your money to deport humans on the order of 15 million and at the cost of 300 billion!

    Lacks empathy
I was really looking forward to this podcast, but I was disappointed by the narrow perspective. Instead of sharing personal experiences, the hosts seemed to dismiss the idea that pets can be a meaningful part of a family. For those of us without human children, our pets are incredibly important. If you don't have dogs that are part of your everyday life, it might be hard to understand. I wish they were more open to the diverse ways people live in the 21st century.

    Quotes
I agree with Veer. Quotes do not motivate me at all, stories do.

    A Shallow, Vapid Family
The more I listen to this podcast, the more I dislike this entire family. The parents are focused only on the financial performance of their children as adults. There is no consideration for art, culture or humanity in their lives. The parents drive the children to be the best at making money and nothing else seems to matter. Zarna is funny, no doubt; her stand up is a riot. However, listen to the podcasts and you’ll find that the entire family is driven only by financial success. I want to enjoy the podcasts but each one seems to get worse and more heartbreaking. Listening to these kids who are not interested in art, culture or values is really sad. “We’ve never been in a New York City museum. No one we know cares about that stuff.” And the parents agreeing is just sad. When it’s all said and done, is this what you really want out of life?

I so love this family. So much truth and humor, I laughed out loud during this episode.

    Thank you!
The podcast, series of very honest family chats, is also a great source for self-help and self-improvement. And, looking into myself. So, thank you Zarna, Shalabh (sometimes, I feel for you, man!) and kids! The humor underlying every discussion makes me feel like listening to them non-stop! We have started watching their YouTube versions, especially if Colbert is on vacation!

A+ to everyone in the Family
So funny. It’s been so long since I found a gold mine of fun. I’m literally laughing out loud like crazy. Everyone in the family beings new perspectives to the table and deserves an A+.

    Arguments :)
Love the podcast, but the yelling/arguing is off-putting, and causes stress. Hopefully we can hear more calm family discussions. Thanks!

    Your money or your life
I heard about your show from the wonderful episode of how you & your husband met on This American Life so thought I would try it. And I was not disappointed! Interesting, funny & I loved that your sons were included as well . So now I’m hooked & can’t wait to tell my friends. Please keep up the good work! Thanks Helen D

    Excellence
SO FUNNY. Every one of the family members brings something special (and hilarious) to the table. I love how the three kids are so close to each other. Also as someone who went through the NYC SHSAT grind (been a minute) I just want to take a minute to validate Brij 💛 Garg family, keep up the realness & the hilarity. You have a true fan in me!

Legit the funniest podcast I’ve listened to in I don’t know how long—I mean laugh out loud funny, with tremendous heart as well. An instant favorite.

    Episode One starts with misinformation
Sorry but way too much misinformation being shared in the very first episode. A bit of a turn off. The mom proclaims she doesn’t know what’s going on, asks the kids who tell her, then she’s just like “No” … Kids say we never had the talk, and mom asserts they did. And, mom promoting abstinence as a prevention method, clearly bad information. Parts of it is funny but it’s too frustrating to listen to on an ongoing basis.

    Funny, Smart, Witty
Zarna is so funny. The family dynamic is witty, fast pace, comical with practical life advice thrown in with the drama. Brij is bold, quick witted and in on the joke. They all are and it’s fun to listen to. Zoya’s search for independence and self discovery while merging traditional Indian and American cultures comes across confident and honest. Listening to the podcast reminds us all that a little comedy while raising a family is always needed in a crazy world. I could smell the pineapple!

So true ( I think !) and so funny!
My kids are a little older but I love listening to this podcast! We are not Indian (unfortunately, I know! ) but there are family similarities no matter what your race or origin is. Funny.

    Authentic and So Funny!
I can’t get enough of this wonderful family. Each member is smart, warm, earnest, delightful. They are so lucky to have each other.

    Entertaining
It so nice to hear another family praise and berate one another while in each others company……………..They are hysterical to listen too. Zoya and Zarna are my favorites each episode. Smart gals who are trying desperately to talk some sense into the male members of their family lol
  • phimcl
    Very funny
Thank you “This American Life” for turning me on to his podcast. I eagerly await every episode and you can ask anyone in my office that i literally laugh out loud at every episode. Thank you Zaria!

    Great new podcast
Fantastic family podcast! Every episode is as educational as it is entertaining. I was a bit turned off by the latest episode (home remedies). The family just kept talking over each other and it seemed that none of the family members was able to communicate much substance. Hopefully this was just an anomaly and not the norm for future episodes.
  • Pooja Xs
    Yay to Zarna Garg!
Love your show and I eagerly wait for the new episodes to launch. ❤️ My vote goes to Zoya in Home Remedies episode. Good job standing up for your mom and backing her up many times when Brij and his dad teamed up. Don’t wanna say anything about Veer , he’s just so cute and still innocent 💙

    Unexpected discrimination
I absolutely love listening to your show and your well spoken and insightful kids. I was surprised and disappointed to hear the sexist and homophobic undertones presented and supported by Dad. Thanks to Zoya for speaking up against these sentiments.

    Brilliant
My parents were immigrants. I grew up convinced that I “knew” how things work, and it’s certainly not the old, backward immigrant ways. Now I’m the mum with teenagers who scoff at my old-school ways. I love your conversations with your kids where you challenge them with your wisdom & humor. Bittersweet as I recognize my own youthful, steadfast certitude that I was more knowledgeable than my “ignorant” parents (both MDs). Youth will always value modernity over wisdom gained through experience. Saw your show in NYC. Now I follow and watch/listen to everything you create. Great work and brilliant that you make it a family affair. So relatable.

I think my new mantra is WWZD? The love, and wit of the entire family shines…not a podcast person, but Zarna and her family are the exception. Can’t wait for more episodes!
  • msavage5
    Everyone can relate!
I couldn’t love the Garg family more! We got to see a live taping of an episode and laughed until we cried. Zarna is honest, relatable, and obviously hilarious. Her children and husband are charming and so brave for discussing difficult and complicated topics so honestly! I left feeling reassured that marriage and parenting aren’t easy, but we’re never alone. My young son left feeling inspired to be a stand-up comic when he grows up. Zarna lovingly told him to study medicine on the weekends. Love her!!
  • Vividclicks
    Finally … honest talk!
So refreshing to hear asian families talk about “normal” topics! Thank you Garg family for keeping it real!

    She's brilliant!
    Nothing more to add
  • Magdalenarte
    This is pure brilliance.
I am hooked on this show and need more ASAP. Authentic and beautifully honest. There is so much love between the family members. The conversation is so genuine, and to top it off, it’s funny! There are some really funny moments, even hilarious moments, but the show’s brilliance is its originality.

    Hilarious and Breaking the Taboo
Love the way the conversations re carried out with authenticity. These are topics which more Indian families still don’t talk to kids. Good initiative 👍🏼

Zarna and family are funny, raw and authentic!

    Love This!
We love your content!!!!! My son is huge on family time. Just sitting at the table eating together makes him so happy. I didn’t grow up like that so I had to make the necessary adjustments to make him happy.
  • Melly Ray Cyrus
    Extremely insightful and entertaining!
Zarna is an incredibly candid and witty host taking on topics that most parents would shy away from, and by doing so, gives us permission (and courage) to explore them in our own family dynamics. It’s time well spent - not just for the insights, but also for the laughs.
  • Mani5667
    Love love
Loved the open talk!! Will come back for more!! Kids are amazing!

    My favorite new podcast!
I love your podcast. These are topics that all families should be discussing. I love that your children are open to the conversations. Love your family and wish you all the best with the podcast.
