    Beautifully Produced and Educational
A wonderful balance of show commentary, actor insights and education about the issues facing indigenous people in Alaska. So incredibly moving, stirring, thought-provoking… can’t find the right words but well worth the listen.

    Thought provoking
Found the series quite moving. Haunting even. It gave me a reminder that women struggle all over the world and in this case even worse for indigenous women. I appreciate this being highlighted to spread awareness.

    Fantastic Podcast
Found this podcast through Tenderfoot, and followed it right through to watching season 4. No regrets. I was put off by True Detective season 1, and I would not have given it a second shot if these discussions hadn’t tipped me off that season 4 would be a totally different experience. The thoughtfulness behind the storytelling and the ability to tell a harrowing story with humanity and hope was excellent. HBO’s been outdoing itself in hiring great storytellers.

A podcast about a tv show
Yawn. Made for fans of a tv show. Boring. Convert the stores to podcast stories. Worthless unless one has watched the tv show. Won’t be listening. Don’t have hbo or tv

Each season got better and better. I love how creative the stories were. And I love following along with the podcast.

A show about AK Arctic not filmed in AK
I watched the show. It was gripping, as this series always is. 5 stars for content. I also have no issues with this pod. But I am beyond annoyed that a show about AK Arctic isn’t filmed there. I live in a small village in south central AK. Yep. It can be challenging & I’m not even in the Arctic. But logistics can be dealt with. Please explain why you needed to film in Iceland rather than AK. Makes me sad that other shows on reality TV could make it work, but not HBO/MAX.

So much more than just a TV show
It’s not an exaggeration to say that this show and podcast changed me. The creators have made something important, indelible, and incredibly entertaining all at once. The podcast added so much to my experience, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

    Powerful
This show and podcast give a powerful and lasting message. I urge everyone to watch the show and follow up with the podcast! Issa Lopez I am in awe of your storytelling. Thank you to this podcast for helping us go even deeper and understand the intricacies of what was being conveyed. Thank you for bringing more awareness to the horrific effects of colonialism and the severity of MMIW and MMIP. Most importantly showing the connectedness, joy, and empowerment of Indigenous communities. One of the most impactful shows and podcasts I’ve experienced.

    Digging Deep
I initially watched the show and then heard about the podcast. I rewatched the show as I listened to each podcast episode. I loved the insightfulness from the director, the actors and the host. It gave me a deeper appreciation for all aspects of the show, it was fantastic.

    Learned so much
I loved the series so much. It was great to listen to this afterwards and learn so much more about the communities. It made me appreciate the series even more!!!!

    Amazing!
Loved learning more about the series through conversations with the director, actors, cinematographer, sound designer, and the entire collaborative team. These truly in-depth episodes reveal how dynamic storytelling can translate on screen. The way the female-centric narrative and Native spiritualism are portrayed in the series and discussed here in the podcast is phenomenal. And director Issa López and actors Jodi Foster and Kali Reis are all beyond amazing!

    Inspiring and informative
Such a great podcast. Brought the show to life even more. It was beautifully and thoughtfully done. Centers Inupiaq and female voices to everyone’s benefit.

    I don’t get it
I love listening to official podcasts especially those shows on HBO or Max as they’re known now. This is by far the worst of those podcasts. I listen to the podcasts in hopes of finding a detail or two that I missed. The podcasts are only about 30 minutes long and on some of those it seems like half of the podcasts are spent on social commentary and that’s not why I listen.

    From Great to Excellent
I very much enjoyed the show on its own for couple episodes, but the experience became so much richer once I discovered this podcast. Highly recommend enjoying the show & the podcast together. Entertaining and so enriching.

    Intriguing
I love the podcasts Rythmn and insight into aspects of Alaskan life, indigenous issues that are issues for all in the end, and listening to writer, director, actors and their process to make this fantastic series. I love hearing their native languages in the interviews. Highly recommend.

    I Leaned so much!
HBO always produces amazing companion podcasts. However, this one not only was interesting and entertaining but also extremely insightful. I leaned so much about Alaska and the native people and history. Thank you!

    Incredibly well done podcast
The show is exceeding all of my expectations, even as a True Detective fan. The podcast itself is so well done and is opening my eyes to many topics that I would not have known about or considered.

    So fulfilling
I love this series. Couldn’t wait for the episodes to drop. My most favorite thing about it is the female presence throughout. The writing was great! I loved how Danvers eventually came aroundAnd Navarro learned her name. Denvers daughter finding her indigenous self. Issa can really spin a story!

    Brilliant Pod!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Congratulations on a brilliant podcast! You offered a us a place in real life to direct all of the care we have for the show’s character. Thank you.
  • rrodgers88
    Too opinion focused
Way too focused on politics and forcing the creators agenda/opinon on the audience. You should never ask your audience for a five star review, earn it. The woke agenda took precedent over story telling here, which is sad. This was an amazing series.

    Great show, wonderful podcast
I actually watched the entire show before I knew about this podcast. This is, in my opinion, the best season of True Detective so far. The cast and crew are outstanding! I had heard this podcast advertised on another podcast, and thought it sounded great. I have learned so much about the Indigenous community and the how’s and why’s things are reflected the way they are in the series. It is so well done, and I am loving this podcast. Thank you for such an insightful look into a fascinating season of True Detective!
  • ETorresEvans
    Well done!
This podcast and series has shed more insight and created more interest into the culture, dynamics and dramatic beauty of Alaska and it’s indigenous citizenry. The nod to the matriarchy, the “aunties network” and the lifelong walk of those of us of mixed heritage-not fitting in or accepted by either culture, all resonated with me. Listening to the podcast for the first time, watching the series for the second. Well done to all.
  • Thedimpled1
    Disappointed
I loved the show even when it started going left around episode 3 or 4. On the flip side, this podcast was horrible. I was looking for clarity and intention of the episode. I got neither. I was bored out of my mind. Makes me feel like there was no real direction except to spotlight the atrocities committed against the indigenous people.
  • ToniBght
Wonderful podcast that adds extra context to the story behind Night Country!
Reading all of the other comments from people who say this podcast is “horrible” only tells me they’re naive to the issues we face as Alaska Native people in rural Alaska. This perfectly illustrates the MMIP crisis, the environmental issues and the law enforcement negligence we face in rural Alaska. I understand not everyone is going to know about these issues, but that’s literally what this host is trying to educate you about. I watched the episodes each week and then I would come and listen to the podcast episode that went with the tv show episode and it just brought it full circle for me. I appreciate the producers willingness to listen to Alaska Native voices to make her show sensitive to our culture and heritage. If you’re not Inupiaq I think this may be a hard thing to grasp and that’s just another instance of people who are not Alaska Native being not unwilling to listen to us and learn from us. - You did a wonderful job, Qannik! And I loved your voice. It was very soothing and easy to listen to. If you want to learn more about Alaska MMIW/MMIP I do tell their stories on my TikTok: @alaska.mmip -Unaqsiq, Alaska MMIP victims’ advocate

Top 5 worst podcasts for the worst show I’ve seen in a long time
I thought the show was unrealistic and dumb then I listened to the podcast and it was so much worse than I originally thought.

    Raising Consciousness!
My Wife & I found this Season of TD to be one of the very best! Not only was the Show attention grabbing, Week to Week, and the Characters were developed despite the Short amount of allotted time, but the “Icing On The Series” was the ability of the Showrunner’s to include the extremely sensitive topic of Indigenous Tribes, long-standing and wanton disregard, by our mainly White Culture, for the Thousands of their Female Tribe Members, who regularly are Victims of Physical and Emotional Abuse and the unbelievable Number of Indigenous Female Group Members who become “Dissappeared” and are rarely, if ever, found again! Also, the pointing out of the seemingly, indifference of our Law Enforcement Agencies and “Lack Of Interest” in searching for the Women and the Perpetrators of these ghastly Crimes! My Wife and I, due to our following of TYT and other Progressive Outlets were, somewhat aware of the Problem, however, comma, this Sublime Series brought the ongoing problems of Indigenous Peoples, continuing problems with “Missing And Sexually Abused Women” splashed into our Faces, so much. That we feel obliged to help and contribute to Legitimate Resources for the further Protection and Search for lost Indigenous Peoples!! A Hearty Salute to “True Detective:Season 4” and MAX for airing the Show! David R. Moss, MD & Arlene Campochiaro, MBA

    Awesome show
This companion piece to the tv show is fantastic. It was so illuminating to the complexity of the show, how indigenous culture and stories were such a big part of the writing and creation of the show. I really loved hearing the director and other crew speak about the making. Well done!!

    Fantastic companion podcast
This is the best companion podcast I have ever listened to. Besides getting the background about the creation of the show content and interviews with actors and director and crew, I loved the way it drew connections to real world events and the MMIW situation. Informative, compelling, troubling, and professionally conceived and executed. Awesome🙌🙌🙌

But there were men in this story too
While I appreciate that there were very strong female stories in Night Country, there were some sting make roles as well. I wish the podcast had explored these roles more deeply and how these men were influenced by the strong women in the story.

    Wonderfully Done

    Wow
So the show was really amazing bc the acting, writing, direction and film production was spot on!!!! 6 stars!!!! I am a woman and I have coached rowing for over 20 years. Rowing is stupid hard with little ya-yas but it’s kinda addicting and attracts women who love community and hard work. In no way does this mirror the community of women in the series bc rowing is generally about privilege but the pride, connection and joy the women show is very similar on a rowing team. No one really watches rowing bc it’s so boring and rowing in general is not inclusive or equitable but Title 9 has changed things for the better in some areas and made it worse in other areas but I digress…bottom line I connected with the characters in the best possible way…..when I finished the series it left me with lots of unanswered questions and I had seen the ads for the podcast so when I finished the series I binged the podcast. This podcast is so fantastic. It’s so real. It’s not sensational It’s AUTHENTIC We have little or no authentic women’s voices in media. Not really. We see women molded by too many cultural factors that make then seem less like women and more like paper dolls if that makes sense. One dimensional creatures who ARE NOT REAL Young women are bombarded by these visuals and feel less than so much of the time. Our culture does not really want women to show who they really are in my opinion . We have come so far but we are still so stuck! It’s incredible to me that we are over 50% of the population and we still have such a small platform. Thank you thank you thank you For lifting us up. The joy you describe is the sensation of achieving equity or justice in an unjust world and that is pure power. If every young woman has one such experience in a lifetime she is lucky and she will never forget what that feels like. It will change her forever! I’m a better human for listening to your podcast. Not A Snarky Podcast
I learned so much, listening to this podcast; not just plots and character development, but spiritual depth, tribal traditions, and the struggle of indigenous women to survive a fiercely patriarchal society. Good interviews with the series stars, too. Well done!

    Insightful
It was nice to learn what went into the writing and design off the show. I likes hearing from the actresses about their process and thoughts on how they became the characters in the show.

This is the gold standard in companion podcasts for television series!
This should be the gold standard for companion podcasts and television series. The storytelling, the history, the interwoven stories from the show itself, and all of the interviews from the cast, too the Director, sound designers, and show runners was unbelievable. I was equally hooked to this podcast as I was to the show. I am grateful that they spent a great deal of time highlighting indigenous, women, and indigenous women who have been murdered. It was also a master class in not fracturing ourselves but pulling in everything we care things care about, and showing the interconnectedness of ourselves to our communities and the people we call neighbors. Great job! 👏🏽
  • Former Qapital fan
Did not satisfy my low expectations.
The podcast would have been more enjoyable if it were a bit more spontaneous. It was obvious the host was simply reading a script the entire time. The series itself also failed to achieve the standard set by the first season. I would put this season more on par with season two. That said, the leads did a great job with what they had to work with.
