One of the best China podcasts
Always interesting topics, great guests, really well done show hosted by veteran journalist Jane Perlez.

    Tired of western perspectives
I thought this show would be a much more comprehensive look into US China relations, but in reality, it’s nothing more than western liberals interviewing Chinese liberals. Where are the communists? Where are the people that are supportive of China’s government?

Just the right level of sophistication
Easy enough for a non-specialist to understand, not too wonky, but deeper and more nuanced than the China takes you read on Op-Ed pages or hear in other podcasts.

    Insightful and lively
This is a wonderful way to digest the US-China relationship. Jane Perlez is a wonderful interviewer and raconteur.

I learned a new way of thinking about China and how we should think about how the PRC may look at an issue. Learning how to look at an issue in a different way is a wonderful talent and Jane has it.

Excellent in depth analysis of US China relations
This is the best pod cast I’ve come across that focuses on the most relevant issue facing the US and China, and that is bilateral relations. I’m hoping for a season 2

    Face Off
Fantastic podcast with both sweep and terrific anecdotes

    Great series
The consistent talk on main stream media of a zero sum game of endless competition between the US and China and the fear mongering is so depressing and uninformed. So grateful for Jane Perlez’s informed series that brings fact, nuance and common sense rather than hysteria to the conversation.

Best China pod cast out there!
This is by far the best pod cast on China’s relations with the world that I have come across. As an international security expert I highly recommend this to anyone looking for in depth China insight. I particularly like the ‘break-down’ discussions at the end of the episodes.

    Valuable
The is an impressive and important podcast. It presents a leading concern of our time - the China -United States relationship -in a calm, adult, rational, balanced, educated, and yet still very listenable way. It’s very informative.

    Well Done!
China is a formidable challenge to global economic coexistence and a military threat as well vis a vis Taiwan. Insights provided in these podcasts give the listener a better understanding of the potential risks the US faces today and in the future.

    What valuable perspective
I feel like I’ve been limited in my understanding of China by the standard Western reporting. I am grateful for the texturized perspectives this podcast provides. Great work! Keep it up!

    Informative and Polished
Jane has gathered together a wide variety of voices on China. Combining them with her own experience gives me the feeling that I’m being given an opportunity to look behind the curtain on China. This podcast is well produced with little variation of volume and no early cut-outs.

    Discovery
Despite traveling to China in the seventies, Nanjing and Shanghai in 2019, and reading current books and articles, I have always felt in the dark about this global superpower. But thanks to Jane’s insightful, well-researched and conversational-sounding interviews, I’m feeling a little more enlightened. Listeners are taken on thought-provoking journeys. Really enjoyed the story on Apple and the interview with Yo-Yo Ma. Good production value too. I’m looking forward to discovering more voices…! Fiona McDougall, Producer 5/10/2024

Ok, full disclosure: I’m biased because my book on Cold War/ CIA activity in China (Agents of Subversion) was fortunate to be featured in one of the episode. Putting that aside, dispassionately speaking, Face-Off is just fantastic, a tour de force of US-China relations, a must-listen when it comes to maybe the most important bilateral relationship out there.

    Well done and credible
This is one of the best China focused podcasts out there, and one of the big differences is the in-country and on-issue experience brought to by the host, the excellent Jane Perlez. Jane brings a lot to each episode, letting the guest carry the show but adding great insights all along the way. Refreshing also that the podcast does not have an agenda or spin, with really good expert guests and frank but no -ideological takes on the many tough issues in the US China relationship, the most important foreign policy issue of our time. Bravo!!

Deep dive into the China question
Fantastic examination of the necessary and difficult relationship between two superpowers. Dr. Mitter’s analysis provide further understanding of the nuances on China. Jane does an excellent job as usual. Looking forward to season two!

    Important Work
Face Off does an excellent job raising important issues on US China dynamics. It impacts us all.
  • Jonathan Landreth
    Great structure for sharp insight
“Face Off” is an important listen. Each episode so far starts with a bit of intriguing historical tape, a scene, an event, followed by host Jane Perlez engaging a key participant in, or observer of, said event in a sharp, in-depth conversation. Finally, Perlez asks historian Rana Mitter to unpack and interpret the core interview. The result for the listener is an invaluable package of perspective on the roots of the growing tensions between the US & China. If you’re trying to making sense of the world today, treat yourself to this podcast. - Jonathan Landreth, Brookyln, NY

Can’t wait to hear the series
Despite the political situation at home, where compromises can’t be reached between the political parties, the geopolitical environment may be more of a threat to the country. As an expert in US-China relations, Jane Perlez, will provide expert analysis in a clear, understandable way. Looking forward to this series immensely.

    Hugely valuable!
This is such a good listen - riveting audio, geopolitical drama, terrifying stakes - all told with a sharp eye, a sense of humor and much hard-earned wisdom by one of the best foreign correspondents of our time.

    Incredible Insights, Wonderfully Produced
It would be hard to put together a better duo on US-China, and Face Off’s trailer makes clear this podcast will become a must-listen for those interested in understanding why we are where we are. Jane is already an incredibly gripping story teller. Coupled with the top-tier production, chocked full of real-life dialogue and immersive sound work, it is going to be hard to put this podcast down. Eagerly awaiting the complete series.

    Essential Listening
Veteran journalist Jane Perlez’s reporting on modern China is unparalleled, and this podcast will be no exception. We should all be paying attention — and tune in as she and Rana Miller talk to spies, diplomats, economists and more.

Get Smart on China Before it Outsmarts the West
Layered, complex and foreign, Chinese politics and society needs an interpreter for the West. I know of no one who digs, explains and narrates a story better than Jane Perlez. Her “The Great Wager” podcast in ’22 is a gem. A long-time NYT foreign correspondent, Jane is a no-hype story teller who draws you in episode after episode and makes you, too, a sophisticated China-watcher.
  • GarfieldG
    Can’t wait
Compelling trailer plus deeply knowledgeable narrator/host plus perfect timing on the topic suggest a don’t-miss series is poised for take-off. Hard to imagine a better pilot than Jane Perlez. Seat-belt fastened for a good ride.
  • BARRYFAN12
Know one knows China like Jane Perlez
I have only heard the trailer, but it sounds fantastic. I know Jane Perlez’s reporting from he NY Times and no one has better insight into the many nuances of the US/China relationship.
