    Michael Shellenberger is a narcisst
Hey Glen. I think Elon Misk is bad g- BECAUSE HE IS A BAD F-ING guy Seems! Full stop lol. It’s also silly thought to label peeps who want to enable civilization to improve and evolve as ‘Anti - Civilization’. But Glen, you do LOVE your labels. . .

    I still love this show.
I loved the pushback by John in this episode with Keith Ellison. However, I wish there had been more. He contradicted himself a few times regarding the cause of excessive crime by black youths, and completely avoided responding when asked if “Kayla” would have been caught in the crossfire at a white party. Y’all just needed the show to be an extra hour! Keep up the great work.

    Sanity in an insane world
Glenn and John are some of the most important voices today. Appreciate how they bring sanity and reason to many difficult topics. And they make me laugh!! 😂

    Great podcast and guest suggestions
I absolutely love your podcast. I appreciate the wide array of spectrums you present on the most contentious and highly charged of issues (and nobody presents the counterfactual arguments better than you). In the wake of 10/7, you have had several guests on regarding Israel/Hamas as well as anti-semitism, I am hoping you might consider Bari Weiss or Dan Senor as guests on these topics as well to present additional sides to these debates. Keep up the amazing work (and love John M too)!

Thought-provoking and relevant podcast. And Glenn Loury has the BEST laugh!

    Great show
Addressing issues in America, that need to be talked about.

Ignorant guest - JVP is not really made up of Jews.
Invite Bari Weiss on! Re JVP, Look at the phony who ran their twitter and was outed. Very few JVP followers are Jewish

    Why Daniel bessner?
Why give this guy a platform? Not smart. Very pleased with himself. Not an equal to the rest of the participants in this conversation.
  • lrhhrl
    Daniel Bessner is awful
What an unimpressive guest who keeps getting invited back on to rant. The guy yells about elites and then talks like a typical ivory tower know-it-all.

    Listener from Israel
Long time listener, first time reviewer. Overall, I find the podcast interesting and thought provoking. The most recent episode with Robert Wright certainly fit the bill, even if parts of it were extremely difficult to listen to as a Jew living in Israel. I can suggest (and hope) that you stay true to the liberal values espoused on the show and invite on someone who can accurately and intelligently respond to some of Wright's framings and arguments. Thanks.

Carol Swain is misguided and has no objective viewpoint at all.
I just found myself at this podcast as I was referred from Sam Harris who I listen to regularly. I prefer not to spend too much time listening to delusional people like Carol Swain. How someone like that can hold any position of authority is extremely concerning to me. She is misguided at best and I found her dialogue and arguments essentially incoherent. Not suitable for an intelligent audience.

    Challenge guest logic consistently please
Usually rigorous discussions but couldn’t finish the Carol Swain episode

    Redundancy personified…
Lots of polemics, single-issue focused, discussions are rational and accurate in scope and nature, but the repartee grows tiresome…

    Thoughtful and Interesting
Glenn and John always have interesting conversations and explore various viewpoints.

    Missed opportunity
Just listened to your discussion with Prof. West. While I find many of Prof. West’s ideas hopelessly utopian or just naive, he does have a very logical corpus of ideas that bear taking into account. You were really into an important issue when you two talked climate, and you missed a big opportunity to push back against Prof. West’s dangerous misinformation about “apocalyptic scenarios”. Very glad you brought attention to Prof. Koonan’s book but wish you had pushed back harder by saying that there is NO science supporting any apocalyptic climate outcomes—-a warming world is only apocalyptic in the warped minds of leftists/greens/progressives who use that story to foster their civilization-destroying agendas ….unfortunately all too successfully to date.

    Courage smarts and sincerity
Listening to Glenn and his guests is like a hot shower for the intellectually homeless. Keep testing your ideas against the heavyweight thinkers of our time so that we all might listen in and move the conversation more in the direction of the truth, whatever that may be. Iron sharpens iron.

    “What are most Republicans like”
John Since you have lumped a large % of the society in one group. As in those people. I n the next podcast please list the top ten attributes “ those people” have in common. Those being Conservatives. I await your response Respectfully Bruce, Grand Rapids MI.

    Erudition + evasion = error
Between John’s systematic, deterministic excuse-making for Omar’s atrocities, and all of the pseudo-intellectual, anti-economics academic Marxists (and assorted other charlatans) Glenn can find to prostrate himself before, you can be sure that any respect you had for these men’s courageous “heterodox” thought will be swiftly and severely curtailed. Now you can add to this menu cultivated cluelessness about the nature of Palestinian activism and its Leftist fellow travelers. When Glenn is morally exercised about a pet cause, he is often incisive, extremely eloquent, and a joy to listen to. But righteous indignation only works when you know what’s right. And in far too many cases, Glenn is fundamentally concerned not with reality, but with performative collegiality and craven conformity to an irrational mob (of tenured professors). In the face of some urgent and obvious truth, Glenn can always find a nuance to hide in.

I am grateful for these courageous men and women who speak words that I savor but yet will get them nothing but grief from people of color.

    Commercials !!!’
I gave this podcast a ONE because it’s constantly interrupted by stupid commercials. Maybe take a hint from other podcasters, like Bret Weinstein, Dr Andrew Huberman, Lex Fridman, who have commercials in the beginning from their sponsors, then are commercial-free, so listeners can actually focus on the content!!!

    Good not Great
I started listening to this show because Glen is an economist at Brown. Unfortunately, this show discusses very little economics. It is mostly about race, culture, and politics. This is fine, in fact the hosts are very informed on these subjects. Please just don’t advertise yourself as a podcast on economics.

    Incredible thought nuance
Glenn, I want to thank you for your fierce defense of democracy and free speech. I was listening to your greatest hits of 2022 episode and when I hear people explain that there are some outcomes so terrible that we should censor their information, I want to yell out exactly the response you gave. The fact is, there are a lot of people who disagree about Trump, many of which are not fervent supporters in a religious sense, but they have a very different idea of how things should be run. This is a valid debate that we MUST have and convince one another. It’s totally wrong to just assume that all of those people are so wrong that they don’t even deserve to have access to certain information that may or may not reinforce their position. You could not have said this more eloquently. Thank you for bringing clarity and practical sense to the conversation at all times.
  • Kimberly, is that you?
    Thoughtful discussion
I really enjoy the Glenn Show. Glenn Loury and his frequent co-host John McWhorter sometimes agree and sometimes don’t but the discussion is always thought-provoking and well worth listening to!

I just wish that I could have the kind of discussions with my friends, often at odds but always respectful, that these two men have.

You two continue to be my North Star with your discussions of issues that I am powerless to enunciate. Your shared intellect, and yes, your levels of melatonin, allow the two of you to say things I may think, but certainly can’t say. I hope the two of you outlast me in this Earthly realm, because you two make me smarter

    Thank You Glenn and John
Hello All - Though not politically aligned on most stuff with John, I have to give Glenn major kudos for providing a platform were complicated cultural issues with no easy answers can be debated, discussed, and debunked by reasonable people. This is a rarity in our polarized media landscape where clicks and downloads tend to drive content decisions. John McWhorter's thinking and writing is incisive and Glenn Loury's contributions round out every point. You all are probably thinking of doing a "spin-off" show in the future, and we'll keep an ear out here for it if you do. Thanks again.

Love Glenn’s intelligence, wit, honesty and enthusiasm. His latest with Amy Wax was one of his very best.

I have become a huge Glenn Loury fan. Erudite but also hip, intellectual but also down to earth. Great listening.

    Important
Glenn Loury is essential listening for understanding race in America
  • Keepitwildtv
    John got it wrong.
Why was John allowed to let a falsehood stand by claiming that the Buffalo shooter was from the right? He claimed that he was a communist at one time and considers himself as part of them “authoritarian left” and an “eco-fascist.”
  • buyigiyugygkuykig
    Thank you Sir
Mr. Loury thank you so much for speaking about race. I truly appreciate your amazing speech you gave at the end of your episode with Bob Woodson and Sylvia. In the past two years my head has been spinning. I cannot believe the views the leftist regime has been espousing. I don’t think and never have thought that black and brown people are less than and that they need white people to help them. It is pandering and so disrespectful. I do not understand the world we are in where race and gender have become this mentally Ill obsessive focus. I so appreciate your discussions, they give me a small bit of hope.

    Five stars but....
Love Glenn and John but I disagree with Johns take on Tucker Carlson. Johns account of Tucker leads me to believe he is only watching curated clips of Tucker and is not someone that watches and reads Tucker. Tucker never condemns the people coming over the border. Tucker rightly condemns the lawlessness and the cynical way that the open borders are being manipulated by the progressive left in order to retain their POWER. Tucker is a classical liberal on these issues. No one benefits from Open borders except the elites and the cartels. The people that suffer are the middle and lower class. And how does John justify this and justify open borders and all the harm that it causes by overburdening an already burdened system. John ascribes to Tucker the characterization promulgated by the left wing media. Sorry John but your analysis of Tucker is LAZY

    Briahna Joy Gray debate
I also found my way here from Glenn’s conversation with Jordan Peterson. And I appreciate his openness to engage in serious discussion with those who have different views and willingness to listen to their points of view and yet hold his own ground. Regarding forgiveness of student loan debt, I share his points of view - these are obligations willingly undertaken by those who perceived a benefit would come. Setting aside any predatory schools and/or lending practices, which is another issue; Ms. Gray’s comments about societal pressure to attend college do not constitute predatory practices. Ms. Gray’s comments about since it is Federal debt it can be forgiven and doesn’t create some other burden (paraphrasing) miss the mark in my mind. She uses the analogy of borrowing $10 from a friend and them forgiving the debt and it having no impact or no further impact on the friend since they made the decision to relieve the debt. A couple of thoughts - it does have a cost to the friend/lender - it’s the opportunity cost of what else they could have done with that $10, but since it was theirs to freely give, they made that trade off. In the case of Federal debt - “Federal” is the collection of “we the people” and so the forgiveness of college loan debt assumes that “we the people”, the taxpayers, would view this as more important than some other need for the country. The fact that we may or may not have to collect additional revenues through taxes to discharge the debt is irrelevant. Keep us the good work Glenn!

    Civil Discourse.
I found my way here from Glenn’s interview with Jordan Peterson. I have listened to a couple episodes so far, and I enjoy the debate. Both guests he had on were kind and respectful. They disagreed, but there was no insults or belittling. It was great to listen too. Keep up the good work.

    Briahna Joy Gray
Medicare is not free - I’m 66 and paying 600.00 a month for A, B and N. I pay another 60 for dental. My hearing aids and glasses are out of pocket. Student debt - it’s real debt and our yearly budget to pay our current debt of 31 trillion is in the 600 billion a year and it will go up as rates increase. Much of it is held by foreign countries like China. It’s real as we pay people and other countries real money. That’s money we cant spend on things we really need. Obama is worth somewhere north of a 100 million. His student debt was a good investment. It’s not my fault someone paid 100k for a degree in DEI or gender studies which is worthless and creates no positive value to society. Musk creates thousands of high paying jobs and those people pay taxes. She misses that concept. Take money from him that is less jobs and less tax revenue. His factories also create thousands of added jobs in vendors to Tesla. Brianhna and her age group scare me as I have grandkids.

    Contrarianism
Glenn Loury is a contrarian hence why his worldview shifts radically with the times. When the Left was in retreat and unpopular he was Left, now that Left is culturally in power he eschews it. He takes on and off radical religious views: an extreme Christian after being an extreme drug addict he now questions religion.
  • forofkd
    General observation
I wish America could relax. Dr. Loury can help us relax. This is a great country. We are not an evil people. Find me a family without problems and I’ll show you a sitcom. Yes, we have problems, but we also hang out our dirty laundry more than any country - today or historically. Perhaps there is too much money and too little awareness of the ills of social media. Can we fix it? Yes. How? Relax and converse. We can solve our problems but we need dialogue.

    Red Herring
    1. Audio needs to be better. 2. Get better guests. Presumably we are supposed to listen to Harris because he is smart, informed, and thinks about these issues. Yet, his first counter argument with AA in sport is plain silly, unsophisticated, and I’m surprised Glenn was not more embarrassed by it.

Disappointed by the pathetic anti-media ranting
Sometimes interesting, but it devolved into irrational and dishonest media bashing. I expect a more nuanced view from people who actually work in the industry. It was kind of pathetic.

Glenn and John talk Affirmative Action
I loved hearing your perspective on the issue of Affirmative Action. As a recently retired white educator who spent my career in low performing, academically challenged schools, my greatest concern over the years has been the lowering of expectations and requirements (lowering the bar) for all students. It’s not just black students who are suffering, although probably more so, for this trend happening in education, it’s all students! Our students are graduating high school but do not have the ability to read, write, and think critically at a level to perform on the college level. But when I advocated for LEAs and the educators there to raise the bar, expect more, teaching more complex, intellectually challenging material I was met with opposition, not from students but from the institutions serving these students. I retired!!

    Refreshing outlook on many topics
The honesty and thoughtfulness of Glenn (and John too) always makes me feel better about the state of things. We need more true thinkers with courage like these gentleman.

    These men are a treasure!
Two of the most solidly reasoned intellectuals in America today. Keenly observed, thoughtful, and principled. They are truly trying to help America get better with integrity and the primacy of the individual as guide stars. Do yourself a favor and subscribe!
  • Dr. Dres shreds
    Cogent but Tendentious
I appreciate the cogently heterodox perspectives offered by these two profound cultural critics. McWhorter is a true intellectual who, despite his contrarian leanings, is always intellectually honest. Loury’s arguments, however, strike me as tendentious if not disingenuous. I would love to hear the two discuss topics outside of the dogged insistence on race, but they play to their audience. Also, show needs better editor—in the last show, when John had technical issues, Glenn did about ten minutes of dead air. In a podcast, you can edit it out, Boomer!
  • stump_jumper
    Actual discussion about tough issues
Such a refreshing difference from partisanship. Sometimes hard to listen too if you don’t agree, but it is only by hearing balanced, in depth discussions about race, poverty, education etc. that we will solve them. If you find you are about to tune out because you can’t stand the point of view, grow some, challenge yourself, listen to the end and reflect on what you have heard. Embrace that podcasting is one of the few truly free platforms left.
