A History of Europe, Key Battles

519

A podcast on European conflicts from the perspective of each side to provide an alternative to the traditional national narratives. Going chronologically from the Ancient Greeks onwards I will describe to some extent how each battle was won or lost by particular decisions, tactics, technology or fortune. But the aim of each main narrative will be to place each battle in the context of the overall history of Europe.

Lucid analysis in a compact, focused format. Absolutely brilliant.

    Best narration I’ve seen
Amazing & detailed. I’ve seen so many podcasts that skip over the details to try to keep their episodes short, and I love how Carl goes into all the juicy details. I love how he goes into all of the context for the historical moments he focuses on. On top of all this, he is also a good speaker and a good narrator. One of the best approaches to European history I’ve seen.

    This podcast goes to 11
There is not a more complete history of Europe performed by any human being on this planet than this. Every battle's background is made perfectly clear as Carl includes the previous decades and even centuries of context or build up leading to the conflict. If he did one on North America and another on Asia and N Africa he would more or less own the entire intellectual space that is history podcasts. The only criticism I have, and trust me I'm reaching, is that for the sake of time, he sometimes speaks quickly or goes on without breathing for a while and I have to rewind if I don't understand what he's talking about or if I miss something. 15 sec rewind is very helpful in the car. Bravo Carl Tim

Thanks for the great work and please come back soon!
I cannot thank you enough for the wonderful and comprehensive series. I've never been so sad that there weren't more wars in Europe so you could keep going. Please return soon. I'll listen.

    So informative and good
I have listened to all of this a couple of times— please don’t end after WW1… surely you can back up and find some other key battles to tell us about!

    Poor reading, please drink water
The subject matter is interesting but the production value is quite low. The reading is so monotonous that there should be a warning that those listening while driving might fall asleep. And listening to this podcast with AirPods only amplifies every dry swallow and all the cotton mouth.

    A great place to start
This is an excelent place to start for those who have an interest in European history, and what became Western civilization. Carl does a fantastic job taking you from Marathon through Alexander the Great, Carthage and Constantinople, Waterloo and so many other recognizable names, but with greater depth and insight than I remember being taught. I have learned about many groups of people I’d never heard of, that have a profound effect on the path of history. I appreciate the fact that Carl tries to keep an objective tone and tell as much from both sides of the conflict when possible. His progression through the early stages made his storytelling more comfortable (early mispronunciations), he took the feedback well and quickly became a great narrator. His podcast made me search out others to learn more about some of the places he can only do little more than mention. This is a great thread to weave all the other stories together, helping keep the overall picture clearer as I listen to stories about the Romans, Byzantines, Rus, Slovak, and Germanic peoples. I’m sure that list will continue to grow. I look forward to hearing what else he has to share. All of that being said; atrocities are atrocities, and he makes clear that they unfortunately happened often. That some rulers that came to power were horrible people, plain and simple.

    Excellent
This is brilliant storytelling, framework and narration. Thoroughly enjoying every episode. The best history podcast I have ever heard.
  • The Bop Police
    Hard to listen
The information is very concise. However, the narration is so difficult to follow. It is too monotonous, and flat. It feels like someone is actually reading his dissertation from the paper. Totally robotic, without any sonic dynamics. These historical events deserve the vocal drama. They were very dramatic events after all.

    Brilliant
Brilliant podcast that goes not only into the battles that shaped Europe, but the political and economic factors and great individuals that shaped the continent. Audio quality could be better at times, but I’m only up to the 4th Crusade and wouldn’t be surprised if the quality improved over time. Highly recommend if you like things like ‘Age of Napoleon’

    Just what I needed.
I was looking for more background information on the Wars of German Unification for my latest novel. This podcast was exactly what I needed. Thanks, Carl. Keep up the good work!

    Great History Podcast
This podcast is a great way to get a general survey of European history. By setting the scene and exploring the background of each key battle we get a big picture narrative of how Europe was formed and reformed.

    Great Information
I would love to rate this higher due to the treasure trove of information, but Its hard for me to listen to the narrator, I don't know if its the speed, pitch or recording devices but I have to focus really hard and rewind constantly.

    where's the zest
5 stars for great research , and super interesting topics , but the monotone narration with the mic too loud and close to the mouth needs help.
  • Dances without a clue
Quite enjoying this romp through European History
I usually like a deeper dive into topics, but this is excellent at tying in the inter-connectiveness or European History. Sadly, I have almost caught up with all the eposodes. I thyink that comes from consuming them so ravenously.

    Wonderful
Great podcast brotha! Keep it going and don’t worry about the ads! You put in a lot of time into creating this we can sit through or skip through some ads for you to make some money for the effort!

    Ditch A-cast
This is a great podcast dragged down by ads that will annoy you to death. Get rid of A-cast

Deeply researched and thoughtfully put together
I really like this podcast. It explains European history by focusing on the broad context and lead up to, as well as the aftermath of, important battles. The production quality is not perfect (it’s also not as bad as other reviews would have you believe), but it’s obvious that a lot of research and thought goes into every episode / series, and there’s no advertising or digressions into random subjects. A fine trade off as far as I’m concerned.

Really good podcast explaining how European countries came to be

    One single issue ruins greatness...
This podcast contains an impressive wealth of historical knowledge. Exceptionally researched and factually accurate, it is obvious the narrator has a passion for history and warfare, as each episode’s depth surely requires tireless work to craft. This makes it exponentially more disappointing for such labor to be overshadowed by a single-yet overbearing-problem: mouth sounds. Every swallow of saliva and smacking of lips is recorded in crystal clear definition for your listening pleasure; a keen ear can even discern the last food eaten by the host. If you love history, warfare, or the sounds of passionate make-out sessions after eating peanut butter, then I have the podcast for you!
  • E90Mack
    Love it!
Really high quality, digestible information. There are not many times where it goes into opinions, but when it does I love it, example “it is not fashionable to ascribe changes in History to just one person, but....”.
  • praxis78
    Just discovered!
    I love a well-written and well-researched and well-narrated history podcast.

    Carl crafts a great podcast
I enjoy this series very much. The episodes are well written and thorough. Carl takes time to show the overlap of historical countries, leaders and their interests which shape the course of history. Keep it up Carl!

    Good history podcast
He starts with a strong history of the local politics and major events. I really like it.BUT I freaking hate how I can here the dude smack his mfkin lips before he starts talking again. Please dude. I know you are British but please edit some of that out. Great job though.

    Excellent Podcast
I just want to thank you for all your hard work over the years. I really appreciate all the background information that you provide for us leading up to the actual battles.
  • Grifman1
    Very good podcast
The title is a bit confusing as the description of the actual battles usually takes up only a small portion of each podcast. Most of the time is spent strong up the political and diplomatic context of the battle, along with a description of the kings or generals involved and their motivations. Afterwards we get an overview of the impact of the battle on the historical situation. A very worthy addition to any list of history podcasts.

    Filling in the gaps
This fills in gaps that books skip, answering a lot of questions and making my history studies more connected and therefore more interesting. Is there a way to get it in written format? I am terrible with understanding accents, even for an American. Thank you!
  • SoCalBannon
    So far, good.
I have enjoyed the podcast and so far there have been no egregious propaganda pushed. He seems to be all about historical fact. He obviously cares a great deal about the subjects and it is very well done. The only thing questionable is his promoting of a podcast about the Crusades which is pure anti-Christian, anti-Catholic, anti-Western Civilization and pro-leftist revisionist history full of flat out lies.
  • Mel-rad
    Exceptional!
What a great podcast summarizing historical key battles in Europe while providing key historical facts that make the listener understand the important events in the lead up to the conflicts. I learned a ton from the episodes.

    A history buff’s delight
This is a wonderful journey through the history of Europe and also how that history was touched by outside influences. Like how Eastern European history is included. This podcast makes me look forward to long car trips.

    Concise and Clear
So much more than military maneuvers. Lots of well organized historical background. The presentation is a bit dry but it's so much better than the rambling, over-produced presentation found in so many history podcasts.
