Joe vs Carole

We all have limits. And some people who are pushed beyond those limits will do unspeakable things. From Wondery, "Joe vs. Carole" is the story of a man who has devoted his life to raising and breeding lions, tigers, and other exotic animals at his Oklahoma zoo. He croons ballads, shoots guns, and puts it all on YouTube. But throughout his career, he's made a lot of enemies. And the biggest of all is the owner of a big cat sanctuary in Florida named Carole Baskin. The feud between Joe Exotic and Carole gets messy, vicious, and outrageous -- until both of them are pushed far beyond their limits. Reported and hosted by Rob Moor.

This was waaaaay before Netflix - Wondery did it first
Saff is a trans man - so maybe you should get your facts straight before you comment . Netflix got it wrong - this podcast didn’t.

    This came before Netflix Documentary
This is a fantastic podcast, I listened to it when it first came out. Started writing some reviews for some podcasts, and noticed a lot of one star ratings, and a lot of them were complaining about it copying the Netflix documentary. This came out first people.... The podcast and documentary were both entertaining, and well worth the listen.

Ain’t nobody got time to watch Netflix
Excited to listen to this vs having to spend time that I don’t have to watch on Netflix. Those of us that don’t have the luxury of binge watching, this is amazing!!! Excited to hear what everyone was loving on Netflix.

    Y’all
This podcast came out BEFORE the documentary and actually seems a lot LESS biased to me.

Nice podcast, lot of review info
We already knew all this info from the nations most viral show... no need to repeat info

Not necessary if watched Netflix doc
Told very well. Some things not told in the Netflix doc, A LOT of things in the doc not in this podcast

    I love it!
I was a big fan of the Netflix doc series but I was surprised to enjoy this even more. Not only does it present information as journalistic truth rather than just a story crafted to be dramatic, it also tells the animal rights warriors as the heroes of the story rather than convincing everyone to actually like a man with some serious animal abuse organizations. The Netflix series is really a fun thing to watch, but I think we all need to realize that just because it may have swayed our opinions in a certain way, truth is much more fluid.

    Both are nut jobs
I can away from this with the conclusion that both Joe and Carol are both nut jobs. I don’t believe in a second her early story about running away from her first husband and catching a ride with a guy who had his hands around her neck and marrying him. That is a story in it self. She is not believable. Joe is totally a user and I believe he wanted Carol gone.

I know we’re giving this man the attention he wants but..
I prefer this over Tiger King.

If you watched Netflix special, nothing new here
And please stop giving this animal abuser attention

    Completely Biased
Anyone who knows anything about the tiger king story can immediately see the bias in this podcast. I am second guessing the information presented in the other Wondery podcasts now.

    So good
Listened to this before the “documentary” and this is brilliant. The show on Netflix is unbalanced trash—not a documentary at all.
  • Cubone&NatutrainerLannisterfan
    Enough!!
Can we just stop giving Exotic attention? It’s what he wants!!
  • KiwiHiker
    Excellent
Rob Moore does a great job sifting through all the shady characters to try to give the listener a well rounded story and snapshot of Joe Exotic and the world of exotic animals.
  • clt05
    Biased
I prefer the Netflix miniseries as it seems to tell a more well rounded story. The host of this podcast does not tell the story in an unbiased way. He also makes many statements and presents them as facts. One example was he stated "Carole's first husband was abusive" without giving evidence in any of the episodes to back this claim (such as police reports, etc).

    A More Complete Picture
This was a much more balanced perspective than the Tiger King documentary. Has both interviews and first hand experiences of the journalist that provide greater depth. To all those who are saying that this is biased towards Carole Baskin, that is because the Netflix series is more biased towards Joe. This is a more nuanced and unbiased listen.
  • Wuyawuya
    More balanced view
The podcast has a more balanced view on the people involved. I don’t understand the whole sentiment around Joe. He had a though life but he is also a awful awful person. He mistreated the cats and his employees. The whole underdog narrative that the netflex doc created for him is inaccurate in my opinion. Also this podcast is before the netflex doc, get your fact straight, people. Also Saff is a he if he says so. Mind your own pronouns, people.

Want more tiger king info. Here it is
This is a pretty good podcast. There is some info that want in the Netflix documentary.

Excellent podcast! So much more information on Carol and the murder for hire. Sooooooooo interesting! You won’t regret listening.

    All Hype
The reason I started listening to this podcast was due to all the hype surrounding the Netflix documentary. Everyone was binging & raving about it. I though it would be a true crime story, but it turned out to be more about a narcissistic & flaky exotic animal owner. I have one word for this podcast-BOOOORING !
  • Rosy_9
    Great quick binge!
I love that I received an unbiased opinion from this podcast. Although I enjoyed the documentary, it was too against Carole Baskin. This podcast gave insight to both stories and details that were not shown on the Netflix series. Point is that both Carole and Joe made mistakes and were too obsessed with each other. This podcast definitely hits those points! Highly recommend!
  • Carschmn
    Great podcast
This is a much more balanced and accurate portrayal of the Joe v Carol rivalry than the Netflix series. Very good listen.
  • madsthemadhatter
    Perfect Representation
After watching The Netflix documentary I realize that the information was more for ratings and didn’t show the whole story. This podcast does that, and does not dramatize/make people look better then they are for rating or viewing appeal. Joe Exotic and other big cat exploiters need to be held accountable and not dignified and put on a pedestal by the media. And that is why I love this podcast it is an interesting listen, but is also l factual and does an amazing job of showing big cat exploiters for what they are.

    Carol Baskin Supporter
I wish I would have known this Rob guy was CAROL BASKIN SUPPORTER before I listened to it. Though I’m not a Joe Exotic supporter this guy clearly thinks the world of Carol Baskin.

    Don’t waste your time
Legit a copy and paste of the Netflix documentary

    Carole Baskin
Killed Her husband whacked him can’t convince me that it didn’t happen fed him to tigers they snack in what’s happening? CAROLE BASKIN
  • Bekahboo1290
    Great listen!
Wonderful and unbiased. To the person who gave one star because “Saf is a woman”. You’re factually incorrect and should educate yourself before posting reviews. The Netflix documentary consistently misgendered Saf who is a transgender man as a she. He is a he. So not only is Netflix incorrect, but so are you. This podcast is an excellent companion to the heavily biased and edited documentary on Netflix.
  • kamariamckay
    Violence
Carole baskin killed her husband because she was so angry and she buried him on the property but if theirs no evidence then she fed him to tigers
  • Violet Toes
    Unbiased, nuanced, well researched take
This is an unbiased, well-researched take on the story of Joe Schreibvogel, convicted of fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and animal cruelty, and his abuses of his lovers, staff, business partners, and animals. It also tells the story of how Carole Baskin went from cub petting and breeding to sanctuary and trying to shut down the industry that is abusing and killing big cats and the years long legal battle and feud with Joe. I’m glad I listened to this series before the heavily edited and biased entertainment series on Netflix so I wasn’t led by the nose to think Joe was some innocent folk hero. Also, Baskin didn’t kill her husband. Big cats don’t consume entire carcasses of meat, police didn’t find human remains on the property, there was no meat grinder large enough to grind up a full grown adult human male, and Don had a history of plane crashes. He also had a history of criminal activity. So no, the theory cooked up by her greedy stepchildren and pushed by Joe is nonsense.

I found this to be a great podcast.
Like so many, I found this podcast after being enthralled by the Netflix documentary. I found it to be unbiased which was a pleasant surprise because I think the documentary tried to paint Joe as an unsung hero, or some sort of underdog. As sure as I am that Carole Baskin killed her husband, I am sure that Joe Schreibvogel is exactly where he belongs.
  • Tlawton
    Great unbiased podcast
This podcast came out way before the documentary and I feel it really did a good job telling the story. Sadly the recent bad reviews are mostly just Joe sympathizers who can’t see him as a bad guy.
  • Seth Glasbrenner
    Very biased
Gives a decent amount of information, but feels very biased as if Carole financed the podcast. Would have preferred a more unbiased approach.
  • paul man 12435
    Good
The podcast is a good podcast. I am glad that I ignored most of the bad reviews about this podcast because I think it is good. There is no reason why you should think this is a bad podcast unless you hate Joe exotic.
  • Aprilnina
    Not convinced
Why does David’s voice sound different from his real voice, you couldn’t convince me that was a real recoding for this podcast.
  • FeralMermaid
    Good production
I listened to this long before the Netflix show and found it thoroughly entertaining. I’m also glad I did because I wasn’t conditioned by the Netflix series to tell me what to think. Every layperson who’s not in law enforcement or FBI needs to put their pitchforks down. Watching a show doesn’t give you all the facts any more than listening to a podcast will. If there are truly “two sides to every story”, then something other than the Netflix narrative should be taken into consideration as well. At the end of the day this is entertainment, because NONE of us know the whole story. Just enjoy having something free to listen to.
  • Bombshellbrewnutte
    Glad I ignored negative reviews
I think those who felt it was biased might have already seen the Netflix docuseries. This was written by a guy who was there during the journey, not after the fact, and has some close up knowledge. I liked it! I’m glad I listen to this before seeing the Netflix show, which sounds like it made Carole Baskin the villain

Moor provides more, that’s for sure!
Robert Moor definitely provides more information and I respect that he went deep with the people in interviews, etc. People usually aren’t “crazy” for no reason at all so thank you for the investment in them. I couldn’t help but wonder about other people, too; for example, I can’t help but wonder if Robert Moor would consider continuing interviews with family members like Jeff Lowe’s wife’s family or more with Dillon’s mom.... it would be interesting and humbling for their stories to be exposed. I think everyone is fascinated in our core thoughts wondering just how people end up in situations, especially extreme situations as we have heard in these shows. Thank you for risking A LOT to do this type of journalism ! Also, loved your Justin Long interview.

So many little flaws make it lack credibility.
So many flaws to sart out with Saf is a woman, and you constantly refer her as he. Which under cuts your credibility big time. And if you’re doing it on purpose, says so at least once so people know why. You talk about the Netflix episodes and ask questions that are clearly answered. Like carols wedding photos. They literally show a video of carol explaining it. But the two of you talk about it like it’s new information. If you want to talk about it, great, I’m curious what you have to say. But don’t pretend like youre answering any sort of unanswered question. The list goes on but I’m not going to spend my day listing them. Still an interesting listen though.
  • jiveturkeh
They released the episodes so I changed rating
Was planning on listening to this at work. Found out that they took down all the episodes and put them behind a pay wall. Wondery really thinks their content is good enough to be a subscription service LMAOOOOOO

    Biased...but Good 🤷🏼‍♀️
This is a great series honestly when you purely listen to the podcast. There are some great tid bits of information that you don’t get from the documentary, but it is very biased against Joe and pro Carole. I feel that makes this hard to fully buy into especially in the bonus episode with the Rob Moor.
  • Yopu
    Why remove and re-release??
I downloaded this podcast after watching Tiger King on Netflix as my husband had told me he listened to it about 6 months ago. There is so much that they deleted from these “re-released” episodes. All this is, is a recap of the Netflix series. I was disappointed as my husband told me stories from this podcast that have since been removed.
  • Frankmanstein
    Great example of awful journalism
There is always more than one side to a story, but if you were to listen to Joe Exotic on Wondery, you'd only hear one side. Throughout the series, there's a clear bias in one direction without any benefit of doubt heading in another direction. The framing of this story is awful. No wonder this was years in the making and had to wait until Netflix's series became a hit to try to cannibalize off their success.

    I Want More!
Like the rest of the world, I too am obsessed with this saga...OBSESSED. Perhaps The quarantine is getting to me but I can’t seem to to get enough of it all. Thankfully this podcast provides us with majors details that weren’t provided in the documentary and it’s brilliant. I just wish it had more episodes :(
  • dknaround
If u watched Netflix u have heard this already
The real story is how made up Carols version of events about her entire story are. Everything seems so overdramatized ( men circling the block in cars, her husband always disappeared. He pulls up in a car and lays a gun on the seat. He just wants to talk, they spend the night together but she doesn’t start the affair until the next day). It all sounds like carol basking in a liar who killed her husband. That should be your next story.
  • Skeezy420
    Biased with propaganda
Legit listening to this podcast is like hearing a infomercial for Carol Baskin. Too many ads, too much hearsay with no follow up, and no digging to find info on Carol or Jeff’s behavior that clearly is less than legal itself. I’m pretty certain this was made to sell ads and make a cheap rent podcaster some easy cash.
