The Art of Process with Aimee Mann and Ted Leo

182

The Art of Process with Aimee Mann and Ted Leo is the newest artistic collaboration from legendary singer-songwriters Aimee Mann and Ted Leo. Every other week, Aimee and Ted talk to friends across the creative spectrum to find out how they work. And sure, they're friends with a lot of musicians, but weirdly not as many as you'd expect. So you'll hear from comedians, directors, novelists, show creators - ok, yes, some musicians - writers, producers and more, as they discuss the process of turning an idea into art.

    My favorite podcast
I’m obsessed. They ask the questions I want to know the answers to. I love processes. One million thank yous.

    Ted Remember your kickstarter?
Remember your kickstarter? Remember it has been years and you basically took over 100 grand from working class people who have supported you over the years. Now you’re ignoring them. You owe a lot of people at least an explanation. Stop running from this and fix it or be honest.

A Glimpse Into Famous Creatives' Creative Process
Aimee Mann & Ted Leo is onto something special with this podcast. The conversational style and tone between these two really opens the guests up, revealing the good stuff - not just why that particular person does what they do but also, HOW. It's inspiring and useful. Please grow this show #growtheshow

    Always great!
Ted and Aimee do great interviews and make intriguing explorations into the inner workings of the creative processes of a wide variety of artists. Their own fantastic work never overshadows their quest into what makes their guests tick, and listen in contagious wonder making clear that they are as curious as their listeners. I love their chemistry and humor! I can’t wait for their next episodes!

    Questions
Hello! I don't mean to be dictating what you should and shouldn't ask your guests, but I was wondering if you could include questions about mental constructs you have to put in place to continue putting work out there. In one episode, you all spoke about making your art for an audience of one. I'd be interested to know how each of your guests, if they personally hold to that idea, put up those parameters in their brains when they know they will be needing to put out their art, sell their art or otherwise put it out into the "gallery" of public opinion. I think that is where I failed as an artist, I wasn't able to build those constructs in my mind and maintain them properly to continue to do what I was doing. Thanks for your time!

    Brilliant.
Never fails to get me to see something in a new way or give me something to think about once the podcast is over...

    Something New
There's no shortage of podcasts where creative types (bad phrase, sorry) talk to each other about their "process," but this is the first one I can think of that actually *focuses* on process. It's gotten tiring to listen to, say, a comedian or actor be cagey about choices they've made, or to pretend like they didn't make choices at all, that their work just woke up like that. The idea that "things just happen" is certainly true, and is *one* part of the creative process, but it's probably 95% of what gets discussed in interviews and even in many corners of creative education. Aimee & Ted have a terrific way of drawing out details and specifics from their guests, and obviously it helps that these are two veteran professionals who have no qualms about discussing their own processes and blind spots. I recommend this show for anyone striving to do anything. For real.

Even if the convo’s just about Kranch
I will happily listen to Aimee and Ted about anything because their brains play off each other beautifully. Listened to the Eric White ep twice; it was so full of insights and invisible hamster wheel moments. Will be flipping SWIMS upside down in my head to send myself to sleep from here on out.

High hopes, but not there yet
I love the concept of this podcast, but it is so far very inconsistent in adhering to that golden idea. I’m still listening though, and still have high hopes for it to get there. The latest episode finally talked about process and art, not just weird family stuff and personal issues. Finally! Progress.

    Thank you
You are some of my biggest inspirations. The concept for this show and the way it’s turned out so far are critical. While creativity is innate to the human spirit, too often artists can be facetious about ideas “just coming to them,” and these tasteful, insightful conversations are so honest about how creation is hard work that takes dedication and skill to refine, not just whimsical visions that appear before thin air. Everything about this is wonderful to listen to, thank you.

    Proud to be an artist
Through fascinating interviews, two musicians I have enjoyed and respected since high school — Aimee Mann and Ted Leo, have much to teach on the creative process The most rewarding aspect is that I can see myself in these successful artists and can learn about, and improve, my own creative process A must for all artists, regardless of medium of expression. Love it!

    More of this, please!
This is everything I like in a podcast--smart, legit hosts; great guests with real insights; compelling essential topics. We need more art and more artists today than ever, and Aimee and Ted are leading the charge toward sanity with these witty, probing conversations. Also, I thank them for vindicating my long-held view that the sax on "Baker Street" is an abomination. In sum, I'm a fan, and I hope this podcast continues for a long time. I'll be donating to Max Fun to support the cause!

Amy and Ted are the podcast you didn’t know you needed
A must for creators. Just the opening banter could be its own podcast. Live taping please!

    My only complaint...
My only complaint is that there aren’t more episodes to listen to yet. (And yes, correct, this is not actually a complaint but a recommendation that you give this podcast a listen -recommended if you are artist or are otherwise engaged in a creative project or are engaging in a project creatively)
  • Singlcel
    Happy to have found this
Love your musical partnership and this; and you two can be the Boss of my state; will never stop thinking about that concept. Also, loved the line that the tail does not just wag the dog, it’s all tail now.

    This is an Outrage!
The only thing more outrageous than the idea of Aimee Mann hosting a podcast, is the reality that Aimee Mann has a podcast, and it's GREAT! No disrespect to Ted Leo either. He's great, and I'm sure he knows more than anyone that Mann is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. After listening to the first 3 episodes, it is clear that both Aimee and Ted have a nack for asking just the right questions of their brilliant guests. Seriously, each episode is like busting open a pinata of breathtaking insight into different peoples creative processes. These are really special conversations between extraordinary people, thank you for recording and sharing them.

    My Favorite New Podcast
I love the conversations that Aimee Mann and Ted Leo are having with other artists/creative professionals. As a writer and longtime coach for creatives, it's inspiring and comforting to hear about the craftwork behind a creative project that may appear seemless in its finished form. Aimee and Ted discuss the creative journey with wit, curiosity, and lots of creative heart. Many thanks!

    Love!
Love love LOVE! Thank you for doing this! And p.s. I’m a doctor, not an artist, just a wanna-be, and lover of arts & artists. These discussions and the easy-going relational (& inclusive) approach are important & impactful to me. Every time I listen, I look forward to going home to share & re-listen again with my (musician/mix-engineer) husband in our evening wind-down time. Thank you!

    Great
Four episodes deep and it’s awesome. Two amazing hosts who sound like they’ve been doing podcasts for years. If you like their music and interviews, you’ll be into this show.

Every artist or aspiring artist needs this podcast!
This podcast is wonderful and I’m so happy it exists! It’s insightful, witty, smart, and the guests all add something so unique to the episodes. Learning about each artist’s experiences (both the guest’s and hosts’) and the way they go about their craft has offered so much depth. It’s allowed me to navigate my own craft with much more clarity and a feeling of being way less alone in my own process. I love the natural, down to earth feel of the podcast as a whole, and the way Aimee and Ted have such a great dynamic and energy together. Great discussions about great topics that aren’t usually covered in other interviews one might find elsewhere. Can’t wait for more!!

A must for productive would-be artists
Aimee Mann and Ted Leo have taken a serious and practical look at how to turn inspiration into actual works of art. They pull back the curtain and talk with artist about the steps and additudes and sweat it takes to create songs, comedy, plays, or any work of art. They explode the myth that great work can only come from a mad moment of perfection. Instead, they show the value of drafts, and small steps, that give us mortals the courage to follow through with our ideas. After listening to each episode I'm excited to start working on my own projects.

    LOVE!!!
SO great! I love the unmatchable team of Aimee Mann and Ted Leo, who have such a fun, smart rapport going on that their talented guests are just the icing on the cake. As an artist, I love learning about other people’s creative process (the good, the bad and the ugly). Personally I’ve always found the process itself fascinating. This program does such a beautiful and consistent job of getting the core of something that’s inherently messy - and in such a witty and thought-provoking way. Well done Aimee and Ted! Many more of these PLEASE!!! Thanks - Kelly Burns Portman

    Fantastic show
There is so much wisdom and insight to be found in these interviews. Ted and Aimee have created another great thing.

    I am so glad
To discover Aimee and Ted’s podcast. And so glad that they explain that as much as writing music is channeling inspiration— you still have to have something to hang it on. Hence the process. Episode number 3 with Mr. Wilson was my favorite so far. I hope that some of your future guests are also songwriters. The shorthand between you when you discuss your strategies is truly instructive and interesting.

Love this... entertaining, smart and mind opening
Craft is important and really hard to discuss in an interesting way. These two (and their well curated guests) make it seem super easy. ps. Aimee, I worked on a music video you shot with Katherine Dieckmann in a lake house north of Ithaca, NY. You were super cool and came around to everyone (including me as a PA) and thanked us all and were open to conversation and questions. Super classy.

Who Is This and Why Do I Find Her Words So Educational?
Just listened to a podcast interview with someone I've never heard of who does a show I've never watched, and she and the hosts had such helpful and intelligent things to say about the creative process that I came back here to subscribe. Love the kind of discussion they had--thoughtful, practical, non-en-jargoned.
  • Binicalaf
    Worthwhile listening
Two really smart and thoughtful people talking to other really smart thoughtful people. It's what a pod cast should be. There are way too many out there with people just spouting stuff they have not really thought about or don't know much about. Even an interviewer with little prior knowledge of a subject needs to ask the right questions. I do think there is something to be said for experience and historical context.
  • pipingdude
    Can’t wait!
Giving this “pre-review” 5 stars ... ‘cause it’s gonna be terrific just based on Aimee and Ted putting it together!
