In God We Lust

by Wondery

A luxury hotel pool attendant in Miami meets a married couple. The wife starts flirting with the young man...and pretty soon he is caught up in a love triangle, one that will have far-reaching results. The husband is Jerry Falwell Jr., member of one of the most famous evangelical families in America and president of a Christian university with a strict code of conduct. The affair is part of a pattern of questionable behavior that will threaten the Falwell family dynasty. From Wondery, the makers of The Shrink Next Door and Bunga Bunga, comes IN GOD WE LUST, a six part series about what the tabloids called “the pool boy” scandal. Co-hosted by Brooke Siffrinn and Aricia Skidmore-Williams, the duo brings their humor and distinctive style of their hit series EVEN THE RICH to a reported miniseries for the very first time.

Host hate Republicans and conservative values
It would be so nice if they didn’t have to bring politics in everything. Believe it or not there are Republicans and Conservatives that enjoy to listen to podcasts but just like everything else our feelings or thoughts don’t matter.

    Please give the people more!
Sooo intriguing!! I miss this so much and would love similar stories told by this creator.

    Eh, it was ok
I was interested in this story but didn’t realize how biased and one sided this would be politically. Just tell the story!
  • B3asy
    Your bias is showing
Does anyone like this kind of biased “better than thou” attitude? The story and facts are interesting enough. Not everyone needs their “voice” to be heard

    Too Many Sounds
I wanted to give this 3 stars because like all Wondery productions it has constant sounds while you're trying to listen to the story. I hate that. To me it's the same as if they put two scenes blurred on TV at the same time. However, these 2 ladies do such a fantastic job with storytelling and their voices are the best I've heard on podcasts. So I listen with no earphones while walking the dog to get around the distracting background noises.

    Intrigued
All the Christians who are slamming the hosts for being snarky about this subject matter is the reason I am about to hit play on episode one! If you’ve offended Christians it usually means you’re doing something right. Sorry, not sorry.

    Absolutely Captivating and Well Done
Not sure if this story is more impactful for those of us living in the Bible Belt. But I mean after Jerry got himself into all that trouble during Covid, I feel like anyone can find themselves intrigued by him, his behaviors and Liberty itself. I spent several days lost in this story while cleaning up the house, so it was a perfect journey
  • arfy66213467
    Very opinionated
Try to be a little more balanced. There are lots of us who support conservative Christian ideals and despise Jerry’s actions. Good job alienating half of your listeners.

    Cannot take the hosts!
Egads so chatty in that annoying Vally Girl uptalk way!
  • gert!!!!
    Interesting enough
I find this podcast somewhat entertaining, but wouldn’t it be nice to listen to something these days with no political bias?

    Propaganda
Another example of true journalism/writing with any artistic zeal is gone by and large. There are thousands of stories that may be told with edge of your seat true events to be covered. Yet, again for every 10 podcast/episodes maybe 1 will be unbiased or allow you to make your own analysis. Society treats the masses so offensively that material is presented to us as if we can’t read between the lines or the more common blatant presumptions of what their audience “needs to know for their best”. Even if it is a lighthearted fun presentation leftist can still never let the work just be, it is always about an agenda and quite frankly this is stale.

    Very Entertaining
Really enjoyed hearing about his story and getting to hear from so many different people involved with the case. The editing and music was a little juxapositional to the story - it sounded like I should be on spring break rather than listening to a podcast about a really weird and horrible guy.
  • JefDavis
    Far too political
If they could just tell the story.

Stop the 5* reviews if you haven’t LISTENED a yet!!!
EDIT: i’ve listened to the entire podcast and it gets better and better as it goes; stick with it. The last 3 episodes esp.are so well done. They do tone down giggling and chattering down a bit —but not enough. But I’m willing to forgive it because they do such an excellent job putting these pseudo Christian hypocrites to the public shaming they are due. The rape problem at liberty University is appalling. Good for you ladies for pulling the rock up off of the squirming pit of evil. *********************** I am literally amazed that the bulk of the five star reviews are from people who flat out say they have not heard any of the podcast yet, but that they expect and bet it will be fantastic. Apple should really not allow these absolutely useless reviews. Here’s a real review from someone who actually listened to the first two episodes. It’s very interesting and listenable the subject matter is of course fascinating. It’s well researched. BUT I NEED THE HOSTS TO QUIT INSULTING THE AUDIENCE INTELLIGENCE. Please cut out the scripted asking of questions where the answer I’d obviously already known. And for GOD's SAKE a I beg you to cut the terrible, not remotely funny "jokes" and then the giggling. It is so, so, so bad, CRINGE! I like the hosts. But they need to just be themselves and quit reading the obviously scripted nonsense chatter. It truly does insult the audiences intelligence. I beg you to cut it out of the rest of the episodes.
  • Lct1900
Seems interesting. Can't get passed the hosts.
The giggling and unfunny commentary was exhausting. I have LOVED every Wondery podcast until this one. The women's voices were too much alike and frankly, they chattered too much. Oh well. There are so many more to listen to...

    Clueless online student
I stumbled upon this & as an online student of liberty I couldn’t help but laugh at so much of this. It was a good story & I enjoyed hearing the scandals my school covered so well.

Theses two are doing the lord’s work by putting those hypocrites on blast!

    Well done
This is an excellent expose of an example of the common heresy and seditious nature of American evangelicals.

story i didn’t know i needed to hear
A sick and messed up story but well scripted and told! I can listen to these two forever. I feel like the research was well done and spared no detail. I have 2 family members who attended Liberty and i had NO idea about it’s history and recent stories. Binged this in 2 days

    So entertaining
as well as informative! Good job! For those that are offended …. I’m sure there’s a podcast for you that hides the ugly parts of religion. Seek & you shall find!

    VERY accurate depiction
Can't understand the reviews that are like "Christians are depicted soooo badly." Like yeah because they deserve it for enabling things like Liberty University. This is a great podcast. Really hard to listen to because of the injustice done to the students and victims of the Liberty empire. Highly recommend this podcast but only if you feel you can handle something heavy.
  • leslie_will
    Gross
If you're searching for a podcast that is hosted by bigots, look no further. Their pathetic attempts at landing immature and asinine jokes repeatedly fail as they giggle and schlep their way through the story. I couldn't finish. Don't waste your time.
  • Secchieta
    Great job, ladies!
Thanks for this entertaining peek into the dumpster fire that is the Falwell Family Legacy. But also, into the homophobic and misogynist institution that is Liberty University. Some folks are salty about the hosts being “sarcastic” and disrespectful about Christians, but as a Christian myself, I disagree and think that perspective very much misses the point of this podcast by a mile. Liberty University, its founders and leadership, and administration are worthy of ridicule, but also dangerous and worth the deeper dive into the hypocrisy, homophobia, misogyny, and sexism that are apparently an open “secret” on campus. Great job, ladies, and honestly, I think y’all have enough material to do a whole other podcast just on how extremely problematic Liberty U is.
  • lolamaew
    Horribly disturbing
    The title is offensive enough!

    Very thorough report on Liberty
This podcast series was very well researched and not the hit job some reviewers want you to think. They interview student leaders from Liberty during the time of the scandal, use recordings of conversations to support some accusations, and keep to the facts of the situation. This is a well done synopsis of divisive scandal that doesn’t embellish the truth. Sometimes the truth is hard to hear.

    Good series
Very informative. It can be a little chatty, but overall I enjoyed it.
  • BayouNeCol
    Captivating
Love ❤️ it! The hosts did an excellent job!
  • independentevangelical
Interesting story, but attitude towards Christians needs a check.
Good coverage of the story and it is a shame that it happened, but as we’ve seen over the last couple of years, all Christians are portrayed as stupid and radical. We are not all far right extremists…maybe you should’ve done a little more research on the divide that is present in the evangelical community. I speak a lot to the episode with the Brown student who went undercover. We all have to have respect for things we don’t understand…we can’t just make fun of it. He was more empathetic, but the snickering and comments on the hosts’ parts were really saddening. There are those of us who truly believe that Christ will make your life better and give you a hope and a future. Just maybe be a little less entertaining and more empathetic when it comes to subjects like this.

    My favorite podcast
The humor makes this podcast the BEST. Don’t listen to haters that say it takes away from the story—if you’re trying to take everything waaaaay too seriously, then this isn’t the podcast for you. I’ve been listening since the beginning, every show you girls do, and I’m endlessly entertained. Cheers!

Aricia & Brooke do it again!
Another fantastic series with two fantastic hosts. Love it. Listen right away!
  • PNWTreeLover
They are biased in telling the story
I appreciated the story and details but the hosts get a thumbs down for their snarky comments. I think they could have done a better job telling the story without being so opinionated (one-sided views and jokes), so to me that’s poor story telling and journalism. It’s obvious they don’t appreciate people with different views then them.
  • furbyqueen
    Skip the small talk!
Great story, and it drew me in right away. The hosts just aren’t to my liking. I don’t mind y’all getting a little political (I’m very left wing but I listen to all different podcasts). It’s the immature laughing and fifth grade jokes that just make the show less impactful.
  • Shannabelle
    Thoroughly enjoyed!
This too one of those “so wild I can’t believe it’s actually true” stories. It’s entertaining, but also well-researched and deep, exploring the impact of how leadership’s (very juicy and contradictory) behavior affected the entire school’s culture and personal lives of its students. I didn’t find the commentary to be annoying - it’s actually pretty light and fairly neutral politically, considering it’s about a college that was maybe too involved in politics. I get a feeling the one-star reviews are from folks defensive about religion or conservative views, conflate the two, and aren’t willing to think critically about belief systems. If you’re open-minded and interested in these kind of discussions, you’ll enjoy it.

    An entertaining well-told tale
Thanks for sharing all these nuggets with humor and truth.

Nice hosts but a little too woke
I like these two, however it would serve them better if they left politics out of it. Being unbiased would make your podcasts better. Couldn’t keep going on this one.
  • Trothboy
    Awful presentation
Couldn't even finish the first episode. Could have been a good podcast, except for the stupid badinage between the two hosts. Trying to be cute doesn't work. Get new hosts.
  • uehdjbs
    Good story, bad commentary
Good story to be told, but the hosts clearly have a biased. I wanted to stop listening constantly because of their childish stupid (for a lack of better words) comments.
  • harmbruster
    Incredible!
As a Catholic-turned-atheist, there is nothing I love more than a religious scandal!! Both ladies are great podcasters and hilarious. The story is wild and I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of it beforehand. 10 stars!
  • hrdtruthsmatter
If you think someone who is different than you are is a “libtard” this isn’t for you
I’m blown away by the 1 star reviews…it goes to show how what I was raised with as Christianity (anti-science, misogyny, hypocrisy and the view that any idea that challenges your firmly held views isn’t only different but “sinful”) still plagues the modern day evangelical and conservative movements. This is in direct conflict with what I was also taught about a religion of love, grace, kindness, gentleness, justice and sexual purity. I was molested as a kid and assaulted as a young man by church people and never listened to. To think that they accuse “woke” culture of being closed minded is so ironic. I came out at 39 yo after being encouraged by the pastor of the mega-church I’d served at for over 15 years to do so. I was then basically told not to come back. When going to Christian school growing up there were multiple times male teachers or pastors had sexual interactions with female students. The males were slapped on the wrist but kept their positions, the underage females were permanently suspended for “tempting” the men. There is a gross rot a the base of fundamentalism that hides the hatred, racism, bigotry, homophobia and other anti-Christ like values. It starts with the leadership and politics of the far right and has bled into the mainstream. I would’ve given up on the church a long time ago but I believe that there is much good in the teachings of Christ and that there is always hope if people are willing to examine their hearts. If you don’t like the voice or banter of the hosts that’s fine but to claim that this is about Trump or a hit piece on Christianity proves you didn’t listen to the whole thing. The guy who did the expose in the 7th episode was incredibly gracious and kind about an experience that most would mock. Having had to go on evangelism missions myself I can’t imagine the discomfort he must have felt…and I think he did a good job of pointing out how many good Christian people are out there. My family are still extremely conservative Pentecostals but they love and accept my husband and I and others that are different than them bc they truly live out their beliefs and show the love of Christ in all their actions. They were appalled by the last administration and the exploits of Falwell and liberty. I wish there were more people like them out there. Good job ladies at keeping a very hard topic light and easy to listen to for someone who is still dealing with the trauma of sexual assault in the church and gangster fundamentalism.

    Snarky wokeness
These two would be a lot better if they left their political beliefs out of it. Tell the story not your opinion. I’d say bottom echelon of the wondery cast.

    Entertaining story
Really good story, however the hosts of it sound like 2 little giggling school girls (very annoying) and they really should leave their obvious political views out of the story I will give them this though - the story was very well researched & pretty entertaining

    Low Ratings from Haters
This was out of the box journalism. It was a fun approach to such a heavy topic of sexual assault and religious trauma. It seems like most of the low ratings are coming from the same person or someone sent this to everyone at their church to give it low ratings. The point of “Even the Rich” is tell stories in a fun and “gossipy” way. Why would you listen to this and decide to leave horrible reviews? You clearly liked it enough to listen to it all the way through. Wondery, thank you for bringing this story to the outside world. Without this I wouldn’t know of the horrible conditions this school was taught under. Keep amplifying the voice of those that were victims of Liberty.
