Sam Pancake Presents the Monday Afternoon Movie

97

Actor and comedian Sam Pancake sits down with friends famous and funny to discuss the surreal, silly and nonetheless star-studded made-for-TV movies of the 1970s. It's a loving look at baffling not-quite-feature-length flicks that often aren't on DVD and have largely been lost to time.

    A delight
Sam is the most charming host with the best non-sequiturs, gossip, and tales from his past. I loved the recent ep with Sarah Marshall, but I’ve re-listened to them all!

    Answer to my dreams…
This is the podcast I’ve been waiting for. As a mid-fifty something I have a fondness for several of these movies. Sam is hilarious, and I wish I could sit and reminisce about these movies with him 😊

    Refreshing spritz of nostalgia!
Sam Pancake knows his stuff kids! My favorite niche of pop culture is the nexus of horror films and made for TV movies of the 70s.This show hits the sweet spot. I have my favorite phlems of this period that in enjoyed when I was but a sprout, ok a teen if we’re getting technical. Yes I am a “golden ager”- and I still love rewatching these things as comfort food from the past. Sam himself and his co-commentators inject the zingers into the narratives and manage to make these well worn tales refreshed once more. The stars of the mid-century are brought to life by Sam’s impersonations that always make me chuckle. He does a great Bette!(Davis that is)…Sam, I have only one wish- that you cover the noticeably absent TV movie especial : Sybil!!! I know ,I know Sam you only got ABC in the wilds of West Virginny-and Sybil was on CBS but…it WAS a TV movie of the 70s so… And I cant wait to hear your impersonations of everyone in it! 5 Stahss!

    Truly one of my favorites
I discovered this from Sam's DYNAR episode, i rushed to listen after i heard it because he talked about two of my favorite tv movies from the 70's! Sam is amazing and i love all the guests. I adore how much he knows and talks about old Hollywood. I love the new stuff he's covering also! I would listen to him talk about any movie or show to be honest. It's just fun and a bit of comfort food.

Thank you for validating my childhood and finally telling me how all these movies ended, since my bedtime interfered and my mom couldn’t be bothered to remember!

I absolutely adore Sam Pancake! I discovered him on an episode of DYNAR- great episode by the way, please check it out. I’ve been hooked on the Pancake and this iconic podcast ever since! The movies are all fun and the podcast recap is the cherry on the top. Sam just makes this gentle listener SO HAPPY. And boy, do we all need stuff that makes us happy during these uncertain times! ❤️
  • Guitarlily
    This podcast is pure genius.
This podcast is absolutely the best and Sam is amazing. But the episode with Jackie Beat? I had the honor of playing a pride event with Jackie many years ago. What a great surprise to hear her in this context! The Ants episode with Sam and Jackie is pure brilliance. Can she be a regular guest, please?
  • Annnnnnnnaaaaaaaa
    I haven’t gotten bored
Which is good, because when I get bored the game. is. over. Absolutely love this show. I could listen to Sam Pancake all day. It’s like sitting in a living room on a rainy day, while someone smokes menthols in the next room.

    My love is pure
Sam is amazing, and the discussion is priceless. The podcast makes me laugh out loud and helps me not be cranky while doing housework, which is really saying something.

    Sam is a treasure
This podcast is so much fun! The host, Sam, is a treasure, the guests are so funny, & the movies are pure 70s made for TV magic! I would argue tho, the real MVP here is Guerdon Trueblood. If you know, you know. 💘
  • thekgs67
    Just 💕
This podcast is so entertaining! First, I love Sam’s voice with perfect emphasis on all the right things. It seems Sam’s knows everyone in Hollywood, and he has such fabulous guests, which means you get some fun inside scoop. I’m about the same age as Sam (I think), and this podcast triggers memories of watching TV movies I should not have as a child. My only complaint is that all I want to do is listen and get caught up (just finished S1), and it’s affecting my productivity in other areas of my life.
  • Shanejm
    I love this podcast!!!
This is one of my favorite podcasts! The subject matter is one of my favorites and this podcast brings back so many memories of my childhood. But the entire podcast comes down to Sam Pancake himself. Sam is funny, delightful, charming, knowledgeable and sometimes a bit devilish which makes this podcast worth listening to! If you love old TV horror/adventure b-style movies this is the podcast for you!!! You will not regret listening! Thank you Sam for your hard work on this truly awesome podcast!
  • Cathy5902
    A Must. Yes.
Do yourself a real big favor and listen.
  • dinah77
    I love Mr Pancake
This is such a fun podcast! I’m just young enough to have missed the original airings of these movies but I remember seeing quite a few in reruns. Sam’s sparkling wit and fantastic humor make this worth a listen even if you haven’t seen the movies
  • Rottnkids2
Terrific Podcast about Terrifically Horrible Movies
I love this podcast! The movies are full of the actors I grew up watching, and the quality reminds me of the B movies that Superhost in Cleveland, OH used to show every Saturday! Sam has wonderful info to share, and makes me laugh every episode. I still have some older episodes to listen to, and I’m parsing them out slowly so I don’t run out too soon! Thanks, Sam!
  • asf ftw
    Hilarious
I don’t even watch these movies but I could listen to Sam pancake talk about them all day long and laugh the whole time. I am definitely a fancake
  • Gherrriey
    Infectious Joy
Having been a fan of Sam Pancake for a while, I was so happy to start in on this podcast where he discusses made-for-TV horror movies with friends and adorably geeks out over the overwrought acting and dialogue or the deliciously non-sensical plotting. It’s not ironic enjoyment, it’s sincere affection with appropriate amounts of shade sprinkled where necessary. After hearing the love Pancake and his guests have for these movies, you’ll be scrambling through YouTube to join in on the good time.
  • Susan Mockingbird
    So much fun!
My husband and I are children of the 70’s and like Sam, were sent to bed and missed the end of so many movies of the week, so the show’s concept immediately hooked us. It’s been so much fun to revisit some old favorite boogeymen during the first season. We are so glad to see Sam and friends back for more. Sam is hilarious - sassy, quick witted and always a gracious host. His detail recall and wide knowledge of the era are remarkable. This show is a total mood lifter and always a treat.
  • Grace Blanchard
Like hanging out with smart, funny friends
I was born in 1960 and was a big fan of these TV horror movies. Reminiscing about them with a funny guy like Sam is a pleasure. My husband and I laughed out loud more than once during the Trilogy of Terror episode. Well done!
  • Avidreeder
Should be required for baby boomers!
Omg soooo funny. As a teen in the 70s I have seen all these movies! Thanks dynar for introducing me to Sam Pancake!
  • Elvira Glass
    A perfect break
I’m so glad there’s a new season! This podcast is such a welcome break from everything going on in the world right now. It’s light and funny, perfect for a subway commute or while working. I’ve really enjoyed watching the movies after listening (particularly the Barbara Stanwyck ones), but now I’m trying to watch first- guessing what hilarious, awkward, and creepy moments Sam and his guests will lovingly send-up.
  • SamThunder
    Sam Pancake is my favorite
I could listen to Sam talk about movies I’ve never seen all day. His guests are charming and I love his stories about working in Hollywood. Nobody is as clever or as classy or as funny as Sam Pancake.
  • Bhaird1
    Hoping for more
This is a delightful movie review podcast that offers something beyond dudes cracking wise, which only a few can do well. Worth listening to, especially if you grew up with or have a fondness for horror movies and made for TV movies.
  • Andybrewster
    Helter Skelter!
Love this podcast. Episode suggestion...the 1976 Helter Skelter TV movie. It’s got everything, and was a Lorimar Production for CBS. Doesn’t get more 70s than that.
  • Jcfriel
    Excellent Podcast
I've listened to every episode at least three times -- that's how much I love this podcast! Sam Pancake is not only hilarious and astute, as are his guests, but he also does a great job of making these movies entertaining even if the listener has never seen them. I was so intrigued by Sam's and Alec Mapa's take on "Haunts of the Very Rich" that I watched it myself and of course they got it exactly right. I can't say enough about this podcast and how much I love it. Looking forward to Season 3!!
  • Shanna Slowjamz
Gay latchkey kid of a certain age HEAVEN
Sam Pancake and his guests capture the exact feeling of sitting on itchy shag carpet in the den watching these movies. They revere these very special performances with love and perfect humor and all in a precise mid-atlantic accent.
  • Jennifer Terry
Sam Pancake is what I didn’t know my life was missing!
I grew up in the 70’s and have these vague have remembered snippets of these old TV horror movies that I have been asking other people forever about and beginning to feel like maybe I was just crazy. When Sam appeared on a recent episode of “Do You Need A Ride?”with Karen Kilgariff and Chris Fairbanks and described this podcast of his, I nearly wept with joy at the concept. I have been going through a fairly stressful time lately, and I cannot describe to you what a welcome escape it has been to start at the beginning and binge listen through all of the Monday afternoon movie podcast. I hope and pray that he continues with the series, because it and he are a goddamed delight that I now feel I can’t live without!
  • dani_ssdgm
    What a delight!
This is the kind of fun, lighthearted content I look for when I need a break from all the negative BS in the world. I could listen to Sam and his friends talk about old made-for-TV movies all day long. It’s like a conversation with my best friend, but with more obscure ‘70s references. Don’t stop making this pod, and please have Karen Kilgariff on as a guest soon!
