Carol Costello Presents: Blind Rage

In Season Two of her true crime series, The God Hook, journalist Carol Costello investigates the complex case of the Ohio Craigslist Killings—and in doing so, unearths the untold story of the crimes that preceded the murders—and the victims who’ve never received justice. Richard Beasley was convicted of murdering three men and attempting to kill a fourth in the fall of 2011, but before that heinous spree, authorities were building a human trafficking case against him. Now, working with the case's prosecutor, a county sheriff, and many closely involved sources, Carol examines previously unknown details of Beasley’s alleged crimes, and how he used the God Hook to lure his victims and bend them to his will.In Season One of this podcast, Blind Rage, journalist Carol Costello revisits the first big assignment she covered as a 22-year-old, novice reporter: Phyllis Cottles’ brutal attack. Psychologists call them “Triumphant Survivors,” but Phyllis Cottle was more than a survivor, she used this crime to better herself and the world around her. Support our show by becoming a premium member! https://evergreenpodcasts.supportingcast.fm

    Stopped after 1 minute
It was immediately all about the hostess, which is a bad sign. Then there was a comment about it being a “man’s world” so I moved in.

    Carol Costello Strikes Again
Already intrigued by where this story is headed. Can’t wait to see what they’ve uncovered.

    Very Good
I’m from Akron and remember this crime well. Ms. Costello did a nice job. I would like more access to the actual police, investigative, and prosecutorial reports/records and research used to produce this podcast. (your web link posts more about Ms. Costello than the crime.) Whatever happened to Ms. Cottle’s mother??

    Resilient Survivor
This story goes deep. It is well told and organized. There is a slight nod of racism, but unintentional, I believe. The survivor is strong. She makes this story so remarkable, What a beautiful human being. So much to learn from Phyllis, about life, death, and taking everything in between in stride and with grace. The ads were a bit much, but just skip through them. Also, the episodes are micro episodes at 20 min each but all episodes are available now so that wasn’t an issue for me.

Lost me at the jungle comment.
I know what Reagan meant? Wow.

Interesting Story. Could have been 2 episodes
20 minute segments are tedious. Too much non- story content including ads. All sorts of technical glitches like breath pop from microphones.

    Too short
    20. Minutes with advertisements included!? Yuck.

    Disappointed
Love true crime and finding new and interesting podcasts. I believe this is the first one where I felt the host was intent on revealing her racism.

    Poor Audio
The story on the podcast was amazing to hear. My only complaint is that the audio of original recordings was so poor that I found listening jarring at times. The recordings gave credibility to the story, so I understand why they used them. It was great to see that Carol Costello made the podcast. I loved starting my day with her on CNN. She presented a kind, friendly manner on and is my all-time favorite CNN anchor.

    Mesmerizing Story
I could not wait until the next episode. Once you start you cannot wait for the next episode. What a great story of a very brave woman. You'll be amazed.

Blind is the right word for this podcast
The host tries hard to drill a narrative which involves negative generalizations of folks she disagrees with… and they are the prejudiced ones?
  • Shaggy3001
    Author is racist
Skip this one unless you love racism

    Interesting story, bad delivery
Story is very interesting, but the reporting was just meh. And some episodes are 20 minutes. If it’s a weekly series, I want 30+ minutes an episode. I can’t imagine waiting a week for 20 minutes. Thankfully, I found this when all episodes were available.

    Great reporting/Aweome/Story Teller
Phyllis’s story is crazy! Your telling this story is so well done. You are detailed, empathetic, angry for the victim and there is a sense that this resonated with you. I am caught up on my other shows and came across the is one. I’m so glad I did. I am an Ohio girl and this story put me right there with Phyllis. Thank you for your amazing work!

    Terrible reporting
The story could have been more interesting if it was a different reporter

    This is awesome
Incredible story, extremely well done. Bring on your next project, Carol!

    Recounted with empathy and grace
I came across this podcast through an interview on One-to-One with John DeDakis. When the word “tragedy” isn’t big enough. Carol Costello, revisiting a gruesome assault she’d covered as a 22-year-old reporter, reintroduces us to Phyllis Cottle’s story almost 40 years later. Handled so skillfully in the telling, it gave me just enough time to breathe between episodes and grieve at the unlimited depths of our oddly human depravity. Costello gently and respectfully explores an impossibly difficult tale through the recollections and sentiments of many of those forever affected, including Phyllis—and Costello herself. Societal mirrors, like this, are the only way to know who we are, and who, with vigilance and care, we can be.

    Gave Me Chills--and that's indeed a plural
Whoa…what a story. Goodness sake, to relive this as if it is happening before us is a moving experience. Carol Costello handles all this with deftness—she has an astounding set of details and pieces the crime and its aftermaths together with care and with a solid narrative structure. Binge material! And, as others have noticed, she gets right to the point. _Lots_ to unpack here. And to think that it indeed really all happened. Wow.

    Thanks
Couldn’t have been any better written or told! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! I’m so sorry that this victim and other victims suffer through insane brutality. We MUST keep the criminals in jail and stop letting them victimize others again and again. Thank you Carol Costello for keeping Phyllis’ story alive.

This podcast is amazing and awesome. You did a great job telling us about this story. Carol Castello is amazing.

Good story, but too many dramatic Swooshes
The whooshing noise added for dramatic effect between interviews and varied moments is way over used and incredibly distracting. Less is more. Otherwise a well done podcast. But seriously, less drama swooshes, it detracts from the story telling.

    Love this podcast!
Carol Costello has a great voice to listen too. She explains things in detail but does not draw things out forever! Wonderful podcast! Great for true crime junkies. Can't wait for more 😃
