5 photographers (Brent Bergherm, Jeff Harmon, Connor Hibbs, Erica Kay, Brian McGuckin) take turns covering listener questions, photography news, and the famous photography “doodads” of the week with each round table discussion episode. This is the podcast for enthusiast and professional photography nerds who want to level up and master their photography–without the fluff of a “talk show.” The team has a special skill for covering advanced level photography techniques in a way that less experienced photographers can understand. They don’t talk down to newer photographers yet provide tips that help advanced photographers. Come join us as we all work to master our photography together!

Excellent Depth of Topics; Great for Photographers at all Levels
Though positioned as a beginner/intermediate photography podcast, Jeff, Brent and the crew do a really great job of going deep into the topic of the week, especially from the technical side of things. Though not all episodes will be relevant to every listener depending on the kind of photography you do, I always find that I learn something in each one, sometimes many, many things. The conversation is informative and entertaining and the hosts humble, knowledge and accessible. Hats off to everyone involved; I really can’t recommend it enough.

    Great podcast.
The podcast is entertaining and educational for photographers of all levels. You can tell Jeff has a great passion for photography and improvement. Good work.

    Indispensable discussion about photography
Enjoyable but it’s not a background podcast you have to listen.

    Not very concise
There is information to be had, but there is a lot of rambling. The podcast typically gives about 5 minutes of information in about an hour of talking. Great if you want to spend time as the hosts are enjoyable, but not if you are looking for concise information

    So much distraction
Did your sidekick forgot that you recorded the show? So much noise coming from him, from heavy sighs( lots of those ) to pans and pods crashing a few of those Sometimes overtaking your voice. There is a button called mute. Well a least on my computer Wow

    Educational and Informative
I enjoy the content and informative as a Hobbyist photographer I find myself putting the things I listened on this podcast and applying them when I am out shooting photos. Really enjoy listen and the content wants to make you listen to more.

    Educational and Entertaining
Expert photography instruction that is down to earth and realistic. All levels are welcome to learn. Host is interesting and has a great, fun personality. Hard to find other podcasts for photography that are this positive and encouraging.

    Please get to the subject
I never leave negative reviews because I know we are all out here hustling hard doing what we love! But I just discovered this podcast and was excited to learn something new...I’m on the “9 tips for beginner photographers” and I am 9 minutes in and they still haven’t mentioned any tips, just doing housekeeping. Producers/hosts, I’m sure you have awesome content but I don’t have time to wait around and hunt for it. Please provide content within 1-2 mins and I will be a loyal listener!

    Love This Podcast!
I have a few podcasts I listen to regularly and this one is right at the top of my list! I love the content that is discussed, the guests have been fantastic and I have learned so much over time. I can really relate to Jeff because I am also a hobbyist photographer, doing jobs here and there for pay but primarily it’s my hobby. I just felt that I could relate to him through his personal photography journey. The hosts on this podcast are so professional, yet relatable. I would love to meet them someday at one of their events!

    Great Information
I’m a new listener and this is a new favorite podcast for me. The Best of 2019 was a great episode and I’m looking forward to checking them out.

Awesome Person - to - Person Info
Jeff has provided me with in-depth information to key questions I needed help with. He answered on Facebook and in his podcast. I am awed by & grateful for his quick & direct support. The Master Photography members have also been terrific. Thanks Jeff & fellow MPers!

    Always selling stuff
The guys/gals seem nice enough, but this podcast is basically a nonstop commercial for products and services.

    Very informative
I always enjoy this podcast. The last one about Lightroom and what hardware a computer needs to run it was excellent! Thanks for the great podcast and all of the information you share.

    So Happy Master Photography Exists
Hi. I’m a new listener and love Master Photography. I have listened to a couple episodes and find it useful, insightful, informative, period! I don’t talk photography details, accessories to my friends so this is a great way to stay informed and up to date. Thank you!

Too much of the host talking
I tried to listen to 2 episodes and found both to be intolerable. Not because of the subject matter, but because of the host. He talks too much about things he knows little of instead of actually asking probing and insightful questions of his guests with insightful, poignant dialogue. He basically drones on and on. The ‘Quadrangle’ episode was especially brutal. I will not listen to another of these.

    Most helpful I have found!
I found this podcast about two months go and eventually joined the Facebook group. I posted about needing guidance and the Facebook group was super helpful. They don't seem to tolerate negative people which is a breath of fresh air from other groups. However, the moderators took it one step further and recorded a headshot tips podcast based on my question. This was amazing because, while I don't imagine they do it for everyone, the fact that they picked my question and broke it all down was so very helpful for a soemone trying to do their best (as we all are). I love this combo of podcast and FB group for follow up and discussion, or vice versa.

    Great podcast
I thought I was already listening to some of the best podcast but then I found this one. Great job I love this show.

Hello Mastery photography crew! I’m a photography student and I’ve been listening to your podcast for a about 4 days non stop, you give a bunch of crap information. Also, I LOVE LOVE LOVE “DooDads of the week”!! What happened to episode 162?

    Great Podcast!
Jeff Harmon and the others put together a great podcast and are a pleasure to listen to. These guys are funny, insightful and a LOT of information is given to their listeners.

    Awesome For Begginers
I just recently started down the long road of photography and was searching for any Information I could find. I downloaded numerous podcasts and have slowly began to cut out the podcasts that didn’t really call to me, overwhelmed me, or just seemed one sided towards a certain type of equipment, style, or the hosts just seemed full of themselves. This podcast has withstood the test of time with me. The hosts are easy to listen to, and they constantly have great topics. I’ve seen different reviews on how they are one sided toward a certain brand and, like they state constantly, they have their preferences but they hammer home to use what works best for you and will give honest feedback and recommendations. This has been great for me in expanding my knowledge and overall “toolbox” as a photographer. I’d recommend this for anyone.

    Warning
If you’re a Nikon shooter be fully prepared for these guys to continually trash your equipment. It is to the point that even when they devote an episode to Nikon equipment they spend their time giggling and trashing it. I’ve given this podcast three months of my time. No more.

    Often good, but sometimes painful
Please Jim, get over yourself. “Big Announcement” episode is good example of how to talk about nothing (especially nothing about photography) for too long. Other episodes exhibit the same problem to a lesser degree. Maybe things will improve now that Jim is stepping back.

    Much Smug!
You'll get some good info from this podcast, if you can last through the smug/self-congratulatory comments from (most) of the hosts. I find Jeff Harmon (sp?) to be the most likeable of the hosts and his info is presented in a clear way. But when there are multiple hosts in a single show it becomes a game of one-upmanship (a recent show about beginning flash photography was almost unlistenable as each tried to prove they knew more than the others). Bottom line, unfortunately, is most of these people do not come across as likeable. Sorry.

One of the best photography podcasts
Lots of great information on a wide range of subjects. I like the Tripod segments best. Kinda bummed that Nick Page isn’t still around.
  • Shepherd517
The host need to learn some manners
The host (Gym Harmer?) interrupts the guests very VERY often. For example, in person 229, the guest hardly could finish any complete sentences throughout the entire podcast. In addition, most of the times the host interrupted the guest to make an absolutely unnecessary, sometimes naive, point. The worst, even I, as an audience, can sense that the guest was annoyed by the host, but the host just kept going on.
  • Dkonieczko
Not as good as it once was
They made changes to the network and the quality of the podcasts are not what they were. There were a variety of podcasts now not so much your best bet is listen to the podcast prior to June 2017 you will learn a lot more than what you get today. I would love it if they start producing better content and update show notes it seems like Jim just uploads to upload and not worry about the content. There is only so much I want to hear about Lightroom cc in photo taco. We want good quality shows.

    Been growing with you
I like that even when the photog podcasters geek-out when talking about gear or techniques, they still break it down for some of us unfamiliar with the terms.
  • Mad Tuna122
    Like the variety of topics
I've learned so much from IP, they have a good balance of learning topics from technical to creative and cover some gear news too. One of the best out there for variety.
  • LCH5432
    Great Podcast
    Good content !!!
  • Rathvon
    Great show
This is a good podcast. They can get a bit chatty on gear, rather then technique. However, you usually learn something new with each podcast.

    Fantastic
I really enjoy the wide variety of topics, the doodads of the week have introduced me to products and tips that I hadn't considered yet, I also enjoy the banter between speakers and I have learned an enormous amount since I started listening to Jim years ago. I've been remiss in giving this review! Thank you Improve Photography, y'all are awesome!

    Excellent
I recently discovered this podcast. It's provided me useful information. Very listenable and avoids trying to be cute or funny. Their website is good too! Keep up quality show guys.

    Outstanding!!!
This podcast, and the other photography podcasts in their network are phenomenal!!! Some of the hosts are professional phtogs, others are hobbyists. There is valuable information for ANYONE interested in photography, at any level! I started from the very beginning episode, and listened to the current one, and I don't think I fast-forwarded one single time! Give it a try, you won't regret it!
  • Nater81
    Outstanding Podcast!
I've learned so much from this podcast and the related photography podcasts in the IP podcast family. I just got into the DSLR world so this podcast offers great advice and it makes my commute go quick!
  • Brockswell
    Infomercial
I've been listening a LONG time, and it seems that with every episode there is a plug to your own products; premium subscriptions, workshops, trips, etc). I get that, but the last episode, was such a blatant infomercial it was cringe worthy. Each story had the same format. Start with the 3 things that changed your photography, tell a story, then tell that improve photography has a similar product or service available which would benefit you. Repeat. Bad, bad, bad episode.

    Great show
These guys (and gals) are great. They are always finding new ways to keep the show interesting and truely want to make your photography better. Whether you are starting out with your first DSLR or you're a full time photographer, you will learn something and be entertained along the way.

    Fun and informative
These guys have great info and it's fun to listen to, Especially when they loose a camera in a lake or a waterfall. I shoot a lot of weddings and I try not to drop a camera or lens. Pricey! Great podcast and I'm learning all the time.

    Great show with relavent content
The entire family of IP podcasts are great. The people are knowledgeable and break it down into simple terms. Check out all their podcasts.

Most Bestest Informationally Helpful Podcast EVER!
Hey Jim Harmer, I've been catching up on your episodes, and thought I should send a shout out to you because you sound a little down. I've been listening to you for a little over a year - in my car - on my way to work and while driving long distance. Apparently there are a lot of people who can express their distaste for something and not enough who share their appreciation. So how about this. After listening to you guys and taking your advice, learning how to use my equipment FROM YOU, learning my settings FROM YOU, learning light FROM YOU... And I don't know how you did it, but I learned composition and dare I say... focus stacking FROM YOU... I am finally learning exactly how much you have taught me... from the speakers in my car. Because I won the FIRST print competition I submitted to ever - last week. My photo won the Kodak Gallery award for Minnesota and the MNPPA Ellertson award for best print of the show. So I thought you should know that you REALLY ARE making a difference in the learning community. There are probably thousands of listeners who have had a similar experience as I have with your show, but maybe they're either too busy or too shy to tell you. Well, I'm telling you. I love your show, I love your way of explaining things, I love the way you can describe photographic visual technical jargon and even software procedures in terms that I can understand. In fact, I understand so well now, that I can carry on a technical conversation with the masters now! Keep up the good work, and know that I appreciate your show/s, and I'm sure a lot of other listeners do too. Fight the fight, Man! Negative people want to be heard more than happy people, so when you hear a lot of negative voices, that usually means you're doing something right. Haters gonna hate. But DUDE! I just rocked my first pro competition, and I'm betting it's because I've been hearing your voice like a bird on my shoulder. So, thank you Jim Harmer. Thank you for Improve.
  • Dmunderloh
    Bravo
Thanks for all the hard work - work that you seem to enjoy every week!
