What if you could hang out with experienced grape growers, ask them about the science of grape growing, vineyard operations, and more; then take an insight or two to improve your vineyard and ultimately the quality of the wines you produce? That’s what we do each week on the Vineyard Underground. Hosted by Fritz Westover –– viticulture expert more than 20 years of experience in the vineyard industry –– every episode is an in-depth look at grape growing methods, care, and even complicated matters of fertilization and pest and disease management? The goal is to provide you with an understanding of the complicated aspects of viticulture science so that experienced and even first-time grape growers will be able to understand and implement new practices in their vineyard.

    Fritz has a wonderful ability to present information about all aspects of growing a vineyard in a way that is easy to understand. Even though some topics are a bit technical or potentially “dry” (no wine humor intended) Fritz is able to communicate clearly and pleasantly. It makes you want more.

    In this podcast Fritz combines his knowledge gained from a post graduate education with that wisdom obtained in the real life school of the vineyard. If it has to do with wine grapes, Fritz has done it. He is a natural teacher & loves to problem solve. I’ve found these first few podcasts to be useful & applicable in my 3 acre, young vineyard.

    After reading lots of university viticulture guidance, I found the free offerings from Fritz. His advice is practical and experience based. This year we joined the Virtual Viticulture Academy and our vineyard management skills have greatly improved. With that said, I still found Fritz’s discussion of balance (not only in vine growth, but soil amendments too) very helpful.

    Fritz is amazing in how he balances all the dimensions of wine grape growing in topically focused learning sessions. The pace is also excellent in that it moves along briskly, but not so fast as to leave one lost. There is a great balance of science and practice so that the practice makes sense and can be adapted to individual vineyard situations. Example resources of supplies, materials and services are included.

    I’ve found dozens of great podcasts related to making great wines. But I’m not a winemaker, I’m a viticulturalist.
