Art Grind Podcast

146

Art Grind is a podcast for and about artists, art lovers and art professionals. It is a social practice of giving back to the art community of which we are a part and explores the process, content, concept and motivation behind art making of both established and emerging artists and the people who bring that art to a wider audience. We are artists ourselves and wear many hats, including curation, art writing and art teaching. We share a passion for authentic and skilled art making, be it trained or self-taught. Whether in the studio, on your lunch hour or chilling out after a long day of hustle, have a listen while we explore, along with our guests, the backstories of what we fondly call “the art grind”.

    Great Content
Great content and so informative. Though some of us out here in listening land are hard of hearing or hearing aid wearers - so can you work on the audio a bit? When you are the one interviewing people Tun, it’s so hard to hear you consistently well. I have to keep turning up the sound on any device that I am on. Then, when you guests speak, I have to quickly turn down the device I’m listening on, so it doesn’t blow out my ears. Again, great content. The audio mastering needs help. Please?

    Yayyy, you're back!
And better than ever! Can't wait for more. Real artists conversing like genuine, curious, enthusiastic human beings, as real artists do, but so rarely are given a platform for. The two hosts are excellent. Long may you run.

Marshall is such a great interviewer!!! Thanks for the show !
Marshall is such a great interviewer!!! Love the show!

    Too many “likes”
The people interviewing interrupt too much and so the question is never answered. The interviewers also use way too many likes in their speech which makes the podcast extremely unpleasant to listen to. It is too bad because the content is quite valuable.

    Phenomenal
This show is now the only art podcast I listen to. The presenters are so insightful and ask all the right questions. I recommend it to every artist I know. It is so motivational and interesting.

    Colin Chillag ruined it
There are some good episodes but seriously with Colin Chillag? The entire episode consists of some racist dog whistle ideas he’s repeating from the alt right which isn’t questioned or pushed back in any way. Mostly it sounds like a 13 year old attempting to repeat Jordan Peterson ideas and doing it very poorly with no nuance or understanding. So, sure this guy is really off but the hosts do an awful job trying to get it back to art or pushing back on the incredibly racist alt right ideas. Have a little bit of a spine please.

Let the guest artists speak uninterrupted!
I tried to listen to a few of these. They have wonderful guests, and the casual vibe is nice. But listeners are tuning in to hear the guest artists — not the podcasters. There is too much interruption after a question has been asked. It's disrepectful to the guest and annoying to the listener.

Like music to my artistic ears
Listened to Justin Hopkins being interviewed, (sorry, I left out part of his name…) but did not leave out LOVING listening to how he thinks. As an artist it is manna from heaven to hear so openly and personally, and so concisely about his process, feelings, impetus to create. I’m a fan and will be listening to Marshall and Dina more.

    Great
This is one of my go to studio podcasts. A cup of tea and some fresh paint, listening to tales of the grind during the wee hours of the morning…. It makes life better. :-)

    Very engrossing Podcasts!

I would give 5 stars but...
Can’t and I’ll explain why. I love almost everything about this podcast. Both hosts and guests are extremely interesting and passionate about the subjects. That being said, the guy host, Marshall I think?, interrupts the guests way too many times to tell his own story/tangent, that I can tell is inspired by the conversation, but essentially feels like a tangent and just distracts from the guests story!! I’m sorry but I want to hear the guest! Perhaps if you wrote down your thoughts and what the conversation made you think about to then discuss with the other host at the end of the show and expand on your own ideas and associations after the guest has left, I would LOVE to hear what the guest inspired for you. With all that being said, and if you’re a new listener and still reading this, it’s a great podcast with passionate hosts with thoughtful, inspiring guests with stories worth hearing.

    The real deal
This is a no nonsense podcast about art, it’s process and ideas. The conversations with the features artists are insightful and inspirational to other fellow artists. I love listening to this podcast while working in the studio! Keep up the good work Art Grind and looking forward to more episodes.

Art Grind episode 36 - Tim Okamura - All In
Tim Okamura is an easy listen as he talks about his life and art. I found in general he spoke from a place of fragility and some pain which added a layer of meaning to what he was sharing. This is another interesting discussion on race and it’s role and Power in the art world.

    Awesome podcast
I enjoy this while painting. The one with Anastasia was especially interesting. Wonderful to get a listen into the minds of artists and how they think about not only art but life itself. How the artist mind analyzes things. I enjoy the various backgrounds of artists. Also the one where they go into a gallery and describe the work and talk to people. I think he could even just describe the work. Perhaps with more research and description before going in. So we learn about the show and what the artists intentions are how he or she achieved that. I like description of each gallery. For example having someone like Anastasia looking at the work and talking about how she views the work. Also there is one person who talks a little too much about herself when we would like to hear the guest. This happened a lot during the Peter Trippi interview. If talking to artists who are younger and up and coming the playful chatting back and forth is fine but when it’s someone like Peter or Jacob Collins we want to hear what they have to say without as much interruption directing conversation to yourself please. Thank you! You all are doing a wonderful job. Each and everyone of you. Keep it up. :)

Good premise, but interviewer tries too hard
Interesting discussions. The interviewers have matured since the beginning. However, there is one pronounced irritant. Matthew constantly interjects noises, “hmmhmm”, in acknowledgment; that’s annoying. I’d rather just hear the artist interviewed than these obnoxious, unnecessary noises. It feels like he’s trying too hard. Sophia unfortunately doesn’t speak as much.... not sure why. But when she does speak, her comments have substance. I appreciate the podcast and the artists. Wish the male interviewer was more balanced, less demonstrative.

    Great podcast
Particularly liked the Mario Robinson interview which got into interesting discussions about Robinson’s particular path to becoming an artist but also speaks to the barriers all of us face in becoming artists in the face of a not always enthusiastic family and society.
  • ShaneIsAnArtist
    Full circle
Love the in-depth discussion with artists and how great conversations arise when interviewers respond to the artwork as they talk to the artists that create it.

For once the grind is worth it
Amazing guests. Great and fun conversations with working artists.

I’ve been an Artist my whole life, and Art Educator for over 20 years, and a Professional Muse for the last 4 years...it’s always great to hear Artists speak about their work, process, and survival. This is a great podcast!

If you are looking for nuggets of wisdom about art and artists
Honest and interesting conversation with artists that deserve more attention. Episodes are lengthy and unpredictable but if you give yourself time to listen you will hear nuggets of wisdom that will resonate and inspire.

    Fantastic!
Great podcast for painters, and all artists. Top notch selection of guests with infinite knowledge, opinions, and insight. Worthwhile!

    Never have written a review
...but I had to because the guest speaker Joe on episode 12 had no idea about animal empathy. Half of what was said on this episode and presented as fact was guesswork (done poorly I might add), generalizing dates, assuming their behavior studies/biology experts and barely mention art. Just a bunch of kids having a incredibly casual conversation. Listening is a waste of time and likely will make you less intelligent.

This is the best art podcast!
    Very impressive.
  • Nein1982
    Really quite enjoyable
Other than the difference in volume in the voices of the people that talk and it being super noisy and overwhelming when everyone laughs at the same time, the podcast is really super interesting. I quite enjoy listening to the conversation in general, but also each artist's thoughts about their creative process, their life, thoughts about different things, the conversation being peppered with swear words, it is a super refreshing and entertaining podcast. Nicely done!

    Cuts through the BS
I knew I needed this podcast in my life when I was listening to the interview with Vincent Desiderio (enough said) and Dina was talking about how what people desperately want is art now that cuts through the BS, and just lets people feel. “People want to feel something”. The podcast is needed, especially for artists. There are some minor editing issues (and the episodes that are over an hour and a half long is slightly too long for me) but it’s really coming into its own with each new episode that’s released. Keep up the great work and keep them coming!

    Great podcast
I listened to few episodes of the podcast and I’m giving it 5 ⭐️ because it feels like I’m hanging out with a bunch of friends, having fun and in the meantime getting to know awesome artists and about their art making.

    Awesome podcast
Informal yet personal, this podcast allows us to sit in on valuable conversations among artists, and hear their thoughts, ideas, and insights into process. ArtGrind is witty and entertaining, and the hosts let it feel like a conversation among friends rather than a stiff interview. Great to listen to while working, I could have these going all day. I highly recommend.

    Awesome Insight
So happy to find an episode featuring Hannah Faith Yata, one of my favorite artists : )
  • Lukeydukey788
    Great Show
I am a newbie to the show but I have enjoied listening to the podcast! As an MFA student in ceramic sculpture, I was worried at first the discussion would be to focused on the 2 demenional aspects of art and I would feel lost. This was not the case, the interviewees they have brought in have been rich full of poetic theory that is applicable to all mediums.
  • Gemma Di Grazia
It’s a great listen for artists
The show is informative, informal, yet thoughtful, and gives genuine insight into the creative process, as well as the daily struggles and triumphs of artists, and valuable insight from those in the art world. It’s on my short list of “must listen to” podcasts while I work.
  • Henrie Dereface
    Great Podcast!
I recently discovered Art Grind. It’s like having a bunch of really smart people, with interests similar to mine, having a conversation in my studio while I paint. Absolutely wonderful!
