Drama #99

Someone is changing all the streetlights in Pepper Heights, Cleveland. The color of nighttime is shifting. Everyone thinks they know what happened at the Pepper Heights Zoo… But do they, really?

Dane, a spun-out musician spending the winter in Cleveland, Ohio, has two main goals: keeping his job at the Pepper Heights Zoo and trying not to waste all his time on Grindr. What he doesn’t expect is to get swept into a story about dreams, about forevers, about flickering lights, about unexplained deaths, about relentless change, and about the parts of ourselves that we wish other people knew to look for. Oh, and also a murderous zebra.

    Oddly beautiful and immensely queer!
HUGE kudos to all the voice actors! At some points it is WAY too explicit for me, but it was so intensely complex and philosophical. Strange comedy. Gorgeous imagery. I love the different lives we see and the sci-fi vibes. “The Blue Hand” episode was an acid trip (literally), and the color song was so good! The music and sound effects in general were great. It’s a podcast where you never know what’s happening, but you also know exactly what is happening.

    the music!!!!
no joke, the best sound track and orchestration in any podcast i have heard. each episode is like a fantastic meal for my ears, and this is like the fifth time i've listened to the whole thing through.

    Hauntingly beautiful
Okay so ‘hauntingly beautiful’ sounds a bit cliché, but it’s definitely fitting. I listen to podcasts to sleep and rarely does one catch my full attention the way this one has. I didn’t know what to expect when it was recommended, but it wasn’t this. The story is very original and so well written. The voice actors are all top notch. It’s disturbing, funny, whimsical, erotic, suspenseful, and paints a picture in one’s mind like I’ve never experienced before. Apparently there’s no second season, but I’ll be looking for more from this writer/composer. The music is an entirely different delight completely. I can’t describe it. It just must be experienced. The presidential waltz ‘scene’ had me captivated for some reason. It seems so small and inconsequential but it, another lame cliche, blew me away. I was absolutely consumed by this dream world. Okay that’s more than sufficient for a podcast review. Just check it out, if you’re an adult and have space for what may be triggering content for some.

    Oddly completely and beautiful
Definitely for adults, but not too over the top. There’s such a strange eerie aesthetic that hooks you from the beginning.

Pretty explicit but a really engaging story
A bit too explicit to recommend on my facebook feed or anywhere my nieces and nephews might find it, maybe that’s why it might not have been shared too much. Also unfortunate that there haven’t been new episodes since 2019.

    Explicit for explicity stake
Explicitly just to be edgy adds nothing but run time

2nd Time Listening To Dreamboy And…
This is one of the best podcasts I’ve ever listened to. The atmosphere that the Dane and Ellie created with this one is really special. The story is captivating and imaginative but oh my god Dane’s composition truly steals the show. I’m listening to Sugar Neighbors on Spotify while I type this. That ending was beautifully done. I can’t believe we’re not getting a season 2!

Most captivating podcast I’ve listened to ever
Everything about this is so well done. The music, the storytelling, the background sounds, everything is so so good. It’s like watching a really good movie without even needing to see it. Hope there’s another season!!

    Beautiful
Beautiful story, beautiful score. Definitely want another season but it is capable of standing alone.

    Great listen!
Bittersweet ending though! I wish there was more but it was amazing while it lasted! AND THE MUSIC!!

    Stunning
This podcast absolutely transports me. The voice acting is solid, the music is frankly incredible, and the story is gripping, emotional, and wholly original. I’m sad I found this so late. By the way, the soundtrack is on Band camp via Dane’s account for dirt cheap. Recommended!!

    so so so so good
This is literally my favorite podcast, I’ve listened to it probably five or six times all the way through

unsatisfying conclusion, but music is worth it
The way this podcast is scored and its incorporation of original music is inncredible, and a joy to listen to. But I wouldn't recommend listening for the story : yes, it's a compelling mystery, but it's clear they had more story to tell and they weren't able to, so where it ends is too open-ended to be narratively satisfying. (I would also advise anyone with a sensitivity to violence in sex or dubious consent not to listen, as it does touch on those things but doesn't seem to recognize it's handling sensitive topics). Looking forward to whatever Dane and Ellie are working on next.

One of my favorites, the cliff hangers break my heart every time I relisten-- please come back 😭
  • SinjonC
One of the best podcast dramas I've ever listened to, period.
This is far and away the best nightvale presents podcast made and the fact that there is no second season from a lack of a large listener audience is CRIMINAL and it makes me so sad that we'll most likely never get another podcast with this level of production quality staring the same cast and crew.

    MORE 😭😭
I would give my left arm for any kind of extra content for this show PLEASE I love it so much and have listened to it way too many times, I am begging y’all to reconsider a second season or just anything!! The fans want more Dane !!!
  • JohnG4
Beautiful sound design, but that’s it.
The sound design and acting is on point, but there’s very little else to the show. It’s so disturbing for the sake of merely being disturbing that it comes off as gaudy. It’s lgbtq, but in the same way that hetero movies objectify women simply to get attention.
  • otter boy
    Please come back
Or even just an update on what y’all are working on. We’ll take anything. I’ve listened to this at least 4 times all the way through and i am desirous

I’m so sad that this amazing podcast is gone!! Pleeeeease make another season!

    What?
Guy has the background music up so high I can’t hear what he’s saying. Just minutes into the first episode and the guy has already randomly referenced his dick’s hardness in two unrelated parts of the story. Pass.

    Best Unfinished Podcasts
This is by far the best podcast I’ve ever had the pleasure to listen to. The music, the story, the characters and the production are all outstanding and it’s so disappointing that they were unable to continue the series into a second season. I’ve listened to this series probably five times and the music more times than I can count, and I recommend it to anyone who will listen to me.

Ok I’m new to listening to podcast and I’m in love it all I do now.! But I can’t begin to describe the relatable feelings to this story it’s eerie, overwhelming and captivating. Go Dreamboy!! #dreamkittens If I could move all of your mountains that be in your way to put this show back on I’d wish it so. And since that’s impossible I will pray to a fake being til I die this show was the best think I’ve had the pleasure of listening too and knowing this story thank you Dreamboy Creators. A beautiful and moving story
I binged this entire podcast over the course of a day, and immediately bought the album of music when I got home I loved it so much! Dreamboy is erotic, surreal, and wholly addictive. If the creators ever decide to pick this story back up, I would drop everything to listen.
  • the_reelest
    Amazing podcast / Tim Burton?
First of all, this is one of my favorite story podcasts. The main plot is a mystery/adventure, but this sense of mystery surrounds pretty much everything in the story from it’s interesting characters to extraneous details; it kept me hooked the whole way through. The whole thing felt very well done and immersive... but also! I don’t know if anyone got this vibe, but there’s something about the setting, tone, musical score and narrative that all reminds me of Tim Burton movies or Coraline. I think it’s probably the surreal, dream-like tone that gave me the impression.

    Dreamboy my heart.
I loved this podcast. It was kind of like a short story, but with rad music. I wouldn’t change a single thing about it. But someone tell me why I was crying when they were in the hole together lol. And I want some cinnamon cake! I hope he writes or produces more stuff. Stephen King has this to say about short stories: “A short story is a different thing altogether – a short story is like a quick kiss in the dark from a stranger.” That’s how it made me feel.

    Wow
I wanted this podcast to go on forever. So good. Ok, I’m not sure what the story line could possibly be, and I respect the creators’ decision, but fantastic job! Also, SAVE ZOE.

Great for Weird Listeners with a Penchant for Eroticism!
I LOVED Dreamboy and if they ever make a season 2, I’ll drop every other podcast I’m binging just to listen in. It’s beautiful in its storytelling, lovingly crafted, and the sound design and quality is out of this world. An engaging and weird story, with twists and turns and characters that make you keep your ears to the ground, it’s uniquely told tale will keep you guessing! That being said, BE PREPARED for the high amounts of eroticism, erotica, and straight up porn (minus the straight). As a lesbian with a healthy enthusiasm for porn, I had no problem with the gay MCs flinging their boners every which way, which ends up explaining about 90% of the attraction between the main 2 protags. The sex the 2 protags engage in is DEFINITELY NOT vanilla though, so if you have had violent sexual encounters in the past, perhaps consider skipping this podcast since it doesn’t provide warnings in the beforehand notes. It did throw me off and for a loop at the same time a good deal of the time though, considering I had to keep a straight (lol) face while listening to this podcast since I listen to most of my podcasts AT WORK. Needless to say, not work appropriate. It does keep you enthralled while throwing boxes around though, so it’s succeeded as it’s true purpose of entertainment. 4/5 Stars for incredible storytelling, amazing music, and spectacular imagination! Would’ve gotten all five if a more comprehensive warning system was in place with a lesser focus on the sexual energies between the characters.

    Love it!
This show is sexy, scary, sometimes funny and downright beautiful. Highly recommend if you like sci-fi/horror and more than a bit of raunch!

    ♥️
Ugh my heartbreaks! I loved this show , the story was awesome and the music is amazing! I legit am so sad it’s over now, i feel like a lot of people waited very patiently for it to have a second season, and now are very sad it won’t. I hope they comeback with something else or just decide to surprise everyone and keep it going somehow! I will re-listen to it, it’s just that good! 🌈♥️

    It should’ve had a warning
At first I loved it. I was so interested in the mystery of it and then when they started introducing a love interest I thought it’d be cute. Then they went way too far. I thought this would be a normal, fiction story with some action and some clean romance. Very disappointed that there wasn’t even a warning about it, usually explicit podcasts just means there’s some language, this needs some other marker.
  • Darcy is awesome!
Weird, funny, weirdly sexy, and has a lot of heart.
This show really drew me in - I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I love the way the story is told, and the characters are super lovable. I hope there’ll be more from you guys eventually!

    My 💔
I’m subscribed to over 200 podcasts and this is my favorite hands down. I’m deadass I’ll personally help create more episodes, I’m so in love with these characters and this world I don’t want to let them go!

This is my favorite podcast ever
I won’t go so far as to say I’m a podcast expert, but I do listen to a fair many fiction podcasts (and nonfiction, too) and Dreamboy is by far my favorite. I only started listening to it about a year ago, but I have relistened and relistened and relistened countless times now. The story. The music. The sound design. The characters. There is nothing that I do not love with every fiber of my being about this show. I can’t wait for season 2, whenever that’s coming, and I just want to thank Dane and Ellie for creating such a truly beautiful, moving show. You’re doing wonderful things 🖤🖤🖤

    Excellent
This podcast is so special. Not only is it well written and performed, it captures and expresses the complexity of aspects of life that are too often forgotten in entertainment. I laughed, I cried, and was left begging for more. From the story to the music, this is a masterpiece and has quickly and absolutely become my favorite podcast out there. Bravo!

Just took it up, not a fan
Why is the music so overwhelming, maybe crank the music down from 11? It's super distracting and takes away any interest I may have had.

    Incredible Narrative
I binged this podcast so hard. The music and story are incredible. Incredible direction, wonderfully crafted. Hard yes to this podcast.

    Feels
I don’t typically cry at podcasts. Dreamboy, without a doubt, has caused more genuine emotions for me than almost all fiction I’ve consumed.

The Best Audio Drama I Have Ever Heard
Listening to Dreamboy is like being suspended in midair. You forget what's up and what's down and just enjoy the break from gravity.

    Listening to Goodnight Esmeralda.....
In listening to the intro it stated appropriate for all ages. Iam not sure if it’s appropriate when the story is talking about having a wet dream. I will not listen nor support, but good luck.

    Story wrapped around gay porn
First, I want to state I am not homophobic. With that out of the way, I will give you an honest short review. The author (and narrator) have a talent in both storytelling and descriptive writing. The story is easy to follow and well written at the heart or the plot. However, I feel he wants to tell us more about his sexuality than to tell an engaging tale. And he does, over an over in such descriptive language that you feel overwhelmingly disgusted. I kept pushing through the porn to finish the story, but in the end, the story conclusion was anticlimactic, unlike his many perverse encounters with his main characters. Don’t get me wrong, this is obviously his purpose in writing this story, but if that’s your intention, mention it in the description and don’t try to “ slip it in” to your unsuspecting audience.
