History #141

We’re living in unprecedented times. Maybe. In this show, Jody Avirgan (538, 30for30, TED) and historians Nicole Hemmer (Vanderbilt) and Kellie Carter Jackson (Wellesley) take one moment, big or small, from that day in U.S. political history and explore how it might inform our present –– all in about fifteen minutes.

New episodes release Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Sign up for the newsletter and more at ThisDayPod.com. We’re also posting about moments from the past @thisdaypod on Threads and Instagram. If you have a suggestion for a topic, get in touch.

William Henry Harrison cause of death
He died because he fell in the canal in Fort Wayne Indiana. I am from that city, so I KNOW this is true. 😊

    My favorite podcast!
I’ve been a listener since the show’s launch and it is never ceases to fascinate and intrigue me. Thank you Jody, Nicole,

    One of my favs
The host and guests make me laugh while I learn a little bit about American history every day. I wish episodes were longer!

    Love!
Such an awesome snapshot at crazy events in our nation’s past. The hosts are knowledgeable and so fun! This is a great listen!

    An absolute favorite
As a history major, I firmly believe if history were taught in a manor similar to this podcast (not stuffy, not just names and dates) students and the rest of society would benefit. Thanks for the time and effort of TDIEPH’s staff!

    History Gems
First, this trio of hosts is delightful. Their rapport, knowledge, and warmth make each episode a joy. The content is varied but rich, and fascinating. From exploding whales, to the first telephone in The White House, history is vast and studded with hidden, yet relevant gems. So good!

    Kelly Carter Jackson keep laughing
I love how this show has fun with history and how absurd reality can be. Truth is really stranger than fiction

    Good concept, Jodi is great
Good concept. Some great episodes. However, the new episodes where Kelly Jacksons voice, laugh, and constantly bringing the story back to herself becomes extremely tiresome to listen to.

    Questionable
After listening to my first episode — the one about Mary Decker and Zola Budd — I realized that I could not take this podcast seriously. Not very well researched. Pretty one-sided. I don’t want to hear viewpoints masqueraded as facts.

    Just another progressive circlejerk
I loved the concept of this show when I first heard about it, but after listening to a dozen or so episodes I quickly realized it’s just yet another podcast featuring far left “intellectuals” painting historical events to suit their narratives. Plenty of cheerleading for leftwing politicians and slagging of rightwing ones. I hate both parties, so at least criticize both if you can’t simply be neutral. Look elsewhere if you want an unbiased podcast and not another dime-a-dozen echo chamber.

Feed is clogged with irrelevant shows
The show has some good episodes, but they clog up the podcast feed with episodes of unrelated shows. This is a pet peeve of mine. Just because I subscribe to this show doesn't mean I want to hear every podcast you've ever been on. keep the feed on topic.

    American Girl dolls…what a revelation!
As a loyal listener for the past few years, I’ve learned so much from Jody, Kellie, & Nicole. I’ve laughed a lot too! I LOVE this show & really appreciate all of the work that goes on behind the scenes. The last episode was such a surprise to me! As a GenX’er I had no idea AG dolls were anything more than on overpriced toy. Learning that some of that cash went toward a 3-year advisory board to develop an African American doll changed my perspective a little bit. That’s why I listen. Thanks & ❤️to This Day’s crew & to Aisha Harris!

    Could do more
I love the concept of this show, but wish the episodes were more detailed. I also was pretty shocked to hear an ad for a weird doomsday prepper website.
  • Auron Renouille
    Really?
The show is interesting but sort of under-researched - we get the opening tag line that such-and-such happened on such-and-such day but then extremely few details. And now they’re taking sponsorship money from far-right prepper sites, which is sort of my limit :(.

    V good
Very good but please turn down Kelli’s laughing. It gets overly frequent and loud.
  • Jeff T was already taken
    Jim who?
The April 4th podcast notes should be corrected to read Governor Evan (not Jim) Mecham.

Just another woke anti capitalist university shill
I really wanted to like this, but I just can’t get past their pro government intervention, anti capitalist agenda. These hosts throw around words like “capitalist” in the wrong context instead of actually educating people on what these words actually mean. I’m tired if listening to unacademic girlfriends chat about their day. I’ll move on to another history podcast.

Nice idea but annoying, slanted presentation
I really like the idea of “this day in history,” but instead of a discussion of history, all you get is the hosts trying to signal how progressive they are. I lean left too but it’s irritating. This latest episode was a great example, in which they absolutely fawned over the black panthers. Look, I completely understand / sympathize with the motivation for such an organization to be created in segregated America. But are we seriously going to pretend the black panthers are all sunshine and rainbows?? We’re talking about a group that engaged in extrajudicial torture and killing (google Alex Rackley). There’s no need to excessively demonize the panthers either, but an honest portrayal would at least give SOME indication that they are controversial.

Don't let the word "esoteric" put you off!
This is an excellent podcast on important moments in US history. Perhaps in our "history-is-bunk" culture, some people might call the topics "esoteric" (by which they might mean oscure and unimportant), but I think there are giving us a thick description of how we have became what we are today. They help us to overcome our belief in "imaginary bridges" (see episode "Family Jewels w/ Rick Perlstein") and a false sense of our national innocence. Check out the episode "McKinley Lost-Causes: The Civil War (1898)! Many must-listen episodes!

I may have to stick a screw driver in my ears…
I listen to this show religiously. I love the content. I adore the humor. The hosts are a perfect complement to each other. But I’m going to have to stick a screwdriver in my ear if Nicole and Kelly don’t shut the eff up with the constant affirmative noises. “Mmmm….” “Mmm hmmm” “uh huh” “hmmm” Please for the love of god shut up or edit those out!!! Noise for the sake of noise! It’s like listening to someone chew!!!
  • Slimdickly
    Mmmm…..Hmmmm….
Short, Jody and the crew are smart and clever. Great guests and topics. Love the closing song
  • McPirkl
Casual, witty banter masquerading as history
Great report between the hosts, intelligent discussion, unique slants in some events you remember and some you’ve never heard of. Love listening!
  • Kaitlyn Yang
    Such a cool show!
It’s short, it’s quirky, and you learn a lot. What’s not to love?

    Be impressive
Love this podcast. In 15 minutes I learn something new to squirrel away until an awkward silence at a party or when making polite conversation with a stranger when…BAM I impress them with this really awesome thing I know that they have never heard of! Enjoyed it since day 1.

    Great content!
I’ve listened from the very first episode and I’ve never missed one. I love learning about things in our history that I didn’t know about and I love hearing new perspectives on the things I did know about. I enjoy the hosts a lot! Thanks for the great content!

This is a great podcast and the hosts cover all different types of events. I feel like I have learned so much from listening and the hosts do a great job.

    Always something interesting
The Brando-Littlefeather episode was really enlightening. It was poignant to listen to it after this year’s Academy Awards, with the Will Smith/Jada Pinkett-Smith/Chris Rock incident. I would love to hear your guest’s reaction.

    My Favorite Historical Podcast
I can’t get enough of This Day in Esoteric Political History. Jody, Nicole, and Kellie cover anything and everything, and their insight, intellect, and humor are much appreciated. The three of them also do a nice job tying events of the past, whether they were 2 weeks or 200 years ago, to what’s going on in the news today. Highly, highly recommend.

    A+
This show is like listening to your cool older brother talk with the two best (and also coolest) professors you had in college about random stuff they all find interesting. Keep up the good work

    McDonalds Episode
Inadvertently shilling for the most evil corporation on earth. They serve disgusting product. Also, Nicole Hemmer’s voice is nails on a chalkboard.

    Laughing is out of control
The almost constant laughing by the female hosts is above and beyond what’s really humerous. She (they) see to think everything is amazingly funny. Seriously affects my listening enjoyment, otherwise a great show….almost.
  • podcastfan100
    Great concept but
It seems like a lot of the historical events they talk about are looked through a racial lens. Hosts are all very left-leaning so the shows sound like an echo chamber. Love the concept, wish they brought on some different perspectives, examined history objectively, and didn’t agree with each other 100% of the time.

    Pretty good
Overall this is a pretty good show. The Bush shoe throwing episode was terrible.

    Nerd alert!
The perfect podcast for political and history nerds alike! Love it.
  • Kleinias
Started out promisingly but now partisan
Update: Their latest podcast on “The Beer summit” used racist terminology. It’s one thing to be intellectually dishonest but this is pretty awful. This show started out so promisingly but the latest episode devolved into a partisan mess. It’s just so disappointing when ideology rises above truth and accuracy. Once that trust is broken with your listeners it’s forever gone. 5/9/21 I returned to this podcast to see if there was any improvement. Unfortunately they have given up even any pretension of being judicious. It’s devolved into a podcast meant to preach to the choir.

    Perfect Trio
Charmed by the gregarious nature of Jody. Hooked by the brilliance of Nicole and Kellie.

    Yay, Rat Episode!
