Buried Bones

On Buried Bones, journalist Kate Winkler Dawson and retired investigator Paul Holes dissect some of history’s most compelling true crime cases from centuries ago. Together, they explore these very old cases through a 21st century lens. With their years of expertise and knowledge of modern forensics, they reflect on how far science has come and bring new insight to old mysteries. Together, Kate and Paul have examined many cases including the 1932 Lindbergh baby kidnapping, the first time fingerprinting was used as evidence in a courtroom and a possible serial killer in 1960s Nashville. They ask, was the right person convicted or was someone wrongfully accused?See pictures, diagrams and evidence from each case on Instagram @buriedbonespod.Buried Bones is part of the Exactly Right podcast network that provides a platform for bold, creative voices to bring to life provocative, entertaining and relatable stories for audiences everywhere. Dynamic duo
Love this pairing! The way Kate introduces the case is truly like coming upon it and working one’s way through the event and material from a cold case perspective m. Being a Contra Costa kid with law enforcement ties, Paul is one of the good ones and brings understanding and knowledge that true crime lovers want to know and ask the questions that we hope we have.

    “There’s a pathology there”
I’ve enjoyed this podcast since it started. I love the combination of Kate’s historical story telling with Paul’s experience. Please can we have “There’s a pathology there” merch !!
  • ntdwwira
Enjoyable but cover the full case
Gosh darn it, too many part twos!!! Skip the nerve damage and c section chatter and you’ll have plenty of time for the whole story 😜

Buried Bones is a brilliant podcast
I love it. I listen to each one the moment it is uploaded to my phone. Yes I listen when I get home from work and multitask all the heck out of this podcast. Good listen.

Paul & Kate shine in Buried Bones
Interesting podcast that offers a new perspective on true crime. Plus, Paul Holes is all I need to catch my attention.
  • KTBlount
    Great Show
The only problem with this podcast is that it only comes out once a week and I immediately listen to it (and then have to wait a whole 7 days!). Love the banter, love the experience Paul brings to the show, and how much I learn about history and the logic that detective work uses. Kate is an excellent host and a great story teller.

    Why do journalists
Have such bad grammar? It’s the tool of their trade. Use it properly. Stop mixing plurals and singular terms. Be educated.
  • BeckettKael
    Playing dumb?
I don’t understand why KWD describes herself as someone who has written about true crime for 25 years, then constantly acts like she is shocked by totally normal elements of crime. Is it an act for the show or has she truly lived such a sheltered life that she is constantly stunned and baffled by her own area of “expertise”?

    Love this podcast!
I found this podcast about six months ago and have binged every episode! Absolutely love it.

    Bingy
I binged this podcast in an unhealthy way. It’s Amazing!!

    Finally, my obsession goes mainstream.
Having had tangential connections to 3 murders as a child (between 8-10) I have always been drawn to crime and murder investigations. And because only one of those murderers was prosecuted, long forgotten, unsolved murders are fascinating to me. Paul is one of the heroes who has evolved as science and technology has enabled a few of the monsters from the past to finally be brought to justice. Paul, If you ever want to take on unsolved cases in South Carolina, I have some info to get you started! Kate is a first rate storyteller and historian. I love her other podcasts, so I knew adding Paul could only make a great show even greater-er 😊

    Let me set the scene
But did Paul Holes work on GSK? He never EVER mentions it, so I'm not sure. I do love KWD puts him firmly in place as her assistant. It's nice to see his ego have to shrink a bit. Stories are interesting too. Nice break from gory present day true crime. Edited to 5 stars because I love that 'liberal whiny woman!'

I always look forward to Wednesday!
I love this podcast! I always look forward to Wednesday when the podcast drops. I enjoy the history that Kate unfolds while Paul gives his expertise in the law. It is very top notch!!!

    Too Much “Woke”
Stories are interesting and seem well researched. Love Paul Holes, on the fence about Dawson. Listening to Coyote Flat it seems like filler telling the listener many times that they were racist in 1920, yes, we know. Also, to inform the listener they called them Indians, but we say Native American now is not necessary. Stop with the PC and just tell us the story. Had to unsub when you start making excuses for a murderer, I’m out.
  • Camyado
    Too much rambling.
They just chat most of the time. They aren’t witty or interesting. It takes so long for them to get to the point. It takes half the episode for them to get to the point. And this type of cold case true crime podcast is one of my favorite genres.
  • LMSMK25
    You know
Sorry guys, I’ve listened to every show and LOVE them but the “you knows” from both Kate and Paul are getting out of control and are distracting. I will totally update this comment later. I get that it becomes a habit so just wanted to point it out.

    Osteopathic
Two types of medical degrees: MD (allopathic) and DO (osteopathic). Both must complete a residency and pass their boards to be licensed physicians or surgeons on the US. Surprised you didn’t research this prior to your episode on Riverdale, NJ hospital.

    Great podcast
I could listen to these two talk about anything. Great chemistry between them. Good true crime concept. Very respectfully done.

    Liberal Slant
So hard to find good podcasts without any bias in them. Paul Holes in very intelligent. Enjoyed his commentary. Female host, good grief, liberal all day. Whiney woman.

    My favorite podcast!
Every week I look forward to hearing Kate and Paul discuss another “buried” mystery. Their interaction is great and the stories are always intriguing. I love all the anecdotal information about their families and fish. I also feel connected because I live north of Austin and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. Great job!

    Love it
I love hearing these stories and the insights Paul can provide on how the outcome could have been different.

    Amazing podcast!
I LOVE this podcast! Kate asks all the questions I’m thinking, and Paul answers them so intelligently while also not assuming facts about the case or over-romanticizing what may have happened. Very easy to listen to and every episode is incredibly interesting.

    Dear Paul Holes…
Please, PLEASE, stop saying the crutch phrase - “you know!” But, you know, absolutely love this podcast otherwise.
  • Chelsey Beavers
    Love!
I love history and true crime! This is literally the perfect podcast.

    Love the show
I was so surprised when they first announced this duo. They seemed like such a weird combo, but I LOVE the show. It’s usually an historical glimpse into history and murder (perfect.)
  • CapCoJo
    Great insight!
I love hearing the perspective that Paul has on the cases as well as Kate! Paul has so much knowledge and sheds light on things I never knew. My only dislike of the show, as it has gone on, it seems like Kate puts extra attention on race issues, how females used to be treated etc. Not to say those issues aren’t important and they weren’t real with the timeframe however, it seems like there is too much time spent talking about it on every episode. We all can acknowledge how things were in the past, it’s time to move forward.
  • TonR80
    cases are too old
I would love to listen to these guys talk about more recent cases. The super old cases are just boring. Great team, love the way they communicate. The subject matter is lacking. I was pumped when they talked about a case from the 1980s! 1700s-1800s, who cares!?
  • Spike 1954
    I never miss an episode!
many true crime podcasts are disappointing that this is not one of them. Both people involved, Kate Winkler, Dawson and Paul holes, our exceedingly intelligent people, and they bring perspectives to historical crime that are thought-provoking and well worth your time. I give 10 stars if I could.
  • ( Lu )
    Love it!
Paul and Kate are the perfect pairing. The way Kate unfolds each story while Paul analyzes is both fascinating and entertaining. Keep up the great work you do!

Love this podcast! I keep up with it weekly. Good work 👏🏽

    Podcast
I followed long ago and just turned to this morning. I’m not too far into the podcast and I love how the cases are broken down and looked at differently than any other podcast I’ve listened to. And I listen to quite a few true crime podcasts. I will continue to listen. Thank you for the wonderful podcast y’all!
  • dropseventy
    Too much annoying banter
I love the actual true crime part of this podcast. But the first 5 minutes of most episodes are just the hosts pushing their books and praising each other so much that it almost gets uncomfortable. It’s too bad because when they finally get to the subject of the podcast, it’s always a good tale well told. The banter just ruins it for me. A little friendly banter is nice, but this is over the top.
  • KateSums
Such a refreshing and unique style of true crime podcast
I am a huge fan of true crime podcasts. Finding one that is so different and unique is hard to do. Kate and Paul look at cases in such a compelling way that only they can do. 10/10 recommend!
  • MegEMScott
    Frustrating
The only reason I give this podcast any stars at all as for Paul holes. I was so excited to have them back in the podcast, but this one is just bizarre. This woman claims to have all of this experience and true crime but I have been shocked at the things that she doesn’t know and honestly with the host like Paul holes you need to be able to keep up with him. At least know more than true crime 101. She asks some of the silliest and most ridiculous questions about things even a lay person would know the answers to. It’s a complete waste of Paul holes.
  • m.burr

    All podcasts
Regarding the Lucy Pollard murder Your perception of Southerners as “white man bad” is just tiresome. You speak of people from the South as if they woke up every morning with the intention to either murder blacks or railroad them. And your disbelief that blacks could actually commit crimes and were always innocent is puzzling. (The North was segregated in case you ever want to look into that.) The use of lib buzzwords “racism” and “sexism” are inappropriate words to use for 1895. These people were a product of their time. To scold their behavior now is just silly. Solomon was a poor black man in possession of a $20 after a robbery and murder. Looking at him suspiciously is common sense not “racism.” I happen to believe his white man story. Aside from that, I listen to your podcast religiously. One more thing. “Often” is pronounced “offen.” The T is silent. I learned that in second grade.

My first dive into much older cases
I’ve been obsessed with true crime for as long as I can remember, but never listened to podcasts about cases older than about 1960’s. The format with Buried Bones has me hooked! I love the way Kate likes the story up for Paul and how he picks it apart from an investigative standpoint. Don’t ever stop!
  • psyctx
    Excellent but …
I love all of your podcasts, but I beg you to stop saying supposeBLy. It’s supposeDly.
  • Bgirlgagaspears930
    2 Parters
I think this podcast is great, but recently there have been so many 2 parters that could have been covered in 1 episode. If the 2 parts were released closer together, that would be fine. But now, I don’t bother listening to episodes that are multiple parts because its not worth waiting a week just to get the rest of the story. If this starts to change back to the OG format, I would likely update my review
  • Selfemployedwoman
Yes! AND- please create a sign off
I love this show. I’m a big fan of these two. I’ve listened to ‘all that is wicked’, and read Paul’s memoirs. This podcast is great. 99.9% amazing. It would be 100% if they created a sign off. The and of the show is always a bit jarring and quick. I wish Paul and Kate had something they said at the end of the show so the end isn’t just a sudden cut off- you know, like SSDGM from MFM. Otherwise it’s perfect the way it is.

    My favorite poscast!
The rapport between Kate and Paul is great, and they both bring their strengths to this podcast! I enjoy the lighthearted banter at the beginning of the episode before they dive in to the crime stories!

I love Kate and I love Paul
The chemistry is insane, you both seem like great friends and colleagues, it’s great to listen to both of you riff off each other. This makes me want to work in forensic science! 🤍 love yall
  • Katie_Long
    Keep them coming!
This is one of my favorite podcasts. I love the deductive reasoning and logic used to work through the cases blended artfully with the historical facts and cultural contexts. While some true crime podcasts seem to revel in describing the gory details, I appreciate that this one is scientific in the crime scene descriptions and always attempts to be respectful to the victims.
  • stevenscold
    A gentle suggestion
Kate and Paul have good chemistry and together make up a great podcast. A couple of helpful suggestions to improve it even further would be to minimize the intro chitchat and stop asking Paul the order he wants to talk about things. Edit it out - we don’t need to hear your housekeeping discussions on the order of the podcast details. Thank you!
