History #65

From the co-creators of Slow Burn, Fiasco is a narrative podcast that transports listeners into the day-to-day reality of America’s most pivotal historical events. The fifth season of the show goes deep on the AIDS epidemic in America, with a special focus on the early years of the crisis, when a diagnosis was tantamount to a death sentence. The eight-part series looks at the mystery and missteps around identifying and treating a new, contagious disease, and what it took to get the public — and the government — to care.

If you want more Fiasco, be sure to check out the latest season, available exclusively on Audible. The six-part series tells the story of a shooting that took place in 1984 on the New York City subway, leaving four Bronx teenagers gravely wounded and turning a man named Bernie Goetz into a national folk hero. Fiasco: Vigilante offers a panoramic but intimate view of how this era-defining story unfolded, giving voice for the first time to key players, and immersing listeners in the gritty, paranoid world of ’80s New York City.

Fiasco: Vigilante launches July 27th on Audible at audible.com/fiasco.

    Excellent Reporting
I grew up as a child of the 80s and AIDS was everywhere but your report gave me a whole new insight into the history of how it was treated and actions taken or lack of. Looking forward to the next topic.

If only politics could have been left out of this podcast…
I enjoyed learning about this subject now that more is known about AIDS/HIV. The narrator has a pleasant voice and tone~ just seems a bit biased towards the left. And WAY too easy on Fauci and his missteps with this disease. He is responsible for much of the delays in acting - very sad.

    Absolutely brilliant journalism
The extremely important story of AIDS in American is given the dignity it deserves with incredible research and storytelling at its finest. A must-listen — I cannot recommend more highly

    Often excellent, but not always
I was a big fan of Slow Burn. I’ve listened to the first three episodes of Season 5 (AIDS crisis), all of which have been excellent. I also really enjoyed Season 2 (Iran-Contra). However. I stopped listening about halfway through the first episode of Season 1 (Bush v Gore) because the narrator grossly misrepresented Gore’s odds of winning the election. I am old enough to remember that one, and it’s simply not true that Gore was on a glide path to the presidency. I also stopped listening to Season 3 (Boston busing) very early on, because the narrator completely sidestepped a huge issue: both black and white parents objected to their children spending literally hours on the bus. There was *also* a lot of racism, but I can’t trust someone who doesn’t even mention this. San Francisco is one of the few cities that still buses, and every parent I know says it adds nothing but chaos to school admissions. We also still have very disparate educational gaps, so however well-intentioned, busing is bad policy. Bottom line, like all wonky podcasts, the narrator has a distinctly liberal lean. That mostly works for me since it’s in line with my own political sympathies, but be aware you may not be getting the full story.

Terrific but what is the schedule?
There hasn’t been a new episode in 3 weeks. Help!! 😆

    2000 election
This has been the most informative thing about the 2000 election I have come across so far. Loved every episode!

    Lots of info
But voter suppression is barely mentioned. These episodes are interesting but this podcast spends little time on the large effect of Florida’s racist laws and Republicans’ use of them for power. Just remember that as you listen.

    Well done!
This is the first Presidential Election I voted in so I remember it well. The podcast does an excellent job of recreating that era and all the dynamics that were at play. You also get to hear current interviews from the people that were involved and old news clips that really bring the time period back. Highly recommended!

    Explains 2 decades later
So relevant for what is ongoing in this 2020 election. Those outside of South Florida are still bewildered by the Trump support in Miami-Dade. This podcast gives context as to why.

    Sooo good!
I usually don’t leave Apple reviews but man this one deserves. So well done. It honestly feels like you are there... paints a perfect picture of what went down.

    Only some of season 1
I didn’t expect that you’d upload only a partial season without letting people know. It’s a very interesting subject and I feel like you should have made the limited episodes part more clear at the beginning in ITunes so people know what they’re starting. You refer to it as “Season 1” but it would be more accurate to say “3 free episodes of 11”

    Compelling
Love the straightforward but compelling way this history is presented. Appreciate that the narrators just...narrate, without needing to do a bunch of dumb jokes or something. A new angle on a historical event I thought I knew.

This explains so much. So relevant to today’s situation!!!

    Solid Gold and Ton Heavy
A tremendous show about an election that is more bizarre and corrupt than almost anyone remembers. The story is captivating, and the podcast features interviews with a wide range of firsthand participants: Justice John Paul Stevens, Florida Sec of State Katherine Harris, and dozens of others.

    This one delivers
This is an amazing listen that keeps the promise of making the listener feel like they are watching events unfold in real time. I listened to this when it was released and will likely listen again now that it’s public.

Essential for political junkies and history buffs
This show is so good! And surprising! I never knew that environmentalists and Cubans swung the election. You’ll get it if you listen
  • OH! I-O
    Need to know for 2020
Not only is this story captivating it is need to know for anyone who is voting in the 2020 election. The story telling is easy to follow and includes interviews with the players. I just sent this to all of my kids and told them it is a must listen as they have all reached the age to vote! 2 of which are 1st time voters.
