How We Survive

711

For “Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal, joining the Navy fresh out of college was a defining chapter in his life. It was the 1980s; the Cold War and the Soviet Union was the greatest threat. Fast-forward through 40 years — and one career change — and the threat looks different. Climate change has no face or flag, but it will fundamentally change the way the U.S. military trains and fights. It already has.

"How We Survive" is an award-winning podcast from Marketplace about the messy business of climate solutions. In our sixth season, Kai Ryssdal travels to far corners of the world to shine a light on how the institution that shaped him could shape our climate future. From a small Arctic village to a remote island in the Pacific, we'll take you to the front lines of the fight against the crisis.

…sat in that 50-degree tank for 666 minutes. While draining a case of cheap whiskey. Got out. Flipped the bird at pictures of Obama and Clinton. Posed in a Musk-Bannon salute while facing Russia. And finished with 34-time felon Duh Donalds on three bottle-blond, phony topped social media influencers. While singing Duh Donald Dyed Dixie Banner.

Over the years we have grown to feel the Kai is part of our family Over the several series of podcasts, he manages to discover the human side of business, economics, and, of course, serious topics like climate change. We trust Kai, and you should too listen to everything he does.

    Thoughtful and alarming
Kai does an amazing job explaining complex topics in laymans terms. Climate change and its related risks to our way of life are overwhelming, yet Kai is able to look them calmly in the eye, wrestle their daunting threats to the ground so that we can all have some hope of understanding and overcoming them.Thank you !

    What happened to latest season?
Coverage of how the military is fighting climate change has disappeared from the episode archives. What gives? I’m going to be very disappointed if this is due to the new administration. Grow a backbone.

    Worth Your Time (and Fun!)
I really enjoyed this series. It doesn’t offer answers so much as explain the problems that are and will continue to be important in so many different ways. Kai is a delightful and informative host, and his (and the show’s) perspective is really great. Recommend for anyone who cares about climate, national security, or just generally being informed on important issues of the day.

    Solid Listen
Interesting subject matter focusing on the challenges we will see as we transition to renewable energy. I tend to be in the middle of the climate change narrative - not believing that the earth is on the verge of collapse nor believing that we can do whatever we want to the earth without consequences. If you tend to fall on either extreme camp, this podcast might be a turn off for you. Molly does an excellent job explaining the many aspects of the challenges an electric future will hold. For the most part, she does a good job on keeping a level head with the science of climate change without pushing too far into a government overreach agenda or fear mongering. However, episode 6 nearly turned me off from the podcast altogether - as the guest might be one of the most egotistical climate alarmist I’ve ever heard. His rants about establishing a “carbon based currency” and destroying pipelines proved how out of touch with reality he is (which shouldn’t be surprising coming from a fiction author with no scientific authority). Needless to say this episode nearly derailed the podcast as a whole for me. That being said, the rest of the episodes were solid and insightful. The race for batteries is much more complex than I initially thought, and I learned a lot as I made my way through the podcast. Hope to hear more from Molly in future seasons. Edit: The initial review was for season 1. The following seasons have each been enjoyable learning experiences. Each season (minus this past one) still has an episode that focuses on fictionalized scenarios by people with no scientific authority. While this might appeal to a radical climate alarmist, it has to no real bearing on reality, and detracts from the podcast as a whole.

    Great Job Ky
If you’ve listened to Marketplace, you are familiar with this quality journalism. Lu and team have taken that excellent workmanship and applied it to a very serious topic from a unique perspective. Well done, highly recommend. This should be required listening for anyone living on the planet.

    What a great find!
I’m a regular listener of Marketplace. I enjoy Kai’s approach to current events in the business world. But I was surprised to hear a very different side of him when I tuned into NPR on a short drive around town. Here’s this business nerd talking about climate change threats to national security with a crazy vignette about first being subjected to incredibly dangerous high temperatures followed shortly thereafter to an ice bath, all the while having to perform challenging mental tasks. I HAD to find this pod cast! Along the way I learned about his past in the Navy (including landing jets on carriers and working at the Pentagon). He reports on how climate change is already presenting problems and what various parts of the military are doing to deal with it. This is one of those driveway experiences; that is, you park the car but stay in it to finish the episode. That’s a slight exaggeration because it’s always available here. Thanks Kai and crew for this!

    Enlightening unbiased and helpful
The entire season explores new areas in interesting ways. The interviews with people involved, both in and out of the military make the content real in an emotional way. I am grateful to know that so many smart and dedicated people in our military are tackling climate change issues in interesting ways. Thank you Kai and staff for your work and dedication to shedding light on topics that are important to everyone. I recommend this to anyone (even climate change skeptics).

Informative company on my daily commute
Listening to all 6 seasons was eye opening and informative. All seasons are filled with information we all need to be aware of in a changing climate. 5 stars all around, but ultimately its Kai Ryssdal's incredible journalistic voice, whether it be Market place or season 6, that keep me hooked to any podcast he's involved in. Bravo "How we Survive!" Can you please make a season 7!

    Poor Chris
Just listened to Season 2, Ep.5 where Chris, with home insurance costs going up, is thinking of moving to the Blue Ridge mountains…. I hope he didn’t go before Helene washed that land away.

    Makes you wonder
Kai and the team always put together in-depth, interesting, and thought provoking podcasts but this series hits a new high. Nice work and keep bringing the interesting stuff to the masses!

    Superb in person perspective
Kai’s reporting on the US. Military preparations for climate change was insightful and sobering . A superb piece of documentary reporting!

    The military aspect
Congrats to Marketplace for adding the topic of the military machine that few climate change analyses have addressed. The precise impact on a worldwide basis will unfortunately always be shrouded in secrecy. Interesting interviews and on base experiences. Kai is an excellent presenter, as well as Amy Scott, and I look forward to the next series. Keep up the good work!

    Listen to every season!
Each of the seasons have had their own focus & I’ve learned so much from each of them. Molly’s start on lithium mining was great. Amy’s season on hurricanes was great, but hard for me since we lost our house in Harvey and have had to deal with sea level rise/high tide street flooding and insurance issues. PTSD, particularly the first & second episodes. Kai’s season has been very interesting & really gets to the reality of the US’s real role in climate change. I’ve relistened to them several times. Kudos to the whole team!

Compelling and Not as Bleak as Expected
The reporting in this season is incredible; it’s compelling and honest. I’m learning vital information and, while the climate situation is dire, this podcast shows a way forward while bringing the challenges and inequities of reality into the light.

    impossibly important
the future is here, and it's not pretty. season 6 with kai rysdall got me hooked, so i went back to season 1 and binged from there. these stories are nightmare fuel, the flawless reporting high-risk, the conclusions almost certainly divisive. an amazing undertaking.

    Marketplace - The Best Podcasts
Kai Ryssdal and Marketplace are the best. After listening to various Marketplace segments for years I must have earned a college degree in everything. The economy is an open book to me. Even more important, over the years Kai has explained everything in life and how it is all interconnected around the world. Thank you! Keep it coming, please. Ann Wellhouse You do know that how Kai says, “This is Marketplace” each time is analyzed by us everyday listeners?

    New season is great
I’ve loved all the seasons and hosts, but I have to say that Kai brings a special flair and his hosting takes things to another level. Love traveling with the producing team to the Arctic. Tightly edited, smartly written… storytelling! Can’t wait for the rest of the season. Kudos to the whole team that puts this together, and all hosts present and past!

More of this, please. Maybe give it its own show?
As someone who has worked in renewable I love this series. It digs deep into the climate crisis, and even the title demonstrates the existential nature of the threat. This series should keep going, expand, and maybe become it’s own show. I mean I love learning about government cheese caverns and how the dollar became default, but this is knowledge that is solid, direct, and will become more important as we go. More, please! More content, more often. Morr.

    Welcome to the revolution, Comrade!
Wow…just got done with the episode where Amy Scott interviews the people behind the film “How to Blow Up a Pipeline”. Amy did not ask any hard questions or challenge these people in a real way. I really felt like she was just saying “amen, brother!” The whole time. Nothing on this pod now but doom, gloom and fight the man. The final straw was hearing the justification for violent action from the movie makers with no challenge from Amy. I miss Molly Wood! If you want a better podcast focused on solutions, go find Molly on her podcast. So much better!

    Great Storytelling!
I learn so much from this podcast. Every episode covers a topic that is not only very applicable right now and the immediate future, it’s explored with balanced journalism, curiosity and humor. How DO we survive? It’s easy to focus on what isn’t working, but this show gives me hope.

    S4 Ep5 Incinerator toilet?
I’m just wondering why the couple in Season 4 Episode 5 don’t install a solar panel and an incinerator toilet so at least they don’t have to flush with water. Great show!

    Reality bites
This season, like the others, are so important to really listen to and digest. Amy Scott is so competent in her reporting and narration, she’s a trusted voice in my humble opinion. Keep up the great work.

Grateful for reporting on subjects so relevant to what we need to correct our behavior and thinking about this very precious planet on which we live.

    How we can still thrive
Might better be titled how we could again thrive. Survival is a low bar. The hopeful but pragmatic tone here is helpful and healthy.

Season 3 is not as interesting as 1 and 2
I have listened to 2 episodes of Season 3. This season has a very different vibe than the previous 2 seasons. The entire episodes are interviews; one long interview per episode. Season 1 and 2 have themes and points of interest that are supported by occasional interviews of different people from different professions. I think the drop in quality is due to the budget cuts. It’s a shame such good podcast has now been reduced to a shadow of its former glory.

    Soooo well done! Informative
This was one of my favorite podcasts to date & I listen to a lot of podcasts! I am an environmental warrior and have been donating, signing petitions, etc for years, since the 80’s and we are not doing better. It’s scaring me. Season 2 was my favorite. This podcast is so well researched, so many riveting interviews and details. Seems no corner not turned, no stones unturned. Looks at the issues from all points. But it’s not all doomsday, there is hope, you hear about folks who are trying to help and come up with innovative, fresh solutions. Gives me hope. Can’t wait for season 3. How about the erosion of all the seaboards? Even Portugal is having whole slabs of beach eroding away. No matter what KEEP GOING!!! Bravo!

Such an informative podcast. Please do Season 3!

    The Truth
I enjoyed season 2 very much. As a native Floridian I’ve heard way too much denial and doom and gloom. This podcast manages to tell the truth without being confrontational or pie in the sky, just the facts. Make up your own mind.

Conventional, Tired Thinking on Climate Change
If you’re looking for new insights on climate change, this is not the podcast for you. Same old views on climate change that Greenland is melting, Miami is going under water, we’re all going to die in 30 years (or is it 40 now??), etc that climate “experts” have been spouting for 20+ years now. Best episode is the unironic one where an English professor and fiction author talks about a book he wrote about a bad hurricane. I appreciate that a lot of climate change experts are full of fiction, but trotting out this episode is a gem. Human ingenuity and adaptability continue to be discounted / ignored by the conventional alarmists when dealing with the climate “crisis”. This podcast is squarely in that vein.
  • AmyBOaktown
Molly Wood and Amy Scott are two of the best
Don’t miss this podcast, which goes deep into climate change, what humans are doing about it, and the financial implications on our day to day lives. Scott and Wood take topics that sound mundane and they turn them into gripping episodes. I really can’t recommend the series highly enough.
  • tinakuhl
    A must listen!
Amy (and the whole team) have done a fantastic job telling the story of how our climate is crumbling. The pod is engaging and informative. Molly Wood, we miss you! Thank you for your good works in the VC space.

Excellent, thoughtful, practical. Well worth the time
I especially liked the great number of perspectives considered, however difficult they may be.

Excellent story telling on a tricky subject
This is a fantastic podcast series. Amy Scott is not only a great host, but probably one of the best writers and storytellers on the planet!
